More On Lead
Jimmer Negamanee replied to Outdoor Writer's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Great information. Some of it was counterintuitive. For example, I thought shotgun slugs would have more lead fragmentation than rifle bullets but their studies showed that they actually had less. I also knew that Copper bullets would have no lead fragmentation but their study showed that “enclosed core” bullets didn’t either. (I presume that those bullets have a lead core). I know rounds with copper bullets are almost twice as much as other rounds but I’m not sure about rounds with enclosed core bullets. They might be a good option. P.S. Red Rabbit, that presentation was much easier to follow than trying to wade through a scientific paper. (Plus the accent brought me back to my Midwestern roots.) Outdoor Writer, I’m reading How to Hunt Coues Deer every night as I prepare for my hunt. It’s an honor to be on a site with someone who literally wrote the book on Coues hunting. -
Snapshot, thanks for taking the time to post this. October will be my first coues hunt (36B) using quality binos but I am still working on the "knowing how to use them" part. I need to print out the part quoted above and stuff it in my shirt pocket so I can take it out and read it every time I think "This canyon doesn't have any deer in it." or "I should probably hike one more ridge over before I start glassing." -Jim

700 billion here, 700 billion there...
Jimmer Negamanee posted a topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I’m not exactly sure what “credit default swaps” are but apparently they’re bad. In fact, Wall Street finds itself in a bit of pickle because of them and now asks us to chip in a cool seven billion dollars to fix the problem. I’m not even sure what the number seven billion looks like but I think it looks like this: 700,000,000,000. If my math is correct (and I wouldn’t bet on it) this equates to approx $2325 for every man, woman and child in the USA. Or, to put it another way, one pair of new Swarovski 15X56 binos + a decent tripod (or a Jim White pan head) for every man woman and child in the good ol’ U.S. of A. Ouch. Part of me thinks that if the bailout prevents another depression, it is definitely worth it. But part of me thinks that Wall Street had very smart, very well educated and VERY well compensated people who knew what they were doing and did the risk/reward analysis and, like many of us have done, just bet on the wrong horse. What do you think? -
CALLING ALL DEMOCRATS
Jimmer Negamanee replied to GodIsGood's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
+ 1. To which I’d add foreign policy. Freedom isn’t something you can give people of any particular a country. It is something the people of that country have to take for themselves. That’s how we did it. You’re a brave man, SBD. -
New Swaros? I haven't heard about those. Maybe I don't want to. All I need is more bino envy.
-
Those are cool! You could probably glass most of the state from your roof with those bad boys. You may not want to pack them but they seem great for the truck. What's the farthest away you've ever glassed up an animal with those? I can imagine you seeing a nice buck then realizing it's so far away it's actually in an adjacent unit.

Great pics! It looks like that buck broke into a farmers market after dark. -
Thank you. This helps a lot. You will not be seeing any home brew Jimmer binos in 30X56 anytime soon.

My mom always told me " ’Tis better to be silent and let them think you a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." Unfortunately, I have a question for which I have received two plausible explanations but both cannot be correct. So at the risk of removing all doubt, here it goes: If you attach a doubler to each eye piece of a pair of Binoculars have you made binoculars with twice the power? One person I spoke to looked at me like I was an idiot and said “Of course! Add a doubler to each eye piece on a pair of 15s and through the magic of multiplication you end up with a pair of 30s.” So far so good. Then another person I discussed this with looked at me like I was an idiot and said. “Of course not. The “collimation” would be way off and you would end up with a nasty headache from looking through those and you might even vomit all over your tripod.” I did a search on here but didn’t find a thread addressing this issue. Has anyone tried this or does anyone have any thoughts of the subject?

One of the best ones I’ve heard of is from my brother in Idaho who claims to have heard of an intoxicated chap who asked the cover band at a saloon to play “Slow Motion Walter.” The lead singer was confused by the request said “I know just about every rock and roll song and I’ve never heard of Slow Motion Walter. Can you sing it for me?” To which the inebriated patron inhales deeply and belts out: “Slooow motion Waaalter, the fire engine guy.” (Of course the song was Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple.) I can’t throw stones though because for more years than I care to admit to I wondered why Glen Campbell, in the song Rhinestone Cowboy, would get “cards and lettuce from people” he didn’t even know. Oops.

Nope. That's an awesome shed! A room full of 'em wouldn't be too many.

Agreed, in part. But is it better to hunt in an area with more roads or fewer roads? -

I'm sorry this happened to you. It makes no sense that they would freeze your account without telling you. It would probably help to make sure you document the incident as best you can. Write down what happened, when and where it happened and its effect on you and your wife. Also, document who at B of A you talk to, when you talked to them and what they said, right down to how long you were on hold. You might also want to calmly and politely (it may not be easy and I suggest you don’t wear your camo to the meeting) talk to the person who you think froze your accounts and see if he admits that he indeed did that. If he admits it (instead of saying it was a “random” computer glitch) document that too. It may help because you can lock them in to that explanation and won’t have to disprove the computer glitch explanation later. Once you have your ducks in a row, you would be ready to ask them to make it right, meaning compensate you for the incredible inconvenience, loss of time and stress. (Maybe settle out of court for a Scoutguard SG 550 trail cam or the monetary equivalent. ) If you don’t get satisfaction at that level you can go up the chain of command, until you end up writing a letter to the CEO. If you go high enough, documenting as you go, I would think they would make it right if for no other reason than to get rid of you. But it could take time. Think of being a pebble in B of A's shoe as your new hobby. Also, if B of A is a Better Business Bureau member, you can file a complaint there. The BBB will want to know that you complained to the business first, gave B of A the chance to make it right and were reasonable about what you expected them to do. These are just suggestions. Good Luck.

