    Covert II Help Needed

Nope. As far as I can tell on my Covert II it's an either/or deal depending on what you select in the menu. What I usually do is set it for pictures first. Then I go check it and if I get pictures of something I think is video worthy I select the video option (but that's fairly rare because it's not easy to get a critter to linger long enough for good videos + I like pictures better because you can quickly tell if there's an animal in it as opposed to watching the whole video for a 1 second animal appearance.) It makes sense to have the operator make the pic. v. video selection because there is know way for the camera to know what you'd prefer for that particular event. With that said, there may be a way to pull still pictures from video but that would be something you'd have to do at home in the editing stage.

opinions, advice, etc. for a Coues greenhorn

Welcome to CWT.com! Good call on hiring a guide. That will, among other things, obviate the need for question #4. You’ll have a great hunt and have an absolute blast! My only advice is to be ready to hunt ALL day (which I’m sure you are) and trust your guide (he’s probably out glassing as I type). Looking forward to the write up with pictures of your hunt! (And for the record, a 100 inch coues buck is a first second of the first day deer for me.)

    Total Eclipse of the Moon

The winter solstice and a full lunar eclipse at the same time? Makes me wish I were a Druid! Thanks for the information. I'll be setting my alarm.

    It has been bugging me…

+1 Socrates said that the unexamined life is not worth living. It's good to examine our beliefs and philosophies on hunting (or anything else) from time to time. We either walk away with our point of view strengthened, modified, or completely changed. So I thank you for this thread too. Western hunting is much different than hunting in other parts of the country but I don't see how the 800 yd shot you described does not end with a hunter on his hands and knees half a mile from where he took the shot looking for the tiniest droplet of blood, just in case. Even if he thought it was a clean miss. That would disturb me immensely.

    Bobcat catches squirrel

Wow! Very unique pictures! In the context of the first several pictures, I really like the one with the bobcat looking to its left. He looks very satisfied with his squirrel hunting prowess. Thanks for posting.

May you still be around to hunt at 86 yrs old.

Mr. Quimby, Two points to consider: 1. If you add up all the hunting you’ve done ( species hunted, location hunted, hours spent in the field, etc. ), I would bet that you’ve hunted more than 100 average hunters who lived to be 100 years old. 2. That place in Greer probably has a porch just perfect for a recliner. Either way, you win. Looking forward to the pictures of your spring gobbler. -Jimmer

Don't know who's it is but it has to be one of the most unique sticker sightings I've heard of. Thanks for taking the time to post it.

    Golden quail

Could be leucistic. Here are selected quotes from the article link below (underscore added): What is Leucism? Leucism, or leukism, is an abnormal plumage condition caused by a genetic mutation that prevents pigment, particularly melanin, from being properly deposited on a bird’s feathers. As a result, the birds do not have the normal, classic plumage colors listed in field guides, and instead the plumage have several color changes, including: •White patches where the bird should not have any •Paler overall plumage that looks faint, diluted or bleached •Overall white plumage with little or no color discernable Leucistic and Albino Birds Albinism is another genetic condition that can turn a bird’s plumage pale, but there are distinct differences between albino and leucistic birds. Leucism affects only the bird’s feathers, and typically only those with melanin pigment – usually dark feathers. A leucistic bird with different colors may show some colors brightly, especially red, orange or yellow, while feathers that should be brown or black are instead pale or white. Some leucistic birds, however, can lose all the pigment in their feathers and may appear pure white. Albinism, on the other hand, affects all the pigments, and albino birds show no color whatsoever in their feathers. Furthermore, an albino mutation also affects the bird’s other pigments in the skin and eyes, and albino birds show pale pink or reddish eyes, legs, feet and a pale bill, while leucistic birds often have normally colored eyes, legs, feet and bills.
