Maybe. But generally, one is not admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for no symptoms.

Tactical Naps - It's about time

Ever get up early, hike for an hour in the dark to get to your glassing spot, and after glassing for hours feel the urge to lie down, stretch out, pull your cap over your eyes and have a quick sleep? Ever been shed hunting and after hiking for half a day feel the urge to curl up on a bed of comfy pine needles for a siesta? Well, don't feel guilty anymore or let anyone call you lazy, unfocused, or unmotivated. You're taking a tactical nap. My book of tactical advice is not exactly a best seller but I've been taking back country naps for years and, at the risk of seeming immodest, I'm really good at it. The Army is finally on board with the latest update to their health and fitness manual. Sleep is restorative, rejuvenating, and healing. I'm happy the military is realizing that. And I'm glad I have a new name for it; the tactical nap. Here's some info: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/01/us/army-naps.html This link contains some of the research and practical advice. https://www.pdhealth.mil/news/blog/tactical-naps-when-napping-can-be-good-you

    Night job

I’m a rabid free-marketeer but these repeated ammo shortages (to the point of unavailability) are making me wonder. In a properly functioning free market, I’d expect at least one of two things to happen. I’d expect that demand exceeding production would cause in increase in production until supply met the demand. Or, I’d expect the retail price of ammo to increase which would put downward pressure on demand until it met the supply. (Or a combo of both.) I know people are buying ammo to make themselves feel good (insert whatever reason you want but the bottom line is that possessing ammo makes them feel better). But I also know that having money in their pocket makes people feel good too. Economically rational people (a fiction, I know, because emotions are involved) would buy ammo until the marginal cost (measured in dollars) exceeds the marginal benefit (measured in the good feeling of knowing you have ammo). At that point, economically rational people would stop buying ammo. The sweet spot where the marginal cost and marginal benefit intersect is market equilibrium where supply meets demand and there’d be ammo available for those who are willing to pay the price instead of empty shelves. It’s not like the toilet paper issue. The ammo thing has happened numerous times over many years. So it’s not like it’s unforeseeable. Here’s to hoping Hornady adds a shift at the ammo factory.

    Happy Labor Day

Never apologize for a good rant. We like those here. But maybe the one word implied that is not being said is "too." As in "Black Lives Matter Too." Logically, if a person believes that all lives matter then they agree that Black lives matter. Back to the labor movement though. It seems like unions have lost the public perception war because most on this thread perceive union workers to be lazy, selfish, overpaid, liberals. I think that's a failure on the part of the labor movement in general at least in terms of branding. One notable exception would be public safety (police & fire) unions. They seem to be winning the battle for positive public perception because I've not seen one negative thing mentioned about them on here.

    Happy Labor Day

Teamsters Local 104 for UPS for 7 and half years and UFCW Local 99 (and a couple other locals when I worked grocery before UPS). It's been 30 years since I started at UPS as a part-timer with a baby on the way. Back then part-timers got health insurance after 30 days on the job. That part-time job allowed me to support my family while going to school and then I became a full-time driver upon graduation. Eventually I moved on but that job helped me live the American dream. I'm very grateful for it. (I can even start drawing a modest Teamster pension when I turn 55.) I've had anti-union people complain point out abuses of power in unions and I've conceded there are examples of that. But when I point out the abuses of power in corporate board rooms or company management, that person usually concedes there are examples of that. I argue that there are more of the latter than the former. The decline in union membership and therefore union strength closely matches the shrinking of the middle class. There's always someone who will work for 50 cents an hour less than someone else for various reasons. That puts huge downward pressure on wages. But it's great for the stock market so if that's your priority, maybe you're happy about it. As workers, united we bargain, separately we beg. All tolled, I believe unions have been a positive force in our country. They certainly have been for me. And I'm grateful. Happy Labor Day!

    Jakes last hunt

A sad day for sure but you have the memory of all the adventures and his indomitable spirit. Daphne the wonder dog (my avatar), went on her last trip a year ago. I feel bad leaving her but she struggles at the end of her one mile walks when she used to literally be able to go all day. Like Jake, she still follows me around when she knows I'm heading out and tries not to be left behind. We're all fighting the indefensible assault of time.

    Swarovski BTX Question

Does anyone have any idea if the dual eye piece BTX will ever come out in a straight configuration? I saved up and got the STX spotting scope and I love it but am now thinking about saving for the BTX but didn't want to get the BTX angled only to have a BTX straight come out the next month. Swaro is VERY good at keeping things under raps and enforcing their MAP (minimum advertised price) requirements but I thought I'd ask here. Maybe a BTX straight is in the works but maybe there is some optical engineering reason why the BTX is only angled. I don't know. If you have any thoughts or ideas, I'd love to hear them.

