    Regular vs. Short?

I pretty much agree with what every one said. I own a .270 Weatherby mag and get average velocities 3,550 feet per second with a 130 grain Sierra Game King bullet. It took quit a bit of trial and error to find a load that it would shoot well, but I've got it dialed in with 3/4 inch groups. For me the compairson between a .270 wsm and a .270 Weatherby mag is like a Corvette and a Ferrari. They're both super fast, the Ferrari is usually a little faster, but it also comes at a cost. In most practical senses the added cost of the .270 weatherby is not going to pay for it's edge in velocity. I would not recomend this caliber unless you plan to spend a lot of time working up new loads. For me it was a frusterating experience, but now that I've got it shooting well I love the raw killing power that the caliber/load/bullet provides. I'm having a new custom .300 RUM built for this Falls hunts, so my .270 Wby will probably take a back seat for awhile.

    Bipod

I also use the Harris. I killed a bedded coues at 404 yards with it from the sitting position. I wouldn't recomend it for shots longer than that.

    Rifle?

Hey Casey, what's a whitetail turkey? They must be extinct or something now from over hunting and global warming or something like that? I'd sure love to add one of them to my big game collection. I'd probably put it up on the wall right next to my jackalope and a real nice snipe I caught when I was a kid on a camping trip with the boy scouts. Right now my favorite rifle is a Christensen Arms .270 weatherby mag. I've killed three coues deer, 1 mule deer, 2 antelope, and 2 javelina with it. It will probably become my back up rifle as soon as my .300 RUM custom is finished later this summer.
  4. Thanks Amanda, that was pretty neat!
  5. Nice job. That coues buck dated 9/1/05 is a real butterball. Thanks.

    Utah

Sounds like they sent me and Desertbull the exact same notice. I'll just keep my fingers crossed for Arizona, New Mexico, and the remaining draws in Nevada.

    Vortex Vulture binos?

I own and use two pairs of bino's. I use my Swarovski 15x56 with a tripod for glassing, and I use Minox 8x32 for around my neck while I'm hiking, stalking, or for looking at close stuff. For me the binos around my neck really take a beating. I really don't go anywhere without them and they get banged around pretty hard, while my expensive Swarovski's are protected in my pack. It's for this reason that I don't want a thousand dollar set of glass hanging from my neck getting beat up. I choose to buy less expensive mid priced binos with good glass to use for close stuff. I may have to replace them every 6-8 years from all the abuse, but I'd rather replace a set of $400 binos than a set of $1,000 binos. JMO I'll be buying a new pair this summer to replace my Minox. They've lasted me roughly 10 years and they're just getting to scratched and worn out. I'll be looking at Minox, Vortex, Pentax, Nikon, and perhaps a few other brands to replace them. Although I think I'll probably step up to some 10 power instead.

Thanks guys. If you see him tell him he's got a PM from me and to give me a call if he's still wanting to sell the truck.
  12. Just curious if anyone here knows exactly where the locked gate was? I've hunted that area in the past and hope to get back there again someday. It would be good info to know. Thanks.

    looking for an engineer

I'm not sure about all the requirements in the Tucson area, but in Yavapai County you don't need to hire a full blown architect. You can save a lot of money by hiring a draftsman to draw up the plans for you. Then when you submit your plans to the truss companys for bids (Sunstate Truss, Foxworth, Shuck & Sons etc) they will do the enginering calculations for you and stamp the plans. Then when you put them through the city or county for approval you will have everything you need for approval. I would be real surprised if you don't need a soils test. Arizona is loaded with expansive soils which makes foundations real tricky. You may want to double check on that. Draftsman in the Prescott area charge in the $1.10 - $1.50 per square food range. An architect would be double if not more.
  15. Well I got skunked on the Arizona antelope and elk draws, but I just found out I drew out on a Nevada rifle deer tag!!! Now I don't have to stress about not getting a tag. I just hope my new rifle is done in time!

    Favorite Trophy's

Holy Cow Casey I didn't realize your cat still had spots! I know you've been getting ribbed for shooting a small one but I didn't realize it was a kitten......... literally! How old did the G&F estimate it's age and how much did it weigh? Do you have any field pic's with you and the cat both in the pic?

    Whats your opinion?

I think it's about time for the areas north of the ditch to be draw only.

    Camo Pattern for Hunting Sheds?

I'm guilty of wearing camo while shed hunting, hiking, scouting, riding the ATV, shooting, camping, and almost any other outdoor activity. My camo's are just my outdoor clothes and I don't want to get my carharts tore up in the cat claw and oak brush I guess. Although most of the time I just wear camo pants with a long sleeve white t-shirt.

    Nevada mule deer!

Drew units 111-113 with Thomas Brunson of Timberline Outfitters. It's near Ely, and it's the first time I've ever applied for Nevada. I can't wait!!!
  23. I'm having a .300 RUM built right now with an Advanced Barrel Systems carbon wrapped Shilen barrel.

    Results are out

No luck here on either elk or antelope. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed for Arizona deer & bighorn, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico. Congrats and good luck to those that drew tags.

    Out of state Bowhunts.

It's too late to apply for archery hunts in Utah, but they always have left over non resident archery deer tags for sale on a first come basis. You may want to do a little research there. If you're interested PM me and I'll tell you exactly where to go and see lots of deer. It's always a fun hunt especially if you're ok with seeing lots of 16-18 inch three points. I think the archery hunt up there starts a week or so before Arizona's and runs for a few weeks. Good luck!
