Jimmer Negamanee replied to JMP's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Mexico
Sweet soundtrack too! You sent me off to investigate some bands I hadn't heard before. Thanks for posting! -
So, on principle, he doesnt "think it prudent to tell" the government what firearms he owns but then he goes on to tell a U.S. Senator (and the entire Internet) that he owns a "semi-automatic AR-15"? Interesting strategy.

Beautiful buck! Congratulations! Thanks for posting and welcome to the site! (I like your signature line too.)

Immortalized is a new T.V. series which, according to the AMC website, “brings viewers into the captivating and provocative world of creative and competitive taxidermy. Each episode will feature one of four highly regarded "Immortalizers" facing off against a "Challenger" in a competition. Their task is to create a piece to be judged on three criteria: originality, craftsmanship and interpretation of the designated theme. Whether the artists are known for their classic or rogue creations, each week they will work to perfect this centuries-old art form in an unprecedented battle. "No Guts, All Glory." Premieres Thu., Feb. 14 at 10/9c, only on AMC.” Here’s a link to a preview of the first episode (link good as of 2-4-12, might need to scroll down a bit): http://zachselwyn.com/ Of course they do play up the tension and drama for ratings but it’s cool to see a bit of the taxidermy process and end results. BTW, this show has an Arizona connection because the host Zach Selwyn is originally from Tucson. He fronts the band Zachariah & the Lobos Riders who, according to Zach Selwyn’s website, “take honky-tonk jukebox songs, mix them with windswept early 70’s psyche-desert hip-hop lyricism and toss in freestyle rap verses.” (I have several Zachariah & the Lobos Riders CDs that provide “songs for the drive.” I like the Arizona/desert refences.) Here’s a link to their song Tucson Afternoon from the CD Ghost Signs (May I also recommend the CD Alcoholiday):

American Sniper
Jimmer Negamanee replied to DesertBull's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
So very sad. I read this about him and I think it speaks to what a class act he was: “In a February 2012 interview with NBC News, Kyle said he didn’t want to put the number of kills in the book but the publisher insisted. “If I could figure out the number of people I saved, that’s something I would brag about,” he told NBC News' Lester Holt.” He was still trying to do good and help his fellow vets to the end. I’ll be buying the book (or like DB, the audio book to listen to on the commute). -
(Editor's note: It looks like SBD's original link isn't working.) I'll try to provide another here: _____________________________________________________________________________ I know this is an old post but it's fascinating. I remembered it when I ran across this article about a Russian family that took off to the wilderness to escape persecution. The story includes a reference to persistence hunting that reminded me of this post. Here's a link to the article: http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history-archaeology/For-40-Years-This-Russian-Family-Was-Cut-Off-From-Human-Contact-Unaware-of-World-War-II-188843001.html Here's the relevant quote: "Yet the Lykovs lived permanently on the edge of famine. It was not until the late 1950s, when Dmitry reached manhood, that they first trapped animals for their meat and skins. Lacking guns and even bows, they could hunt only by digging traps or pursuing prey across the mountains until the animals collapsed from exhaustion. Dmitry built up astonishing endurance, and could hunt barefoot in winter, sometimes returning to the hut after several days, having slept in the open in 40 degrees of frost, a young elk across his shoulders."

More bad news from another gun-free zone...
Jimmer Negamanee replied to biglakejake's topic in Elk Hunting
My favorite quote from the article: "Last summer, a tourist standing too close to an elk was scratched in the eye by its antlers." The verb "scratch" is not what generally comes to mind when I think of elk antlers touching eyeballs. Maybe the guy was lucky. -
Awesome! What a relief. Way to stick with it and not give up five minutes before the miracle!

I am a supporter of the 2nd Amendment. I believe that, ultimately, it’s the amendment that protects all the other amendments. I despise the term “assault rifle” for the same reason no one calls baseball bats and axe handles “assault sticks.” But when elementary school children are mowed down by a psychopath with a semi-automatic weapon, there will always be a reaction. Maybe it’s a knee-jerk reaction that is ineffective and illogical. (As was pointed out here, Mexico has VERY strict gun laws but there is still a great deal of gun violence there.) The frailties of human logic and understanding, however, do not mean that the reaction will always be rational. But it seems natural that there will always be a reaction. We’re Americans, after all. We’re “doers”. Not “do-nothingers”. I don’t see how the reaction to Sandy Hook is “Do nothing.” If we all agree that firearms should be kept out of the arms of convicts and the insane, do we all agree that background checks are a good idea? If we all agree that background checks are a good idea, are we okay with making the selling of a firearm by a private party to a private party without a background check illegal? Maybe if you want to divest yourself of a firearm, you should either melt it down or sell it to a person/business with an FFL who can’t turn around and sell it without doing a background check? You may get less money for it than you will from a private party (the person/business with the FFL will want to make a profit, after all), but consider the benefit of having a paper trail so that IF the gun ends up at a crime scene you can point to something that says you got rid of it beforehand. Of course, this would mean no more private sellers at gun shows, in the newspapers or online. Good or bad? Not necessarily sure. For the strict constructionists among us, Second Amendment says “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” (Underscore added.) It doesn’t say that the right to sell arms shall not be infringed. Does that make it okay? Would requiring private parties to sell guns to a person/business with an FFL, who would, in turn, require a background check before reselling it be a Second Amendment infringement? At the very least, it’s not doing nothing. As always, more questions than answers.

Great buck and great pictures! Thanks for posting.

Wow! I was also concerned about the outcome. I’m sure the WM violated about fifteen policies and procedures but ultimately he did the right thing and the homeowner seemed appreciative. I was afraid the homeowner was gonna yell “Dang Game and Fish! They ruined my swing set!”

I'm not suggesting that this article will make anyone feel better but I thought it was an interesting perspective. (And it does not mention that he signed a law letting people carry concealed weapons in national parks which I think we would all agree is a good thing.) http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/frame_game/2012/11/obama_the_moderate_republican_what_the_2012_election_should_teach_the_gop.html

But you may want to be sitting down for this. (I mean this literally. Apparently sitting on your back porch, being distracted by a good book, maybe some sun tea, and this lovely spring weather really brings them in. ) Notice how no one in this article yelled "Hey! Git!" before the bite. http://www.azcentral.com/community/peoria/articles/2012/03/14/20120314peoria-coyote-attacks-ark.html

I’ve slept (restlessly) in my SUV down there before and haven’t had any night-time encounters. I did, however, pick up some of these motion-sensing LED lights and put one on each side of my vehicle (they stick with magnets): http://www.smarthome.com/4621W/Sylvania-LED-Motion-Sensor-Light-White/p.aspx I can’t say that they necessarily keep my safer but they do make me feel better in that if someone approaches they will be illuminated so I’d be able to see them and it’d be harder for them to see in. You can get them at Ace Hardware and, occasionally, at Costco. Good luck on the hunt!
