Do you still have to be proficient in Morse code to get a HAM license? I looked into it as a kid (25+ years ago) and you had to pass a Morse code proficiency test and, if I remember correctly, with the novice license you could only use Morse code on the air. Since I could only really tap or understand "SOS", my conversations were limited (although it would have come in handy on the Titanic.)

+ 1 For the rest your life you heart will be walking around outside of your body. Bumps. Bruises. Boys. Maybe even babies of her own some day. May you live long enough to see it all! CONGRATULATIONS!

GO GET 'EM!!! Can't wait for the pics or at least a good story!

Addiction to Coueswhitetail.com
Jimmer Negamanee replied to Couzer's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
After my first post, almost a year ago, Lance said "Welcome to the site! But don't blame me for your new addiction!" Oh, boy, was he right! And my wife can attest to that. -
Wow! Great write up and pics! Thanks for sharing. Congratulations to both of you. Let me see, she shoots straight, finds sheds and puts up with you? Maybe I'm putting two and two together and coming up with five but it makes me wonder, are there any "major events" in the foreseeable future that you want to let the CWT.com community know about? Congrats again on a great hunt!

Resistance in futile, my friend. Come to the dark side. What's wrong? Are you afraid to? Did your mom say you couldn't? All the other kids are doing it. (That was my lame attempt at peer pressure. ) I got one for my birthday and it is VERY fun and I've only been dinking around with it here in the city. I can't wait til I can put it somewhere cool. Let us know when you succumb. We"ll be waiting...

I think you guys are on to something! Grong and AZantlerhead together on a shed hunt. The perfect storm of shed know-how and antler mojo. The only way it would be more perfect would to bring SillentButDeadly with you guys! (He finds lots too.) Hmmm, me likey this idea. If ya"ll ever do it, I look forward to reading the post!

Prayer sent. PM sent.

Those are great ideas. You've found so many sheds, I keep waiting for you to announce that you've found a way to use them for fuel!

Nine years old and he's shooting like that? Yeah, I'd say he deserves the full body mount. And his expression in those pics is priceless. Well done and congratulations!

Good looking yote, Josh. Luckily, the javelina that chomped on your caller late last year weren't there to tear the decoy asunder!

But as allways, one is better than none, and even the 0 count days are allways days enjoyed in the wild. So shed hunting is allways a win-win sittuation in our eyes.. Well said! It's gettin' close. I'm looking forward to seeing the latest crop of sheds posted on here in the near future. Fresh "brownies" or old, gnawed on, turning to chalk "whities" and everything in between. They're all cool if you ask me.

I received my Covert II trail cam recently from CWT.com (thank you, Amanda.) It is my first trail cam and I have just been goofing around with it around the house and neighborhood. My goal was to get some pics of the urban coyotes that hang out here in Tempe. I’ve seen a pair fairly often near the railroad tracks by my house and have seen them enough to know that they either live in the area or use the tracks regularly as a travel corridor. My first night’s pictures yielded only cottontail rabbit pics (which could also explain the area’s popularity with coyotes.) But, as I was there first thing in the morning to retrieve my cam (don’t want it gettin’ took) what do I see as soon as I get the contraption unhooked? You guessed it. A pair of coyotes. I put this down in the “Humans plan. Nature laughs.“ category of outdoor experiences. Anyway, I was bound and determined to get a coyote pic so I double-time it back to the vehicle and drive to try to get in front of them. The Covert II does not have a shutter button so the only thing I can do is bail out of the truck and hold the cam up where I think the yotes will run by. I knew this was a Hail Mary but it was my only shot. As you might expect, I got pics of barren landscape, some of the sky, some of the roof of the cab of my truck and one with half of my ugly mug in it. But I also got a very interesting pic which I will post here. Yes, canis latrans, the barking dog himself, the Trickster, Wile E. Coyote, if you will. Can you see it? Here you go (if I can post the pic right):

Great pics! I have the same cam and so far have only been able to dink around with it in town. It looks like it has some pretty good range. I'm very happy to see that. Did you get any pics at night?
-
Funny you should mention that. I noticed the same thing and, in fact, I was focusing on that before I saw the yote at the bottom left. I played my hand at CSI by enlarging the pic to try to make it out but ultimately couldn’t see it well enough to definitively call it either way (although I am leaning towards thinking it’s a bush.) I’ll try to get out there again in the morning light. If I do, I’ll let you know what I find. Interestingly, right behind the railroad tracks is a dog park filled with people sipping lattes as their Bischon Frises romp and play. I wonder how many of them know that just outside the chain link fence, nature’s timeless drama is playing out. The ultimate game of hide and seek. Find and evade. Obeying the law of tooth and claw. ( Okay, it’s official. I watch too many nature shows. )

Not a Coues but the next best thing
Jimmer Negamanee replied to Buckhunter's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Beautiful pictures of some great scenery and a very nice buck! Thanks for posting. -
Shed hunting is one of my favorite pastimes. Although generally my enthusiasm eclipses my skill, even a blind squirrel finds a nut on occasion. That’s what happened on April 12, 2008. The boy and I were out and found this matching set of freshly dropped sheds. (sorry, no field pics but the Grong-orange shirt was the shirt that was worn during the outing.) Anyway, my goal was to mount them for display on my wall as they were VERY fresh drops and were in perfect condition. For father’s day I received a mounting kit complete with plaque and velvety skull plate cover. I took it down the street to my neighbor who is a woodworker (and an engineer.) He took one look at the particleboard plaque and said “We can do better than that.” And he promptly handcrafted a plaque of African Purpleheart. Here are a few pics of what we (he, actually, my job was to keep the sawdust out of the beer) did and the final product. In the spirit of “To each, his own” I understand the final mount could be seen as me trying to mislead people into thinking that I actually killed this buck. This is wrong for many reasons. First of all, it’s not that big. I know hunters (not me, of course) who would have passed on a buck this size on the last day of the hunt. Second, anyone who knows me knows that I’m the Pat McManus of hunting (that is, I have one coues spike to my credit and I’m quite proud of it.) Finally, every time I show this to anyone I always preface the conversation with “No deer were injured in the making of this mount.” I hope you enjoy this.

WooHoo! Congratulations Courtney!

I'm takin' the 5th! Come on shed season! In the meantime, can someone dig something out of their closet to post to hold us over? At this point, I'll take something turning to chalk in your back yard.

This is my first trail cam and I'm still working out the kinks (wrong date on the pics, for example) but got some coyote pics last night. Next, I'll try the video function. Also, I found that Jason's Covert II (SG 550) review and all the comments thereto apply to the covert II. But without further ado, here are the pics:

Well done! And it looks like it might have been three generations out in the field. Way to pass it on. That's what life's all about! The smile his first pig put on his face is priceless.

Covert II Trail Cam from CWT.com
Jimmer Negamanee replied to Jimmer Negamanee's topic in Trail Cameras
Yes, finally success with my coyote pic quest. And yes, I used an attractant. It’s a little concoction I call “coyote crack.” It consists of a mixture of saved grease from cooking various and sundry meats throughout the week and a not so secret ingredient, dog food. Warm up the grease, add the dog food and voila, coyote crack. The corridor where I run my digital trap line (of one trail cam) is pretty narrow. I figure there are about 25 yds of right of way to the east and west of the railroad tracks. But I thought I’d put something smelly and tasty in front of my cam to help my odds a little. Being in the city limits, people also walk their dogs there (it’s not far from a dog park.) So, I also got a pic of one English Pointer and a Rhodesian Ridgeback who also think coyote crack is quite nifty. Thanks for the trail cam, Amanda. I am having a blast!