    Optic for AR Platform

I forgot the Burris RT-6 1x6 scope. SportOptics (CWT.com sponsor) has them for $300. https://www.sportoptics.com/burris-rt-6-rifle-scopes.aspx Or you could go with the RT-6 Combo with is that scope with a Fastfire-3 red dot on top for $470. (Link above also has the combo.) Kinda has a Yertle the Turtle look with a red dot stacked on top but you could always take the red dot off and put it on something else that will soon be on the bottom of Lake Powell if you didn't like that configuration. I have no experience with the RT-6 but people I know who know scopes say Burris is on the higher end of the "cheap scope" category. You are in for a lot of fun and many difficult decisions (but those are fun too).

    Optic for AR Platform

I'm old so when I think AR-10 I think .308 but I heard they're making them in other calibers too. So to me now, an AR-10 is an AR platform that shoots a caliber bigger than the .223/.556. What caliber does yours shoot? Regardless of exact cartridge (all of them being more powerful than the .223/.556), the AR-10 has a greater effective distance than the AR-15 so I'd consider a low power variable optic (LPVO). You can get them that start as a "true 1X" and an illuminated reticle so at close range you can run with both eyes open and use it like a red dot. BUT, they also have magnification so you can crank it up when you need to reach out and touch something at greater distance. That buys you options. They come in configurations between 1X4 up to 1X10 and a lot of them now are first focal plane (FFP) scopes so the reticle is magnified with the target. Again, I'm old, so I find magnification helpful. The down side of LPVOs is they tend to be heavier and they're not cheap because they're scopes. But when the zombie apocalypse comes and you see those un-dead, brain-eating, walking corpses lumbering towards your compound while your loved ones feverishly top off your magazines and stack them next to you, what will make you feel better, being able to send some love in their direction effectively at 500 + meters or having saved some money way back when? (And remember, they're zombies. You need head shots.) : ) IMHO, an LPVO will help you maximize your AR-10s capabilities. I have experience with the Burris XTR II 1-8X24 (FFP) and I like it. It's $1,000. https://www.sportoptics.com/burris-riflescope-201018.aspx I also have experience with the Steiner P4Xi Tactical 1-4X24 LE and like it too. It's $800. https://www.sportoptics.com/steiner-p4xi-rifle-scopes.aspx For $2,000 there's the Vortex Razor Gen III 1-10x24 (FFP). I've never looked through it though. https://www.sportoptics.com/vortex-razor-gen-iii-scopes.aspx

Cali Gov penalties on hiring tutors

I don't see how this bill applies to tutors at all. I read original link and I think the information in it is misleading. Here's the text of the law: https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200AB5 I think it applies to companies not individuals. And even if it did apply to companies, it looks like there is a specific carve out for tutors. https://www.dwt.com/blogs/employment-labor-and-benefits/2019/09/california-ab5-employment-law It looks like this law is the codification of a court case where some employer tried to hire employees but then claim they were independent contractors so they didn't have to pay benefits like workers' comp. My vehicle would be illegal in CA because of the cold air intake so I don't like the state personally but I like the truth. I don't think the bill means what the DeMaio Report thinks it means. I'll go farther, I think the DeMaio report article was not just intentionally misleading, I think it was a lie because it doesn't look like this bill even remotely applies to parents hiring a tutor. I don't think it applies to babysitters either. Or the neighbor kid cutting a lawn. Don't get me wrong, I like getting righteously indignant just as much as the next guy but when I do, I want to be right.

    Glassing chair for big dudes

I use the Walkstool Comfort 45cm/18in version for glassing and I love it. Be aware of the difference between the Comfort and Basic models and the different sizes though. I'm every bit of 6'0" sans shoes and and I bought the large, 55cm/22in version at first because most of my other stuff is size large. But I found it is too high for me to be comfortable extended glassing periods. (Tends to cut the circulation on my legs after a while.) I've not sold it because it's great for other stuff like serving as a suitcase stand for visitors. I also bring a glassing pad by Phoenix Shooting Bags and switch back and forth depending on how high the vegetation is and how my back is feeling.

