    Stupid hunter

It looks like several news outlets are reporting this like it's true. Shocking.

    Stupid hunter

With how easy it is to manipulate photos nowadays I'm skeptical that this is real. If it's real, it's quite sad. I can imagine the scene if G&F scanned it and found an ID chip. What an awkward phone call. "Hello, this is Mrs. Smith." "Hello Ma'am, I'm Warden Jones for the G&F Dept." "What is the regarding?" "Do you own a dog named Balto." "Yes! He's been missing for two days!" "Well Ma'am, we have good news and bad news. Which do you want first?" "The good news please!" "Very well. We found Balto."

free female Doberman, 7 mos old, good pup...

Awesome update! Thank you! (I saw the post and started scrolling then saw it was from 2015 and thought this must have been resurrected by a scammer making some unrelated comment with poor English and an embedded link which would download malware to my computer if I clicked it. So glad it was an update. Seeing Cleo healthy and happy part of a great family warmed my heart on an early Sunday morning. Thanks again.)

    12a archery deer

Thanks for the field report. I'm sorry you didn't connect on the buck you stalked but it sounds like you got to be in wild places for a good, extended amount of time. So big "congrats" on that. It's good to be away and rinse off the societal slime that get caked on over the preceding year. Great to hear about the fawn numbers.

    Tag question

Good point. I need to change the set up for that joke to make it more believable.

    Tag question

I agree with everyone that each hunt stands on its own. So, the answer is "no." But it's fun to keep the old unfilled tags in your vehicle and, after being field checked by the wildlife manager (aka, game warden), pull them out and ask "Hey, I didn't fill these tags. Can you go ahead and process my refund here or do I need to go to a Game & Fish office?" That joke always kills.

    Falconry license

I’ve always thought falconry was fascinating but have never taken the plunge. I did hear though (and maybe someone with more knowledge can chime in or correct me if I’m wrong) that when you eventually get to the point of taking the bird out of the aviary for exercise, training, or hunting flights, knowing your bird’s accurate weight is very important. As was explained to me, they only come back to the handler if they are hungry enough to be tempted by the morsel of meat the falconer is offering. If they are too satiated, they will fly off and sit on a tree or light pole and just checking things out for hours until they get hungry enough to fly back to the falconer or just fly off to look for food elsewhere. A guy that I knew who was a falconer (back in the 1980's) who would trap wild adult birds, acclimate them to humans, get them to associate him with food and entice them to come to him with meat from distance (which they would do IF hungry enough, hence the weighing mentioned above). When he no longer had time to devote to the bird, he would just release it back into the wild because the bird was a wild bird and already knew how to be a wild raptor. If there is an option of raising the raptor from a chick (and I don’t know if this happens) then my guess is that the commitment is for the life of the raptor because release wouldn’t be an option because that bird would be imprinted on humans would not know how to be a wild raptor. This is website for a falconry store but might have helpful information: https://www.mikesfalconry.com/home-2

SOLD - 15x56 Swarovski SLC - Like New

IDK the seller but I'll bump this for great glass that is priced to sell. The value proposition only goes up because it has Outdoorsmans bino stud (which I assume goes with the glass). This will go fast.

    Found a stray - Chandler

I agree. Google African Spurred Tortoise or Salcata Tortoise or African Spur Thighed Tortoise and you'll see lots of pics and get good information. As an exotic species, it likely an escaped pet. They surprisingly good escape artists. They can bump up against fence gates repeatedly (slowly of course) and disengage the latch and they can tunnel out of enclosures. Then they're off to the races! (Again, slowly). Someone may be looking for it. Or someone may not be looking for it if they either don't know it's gone or aren't sad to see it go. They aren't bad pets and can show some personality but they can dig a lot and, as Sky Island Junkie said, they get HUGE. If you can't find the owner you could make a pet out of it or maybe call the Phoenix Herpetological Society to see if they have any suggestions. https://www.phoenixherp.com/ If your family wants a tortoise but don't want the commitment of a Salcata maybe consider adopting a Sonoran Desert Tortoise through AZGFD. They are smaller and are a native species and can't be released to bolster wild populations because they can introduce diseases that can rage through wild population. https://www.azgfd.com/wildlife/nongamemanagement/tortoise/captivecare/ Good luck and let us know how this turns out. -Jimmer

Sounds like they adopted you. Resistance is futile. Sometimes we find our dogs. Sometimes our dogs find us. Post pics if you're so inclined. They sound like good dogs.

    Geology Help

I don't know what that is but I do have a geology meme to contribute. (It's difficult to find a segue for a geology meme.) Did you have to dig for it or was it just lying on the surface? Let us know when you get confirmation.

    *UPDATE*Hitting a deer with a ricochet...

Thank you for the update! With all the variables involved, stuff happens, even when we're hyper-responsible and 100% confident in the set up and shot. I understand that coyotes and ravens need to eat too but I can imagine your relief when you saw that he lived to fight another day. Now we can share in that feeling. Looking forward to that November update!

Finally going home. AZ here we come!

I'm sorry for your loss but you proved by your actions how to be a good, dutiful son. Your mom, no doubt, appreciated that but you also taught your son an invaluable and irreplaceable lesson on the importance of family. And you taught that lesson by your actions, not merely words. Now, welcome back to our beloved Arizona! You'll be glad that you made the move now instead of waiting for more "security" because each additional year of "security" is one less year of being mobile enough to really explore and experience this great Arizona landscape. Looks like I'm taking the long way around the barn. To be more concise: Welcome Back! Looking forward to hearing about your adventures with your son.
  24. I saw the first white-winged dove of the year in my back yard this AM (March 25th). Anyone else been seeing them?

On the topic of apologies, this is the best apology ever. It's from the 1988 movie A Fish Called Wanda: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mI7ldxcio0