I vote we move this to the “political discussion” section where people know to enter at their own risk. Thankfully, we on CWT.com are not a monolith. There are those on this site who, for example, think the idea of “re-wilding” is the worst idea ever and there are those who find the prospect intriguing. But we all hunt and we all love coues country. We all can and should support whichever causes we wish with our money, our time and letters to the editor, etc. but to paraphrase Ben Franklin, when it come to hunting, we must all hang together or we will certainly hang apart. (maybe that’s what bobbyo meant?)

Jimmer Negamanee replied to GameHauler's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Sorry about the vandalism. I'm glad they weren't stolen. Those are some really cool videos. In both, the elk clearly know the cam is there and go up to investigate. I wonder if they see it, hear it or smell it? In any event, they are definitely aware of it. I would have never guessed that. Did you get any pics of the perps? -
Very good question. I have the same concern. I heard a guy from one of the varmint callers associations offer a creative solution. He was addressing a hunter safety class and, when asked a similar question, said that in addition to harvesting the pelts, they take the meat and donate it to a local wildlife rehabilitation organization who feeds it to the critters they are rehabilitating (birds of prey, bobcats, etc., maybe even other coyotes for all I know.) That seemed like a good, practical idea. You’d have fewer spoilage/handling concerns since it is not for human consumption. Also, it would ultimately be put to use as opposed to just rotting. You might want to ask around for more info at one of the varmint callers clubs or check with a few rehab places to see if this is a viable option. Good luck.

A Week in the Chugach Mountains-Alaska-July 2008
Jimmer Negamanee replied to AZP&Y's topic in Non-hunting trip reports
Holy cow! I see why some people go to Alaska and never come back! Great pictures. Thanks. -
You might want to try posting this question on the "Optics and Other Gear" section. There are some dealers and other optic-philes (or optik-philes as the case may be) who may be able to answer your question. Good luck.

I found out when Draw Results will be available!!
Jimmer Negamanee replied to RoughCut's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Agreed. As someone who has developed a nasty case of carpal tunnel from calling so much, it seems that if you call during business hours (8-5) and press 2, you get the message about the “mid-year draw” and that the “fall draw” results are not available. If, however, you call after business hours and press 2 you get sent right to the mid-year draw results where they tell me I was NOT drawn for elk. In previous draws they changed to message to say that the results were being uploaded or something like that immediately before they were available. If anyone hears that message I think it means were close. As Snapshot said, it is the silly season. -

Thank you to RoughCut for starting a thread that offers a disturbing peak into the neurotic minds of us hunters. Thank you to Rembrant for reminding us to breathe. Great timing. I have visions of my boss coming to me next month with a print out of my phone calls saying “Jimmer, who is at 602.942.3000 and why did you need to call them 513 times last month?” P.S. I hope Snapshot is right. Or if not him, Bowhunter4life. If RoughCut is right, I think we all owe him the beverage of his choice. I still hate this time of year. -

Thanks for the post. At this point any information is better than no information. And I don’t think anyone thinks your WM friend is wrong. I think they want him to be wrong. This is the hardest time of the year. The not knowing. The anticipation. The hopes. The dreams. The only time of the year that is worse is when that dang recording says “You were NOT drawn for…deer.” After hearing that, we’d all love to go back to the not knowing/anticipation/hopes/dreams stage. My personal draw result theory (and each of us has one) is that the G&F wants to under promise and over deliver because if they ever do the opposite it will be like the Night of the Living Dead outside of the G&F office as hunters from around the state converge with pitchforks and torches demanding to know if they were drawn. I was hoping that they’d announce earlier than the 7/22 but unfortunately even a 7/22 date fits my theory because the regs promise that tags will be mailed out by 8/22 (although they also promise that archery tags will be mailed out earlier). I hate this time of year. -
Great finds! But what happened to the hunter orange shed hunting shirt? Does this mean your minions must trade in our "grorange" gear for...what color is that?...robin's-egg blue or more of a baby blue?

Life Span of the USA
Jimmer Negamanee replied to uofahughes2's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Your comment about statistics is spot on. I wonder if farm subsidies are considered part of the “government welfare” Professor Olson mentions? If not, I wonder if it would change his statistics? Here’s a link to a Wall Street Journal article on the topic (if it works): http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120657645419967077.html It looks like there’s plenty of blame to go around regardless of whether you’re an R or a D. Thanks for the thought provoking post.