    Mask Requirements

I wear one every time I go out if I'm going to be around other people and can't social distance. It's easy. I don't think it's the boot of an authoritarian government on my neck. I think it's common sense. It's an airborne virus that can be passed by coughing or sneezing (maybe even just breathing close to someone). Does a mask stop every virus? Probably not. But if you cough out 1000 viruses and only a couple make it out past the mask, that's still helpful. We all have to assume that we are asymptomatic carriers. For those who think it's the first step to gun confiscation I'd say those people are irrationally attached to slippery slope arguments. For those who say "My body, my choice. Do you agree Libtards?" I'd say they are irrationally attached to false equivalencies. Donning a mask for a couple hours while out in public is nothing like the emotional and physical pain of being the victim of rape or incest (which is also rape) then having to carry the baby to full term and give birth to it. Argue against mandatory masks if you want, just be logical and intellectually honest about it. I wear a mask mostly to show respect for other people. The check out person at Home Depot is working hard but comes face to face up to 100 people a day. I bet me wearing a mask makes that person feel better. Really it's to protect others. Here's an analogy: https://stevenpressfield.com/2020/04/how-the-spartans-would-fight-covid-19/ In the end, if you don't want to wear one, you be you. To each his own. Nobody's going to get cited for it. If I see you in public, I won't say anything to you. Like I'm sure if you see me wearing one in public you won't say anything to me. And I hope you don't get the dang virus and that nobody you love gets it either because we're all in this together.

    Mags

I’m sorry for your loss. You and Mags had a heck of run together. And it’s so cool she brought you one last bird (even if it was one of your mounts). She had a job to do and she did it until the end. You’re also so right about doing what’s best for the animal. Surgery? Chemo? She would just wonder why you’re doing that to her. The dog in my avatar is the best dog I’ve ever had. And I’ve had a lot of good dogs. She’s starting to be unsteady on her legs. I have to focus on enjoying her in the moment, not preemptively missing her. RIP Mags. You earned it.

    New truck considerations

If you don’t need a bed maybe a Toyota 4Runner or the even bigger Toyota Sequoia would work. Everything locks inside, no dust, and a roof rack can help haul extra cargo if necessary. My mom has a Sequoia with over 300K miles on it. The thing won’t quit. I agree with Mulepacker that it’s hard to go wrong with just about any vehicle these days. The design, machining, and tolerances are so much better than they used to be. Some of us remember the Merle Haggard song Are the Good Times Really Over? One of the lines goes “Wish a Ford and a Chevy would still last ten years like they should.” Well that song came out in 1981 which was if not the low point, very near the low point, of American automobile design and manufacturing. (Those of you who remember the Chrysler K cars will understand.) That’s when the Japanese got their foothold. Post-WWII Anti-Japanese sentiment had started to fade, the Japanese cars were cheap and once purchased, proved reliable and long lasting, and, as Merle Haggard observed, American cars were lacking, The media would bemoan the decline in “American workmanship” like it was the workers’ fault that American cars tended to be uninspired and unreliable. That always pissed me off. It wasn’t American workmanship that declined. It was American design and engineering that declined (no doubt assisted by the bean counters who saw more profit in designing a car that needed more frequent replacement). That trope of the decline in American workmanship was proven false when Japanese companies started manufacturing some of their cars here. Those vehicles, assembled by Americans, were just as good as the ones assembled in Japan. My family is originally from Michigan and it used to not be an issue of buying an American car, it was a matter of which American car you bought. If your neighbor worked for Ford, you bought a Ford. If they worked at the GM plant, you bought a GM. I agree with every fiber of my being that it's important to buy American goods whenever possible but in a globalized world, the issue is nuanced. My 18 year old, 1st Gen. Nissan Xterra is still my daily driver and huntin’ rig. I had the transmission rebuilt at 200K miles but it’s still chugging along. (When I bought it, I wanted a 4Runner but couldn’t afford it.) When I bought my Xterra, my dad gave me a hard time about buying “Jap crap” I told him my Xterra was made by Americans in Tennessee. When I asked him where is Chevy Tahoe was made he had to admit is was made in Mexico. So which is the American car? So here’s my preference, in order: Made in America by an American company (Obviously) Made in America by a foreign company (I value American workers over American CEOs) . Made abroad by an American company (I value American CEOs over foreign workers) Made abroad by a foreign company Not only is this a preference, meaning it will break a tie if the choice is close, but I’m willing to pay more, significantly more, to support American workers. For those complaining about the decline of America today, I’ll post a link to the Merle Haggard song. So if you want to go back to a better time, you’ll have to go back more than 40 years because Ol’ Merle was complaining about the same thing back then. Enjoy:
