There wasn't a cloud in the sky yesterday. The area it started is right out of town with quite a bit of human activity.

Last I heard it was 6,000 acres!

Digiscope adapter - anyone use this one?
TAM replied to scoutm's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Since my smartphone is now my primary camera I bought the Outdoorsman's version and love it! Kind of pricey but high quality and works better than any other method I've seen in the past. If I get cell service I can even send pictures to friends before I come off the mountain. Best of luck! -
Field Judging Desert Bighorn Sheep-Ernie Meeske Unit 22 186 1/8 Net Ram
TAM replied to Jay Scott's topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
Great stuff Jay! Perhaps you could put something together that details the classification of rams for us sheep novices? You always hear about a "class IV" ram but I think a lot of us don't really know what it truly means. I believe a class IV is typically 3/4+ curl and carries it's mass through the horn and often has broomed off tips? Sorry to put you on the spot but perhaps you could post up some pic's of the different classes and the distinguishing characteristics? Thanks! Fingers crossed for a sheep tag -
HA! Ha! That's exactly what I was thinking... Perhaps they're twins?

I Phone Digi Scope Adapter
TAM replied to Jay Scott's topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
Nope... Doubt I'll get a strip deer tag or a bighorn sheep tag either so I'll probably be going back to Colorado to do another September muzzleloader deer hunt in the high country and of course back to Mexico in January. -
I Phone Digi Scope Adapter
TAM replied to Jay Scott's topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
The Outdoorsman's version is awesome!!! I think it's like $59 for the base and $29 for each eyepiece adapter. It's a little more expensive than other versions like the Phone Skope but it is machined from the same aircraft aluminum as their Outdoorsman's tripods so you know it's high quality stuff. And I think we all know that the Outdoorsman's stands behind their stuff so the warranty will never be an issue!!! It's pretty universal as well so if you ever get a new phone you can change it over fairly easily. I do like the Phone Skope app that you can buy for your smart phone. It allows you to call and video conference with a friend and your friend will see exactly what you are seeing through your spotting scope in real time. Has some other cool stuff as well like an anti shake mode, time & date stamp, stores GPS cords in the file name, and only costs like $3.99 I think. Good luck! -

Trying to clean out some shelf space and decided to sell my hunting DVD collection. I have 46 hunting DVD's for sale, ALL OR NOTHING! Please don't ask to separate. Sorry for the glare on the pic, but you get the idea. Titles listed below. Just to be honest I've not watched most of these in years and don't have the time to go through every title to make sure they all work so it's possible that there are a couple bad or scratched disk's. At an average of $10 per DVD there is well over $460 worth of pure hunting entertainment. $75 + actual shipping and paypal costs. Will also accept checks or money orders but I won't ship until I get the money. If you are in the Prescott area we can meet face to face. This is the only place I have this listed so the first "I'll take it" gets it. My two sons Kade (12) and Connor (10) pulled cow elk tags for unit 9. This would be Connor's first big game tag so his older brother Kade, who has already killed three animals of his own, was gracious enough to let Connor have priority on this trip. The plan was for Kade, Connor, their younger brother Corbin (9) and myself go up and hunt by ourselves. But when I pulled into the driveway with a brand new "rented" 26 foot toy hauler with heater, sink, microwave, shower, toilet, and warm beds my wife, daughter, and Bulldog Gus decided to come as well. The first morning we went out to a vantage point where we could glass the PJ's. After a few minutes of glassing with my tripod mounted 15's my son Kade says he sees a herd of elk with his hand held 8's. Sure enough there was a raghorn bull and 5 cows about 1200 yards away feeding. We bailed off the mountain but once we hit the PJ flat everything changed and we never saw them again. Later that night we went to an area where Doug (Red Rabbit) had seen some elk activity on his bull hunt (Thanks Doug!). I knew this area from my scouting trips and I also knew the perfect spot for an evening glass. After an hour or so of glassing we heard some distant gun shots and even though they were a long ways off I decided I'd better look in that direction just in case. Seconds after I adjusted my bino's I saw two cows feeding down a ridge to the flats. Un-spooked and obviously not the same elk as the ones being shot at we quickly bailed off our vantage point and ran a mile to get within range of the elk. As we got to the base of the ridge the elk had moved down we had good wind but I think we made a little to much noise and they were aware of our presence and beginning to file out. We quickly tried to get set up but the tall grass was making it difficult for Connor to get set up. After several attempts in various positions we had to move about 30 yards which put us in perfect position as the last cow was moving right at us. She was very much aware of something but didn't know what or where the danger was. Finally she stopped facing directly at us only 50 yards away. The only problem was that from Connor's prone position the brush covered everything right up to her jaw leaving nothing but her head exposed. I asked Connor several times if he could see her through the scope and he finally said "yes... but only her head and ears!" So I told him to hit her right in the head, to which he responded "ok, I'll try." A second later there was a BOOM and no more cow standing in the open. I raised to my feet and could see for a hundred yards in front of us and there was no cow running off which could only mean one thing. Connor stood up and we high fived as the two brothers came to congratulate! As we all moved forward we found Connor's first ever cow elk and big game animal, something I hope he never forgets! We hunted hard for the next couple of days with out seeing much and unfortunately Kade never got an opportunity to pull the trigger. As happy as I am for Connor getting his first animal I'm sure proud of Kade for offering Connor the opportunity to go first. That's just what good big brothers do! Three brothers after our first morning of glassing. From left to right: Corbin, Kade, Connor Connor Even little sister Kamryn and her Bulldog Gus joined in on the action! Gus wasn't really impressed with the hunting and camping thing. He just pretty much likes to sleep.

New KUIU Pieces-Super Down Jacket and Merino 230 Zip-T
TAM replied to Jay Scott's topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
Jay, I will anxiously be waiting your honest review of the Super Down Jacket. I have a Patagonia down jacket that I've been using on my early Colorado backpacking hunts and my late season Arizona hunts. I like the jacket and love the warmth but like most down jackets go it has its limitations. I've always used it as a layer over a merino or synthetic base and wear it under a shell jacket with water resistant properties. Even with this system I have my concerns in September on a 12K foot mountain in the Colorado backcountry when rain storms sometimes occur every day. I think this new Quix Down would give me a lot of peace of mind! That video on the Kuiu site where they put the down in the jars with water says it all. Keep us posted! -

Thanks for the report Jay! I killed a buck with two front hooves like that about 10 years ago in unit 31. Any idea what causes it?
