Salt pellets that you buy at the grocery store. They come in a yellow bag for about $8 bucks or so. Dig or clear a small depression in the ground to pour the pellets into. Then get a bag of Deer Co-Cain and poor over the top of the pellets. If possible I always tried to pour a gallon or so of water over the salt to get it to start melting a little. Then set up you're camera and keep your fingers crossed that some deer will start hitting it.

I think Utah really saw us coming on that deal. They send us a bunch of dink Parker Mountain goats and a few tukeys and we send them Bighorn Sheep? Won't do much for the awesome genetics we've got here in Arizona, but it will help the G&F out in there quest for more opportunity ..... as far as the antelope are concerned anyway. As for the Bighorn I can't imagine why we'd be willing to part ways with ANY of them being that there are so few of them here to begin with and the trade will just decrease the "opportunity" here in AZ??? Here's an Idea... take any surplus bighorn and transplant them within AZ to areas with struggling populations or no population at all. What I want to know is just where on the Prescott National Forest did they release them? Perhaps unit 8 around Drake?

Is a guided hunt as satisfying as do-it yourself?
TAM replied to lousyhunter's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
What is that supposed to mean? I've been on a few guided hunts myself and believe me I hunted hard! Perhaps there was some scouting done for me, but by no means was "all the hunting" done for me. What about states like Alaska and Wyoming that require guides for certain areas or animals. Does it make me less of a hunter because the law requires non residends to use a guide? In Nevada and New Mexico you have better odds of drawing if you are using an Outfitter. Does it make me less of a hunter if I applied through the outfitters draw to increase my odds of getting a tag? There is also no gaurantee with using a guide. Like Gino said it's a "opportunity" business. I've hunted coues deer guided and non guided. It just happens that I've killed my biggest coues with a guide. I've also hunted mule deer both guided and non guided but I've killed my biggest mule deer all by myself. Sometimes you don't kill anything at all and just enjoy the hunt. -
I'm guessing that most everyone has seen this map/chart before. It's been on this site for years. My question is how accurate do you think it is for the area you hunt? I've often found myself looking at this map before I scout new areas or after I've had a chance encounter with a coues in an area I didn't think held any. The map is also dated 1990 and nearly 19 years old, so I'm sure things have changed some. So what do you all think? In my opinion the core areas for the areas I frequent are pretty accurate. It's the areas on the fringe that seem more questionable. It seems to me that the areas listed with lower populations in many cases seem higher than indicated on the map.

What a stud... Congratulations!

SBD, sounds like you've been drinking the Kool-Aid again. Time to put down the bottle! Scout'em, you're a lot more politically correct than I would have been and you also know a lot more big words than I do, but you are 100% spot on accurate! I especially liked the the very last word - Accountability! America needs more accountability.

I didn't notice until just now that Ron's signature says "small game, predators, and furbearer Biologist". Doesn't sound like deer and elk are even in his realm of responsibilities. Probably just wanted to sound like a big shot by coming on here and spouting off a bunch of meaningless numbers. With a title like that I highly doubt he has the credentials to respond. Besides his boss probably found out about it and told him to shut his pipe or the commission won't be able to sneak this one in the back door. I'm thinking this one's a done deal. Just like the opportunity versus quality thing. The commission has there mind made up and isn't concerned what the hunters think. They refuse to use good data, they refuse to use equal data, and they refuse to listen to what hunters really want.

california lead ban expanded
TAM replied to billrquimby's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I wonder how the "lead ban" and "cop killer bullet ban" are going to work together? I realize that cop killer bullets haven't been banned yet and lead bullets are still allowed in most states, but if we can't use lead bullets we have to use copper bullets which also happen to be considered "cop killer bullets". What are hunters and sportsman going to do then? I also read an article recently, perhaps from this site, where biologists are trying to get lead bullets banned in grizzley conutry as well. Heaven forbid a grizz eat a contaminated gut pile and get lead poisoning and die! The shaft is comming folks!!!! -
I said it before and I'll say it one last time....... You're gonna get yourself hooked on Mexico. If you go once you're gonna have to go again and before you know it, it'll be an annual addiction that you spend way to much money on. I'm speaking from experience. Best of luck!!!!

Just like I don't know of anyone that voted for Governor Nappy, yet somehow she still got elected. Either there are a bunch of closet Dem's in this state or they only come out from under there rocks during the elections.

Shane Smith by chance???

Great buck! Congratulations.

Congrats on a great buck!

No exit. Mush! Blood puree! Sounds to me like perfect bullet performance I'm guessing that there was nothing but small bullet fragments recovered?

A troll is a person that goes to a chat forum with the intent of stirring the pot and creating contention. The bullets from most hunting rifles will pierce through a 1/4" steel plate at 100 yards. I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure that regular hunting bullets fired from a hunting rifle will penetrate most police bullet proof vests. Just do a google search on Obama and guns, or Biden and guns to see there history. The threat of bullets being banned is very real. Many people believe that bullets/ammunition will be banned before guns. Try doing a google search on banning bullets as well and you'll be very surprised at what you find. Many politicians believe the 2nd ammendment only supports a persons right to bear arms...... but not bullets. The other threat is EXTREME taxation on bullets. BO openly supports a 500% tax increase on bullets. Another piece of the Obama/Biden gun ban agenda is to develop the technologh to some how stamp or encrypt a code on all bullets and or bullet cases. That way when a person buys ammo the code is registered in that persons name and when that bullet or case ends up at a crime scene they trace the bullets back to the purchaser. Part of this deal is that after a certain date all bullets and brass that are not stamped must be destroyed. http://www.gunbanobama.com/Default.aspx?Na...e6-892463d99f08 http://www.ontheissues.org/domestic/Barack...Gun_Control.htm

So I guess there was no exit? What did the inside of his chest look like?

Nice work Jade!

Welcome to the VLD club! Congrats on a nice buck. So did you miss his skull plate or what?

Let me guess, but it is ok for you to use high power glasses and a scoped rifle to nock off a deer at 300 yards with know clue you are sitting across the canyon from? just a question. What's the difference between using salt to attract a deer and using a bugle/cow call to attract an elk? Or perhaps a dieing rabitt call to attract a coyote or bear? What about creating mock scrapes to attract a buck? What about using a buck antelope decoy to attract an antelope? What about sitting water to attract game? How about using dogs to run a cat up a tree? Am I still less of a hunter if I use these other methods to attract my query?

Amen and Halleluiah! It's all about common sense.

I have an idea..... Lets ban road hunting? I'm sure there are more deer killed each year using this method than salt, and it would be much easier to enforce. G&F could even go out on STING operations with a fake life sized buck and place it off the side of the road and let the road hunters drive by and jump out of there pickup and blast away at the fake buck! Then the G&F officers could jump out of the bushes and issue citations to the dirty scumbag road hunters! I'll bet if we did that then there would be no more road hunting in Arizona!........ Oh wait, I forgot, it's already illegal to road hunt in AZ. We can't even enforce the simple rules we've got and we want to make more rules that are even more difficult to enforce than the first rules. What are people thinking???

Mr. Day Thank you for your response to our concerns. However your data seems to only indicate that success in unit 22 is on the rise. Where does it show or indicate that the increased success is linked to salt or bait? Seems to me that there could be any number of reasons for increased success rates in a given unit including increased numbers of game, decreased predator populations, favorable weather patterns, etc. Has G&F taken the time to research this data to determine if other factors may be responsible or perhaps even partly responsible for these results? Just like manditory hunter check in on the Kaibab, I think it is prudent that G&F completes the research on there data before they start writing new laws which effect the way we hunt. With regards to CWD, you mentioned it has not been discovered in Arizona at this point in time. If CWD was a threat in Arizona wouldn't G&F be just as concerned if not more so with the thousands upon thousands of ranchers that put out feed troughs and water licks across the state? Has G&F conducted any research to estimate just how many hunter salt or bait sites exist versus cattle feed troughs and salt licks? If G&F was really that concerned with the transmission of CWD wouldn't they be lobbying against the use of feeders and salt in the cattle industry across Arizona? With all due respect Mr. Day your concerns sound good, but I've yet to see any real facts, proof, or studies to back them up. I can't speak for all hunters but to me it seems like the AZG&F is on a witch hunt and they're planning on burning salt at the stake! Regards, Tim Maddock

Just like hunting I think the ideal personal defense round is the one you shoot the best and feel the most comfortable with. Especially when it comes to women. I just took my wife out this past weekend to shoot her new Glock 27 in .40 cal and found out it's too much gun for her to handle. She shot my G19 in 9mm much better! There is no point in packing heat if you can't make the shot. I'm really bummed out by this because now I'm going to have to buy her a new Glock 26 in 9mm and keep the G27 for myself. Don't worry... I'm sure I'll get over it.

That pic was taken the day after I shot it mr smarty pants!

I have a feeling that CBASS is a troll but I'll go ahead and respond anyway. Reinacting the assult weapons ban, making it permanent. Child proof locks on all guns. No gun shops or manufacturers within 5 miles of a school. Making the manufacturer of assult weapons illegal in the US. 500% federal tax on ammo and components. Making the sale of brass, bullets, primers, and powder illegal. Doing away with concealed carry permits. Making it illegal to carry a gun in your vehicle or person. Allowing gun manufacturers to be sued for guns used in crimes.
