What caliber do you use and why?

My deer rifle is a Christensen Arms in .270 Weatherby Mag. It shoots a 130 grain Sierra game king bullet 3,550 feet per second out of the barrel and shoots groups at a hundred yards that you can cover with a quarter. I've never shot anything with it that didn't just drop where it stood. I shot it this past Saturday in preperation for my up coming Kiabab hunt and I was hitting 12" party ballons at 700 yards. Ballisticly it's a little faster than the .270 WSM, but on the down side it is a little more expensive to shoot/reload as well. On another note, make sure to research and invest in the highest quality scope for your new rifle as you can afford. Any of the calibers spoken of in this thread are more than capeable of putting down a coues from a long ways away, but you can't hit them if you can't see them! Make sure you buy a scope with enough power to see your target at long ranges and in low light conditions. Look into the different styles of long range shooting as well and choose what works best for you. Some guys really like the mil dot reticle's, and others like myself like the target turrets or ballistic drop compensator knobs. Don't go buy a new fancy rifle and then cheap out on the scope! Good luck!

    Utah Carp

Here's a couple pic's of two of the bucks we shot last weekend in Utah. The two point is mine and the three point is my Uncle's. The best part of this trip was that my oldest son Kade got to go with me for his first time in deer camp. He hunted hard with me and endured a Saturday afternoon snow storm and some real cold temperatures. He was right by my side when I shot my buck and got to help with the cleaning and all the chores to take care of the meat. We saw a lot of deer, mostly does and even passed up a very small spike at 30 yards. Kade told me to pass on it since it was still opening morning and he wanted it to grow up to be a big buck that he can come back and shoot in a few years when he's old enough. Kade is already talking about next year!!!!!

    Spring checks cashed yet?

I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I've been told many times that our application money is kept in an NON interest baring account. I heard that it was state law or something like that. Anyone know if this is true?

    Bullet question

Very nice. I've heard good things about the Barnes TSX, but I've not tried them yet. I've got a few loaded and ready to go, but haven't been able to find the time to get to the range. I never had much luck getting good groups with the old Barnes bullets I tried, so I'm crossing my fingers that my rifle will like these a little better. I've got a very accurate load using Sierra Game Kings, but I'd like to find something just as accurate with a heavier constructed bullet.

    Cool Pic!!

What if the date is correct??? There are several states with elk hunts going on at that time???

    Bullet question

Dodger2, you are right the Hornady Interbond is a bonded bullet very similar to a Nosler Accubond. Simply put that means that the lead core and the copper jacket are not going to seperate upon impact. Then the bullet will retain it's weight which means it will retain it's kenetic energy and travel deeper into the animal and do more damage. Rest assured that you are shooting a premium bullet that will more than handle the task of a cow elk. Shot placement is and always will be important, but even if you put that bullet through its shoulder you should have a very dead elk. Good luck!
