Notice from CWT upon opening website

I had that message and had to keep declining but today I figured out there was a drop down menu by the don't allow response that gave me the option of never allowing it. I clicked that and closed out and restarted and the message didn't come back up. Maybe that will work for you. I thought the issue was just my computer or browser until I saw your post. Thanks for bringing it up.

    Glassing question

Great observation here. “Glassing” as we traditionally know it (optics on a tripod) is very difficult with a spotting scope. Glassing requires time behind the glass, stability, and no eye strain. Time is required because you’ll be looking at the same field of view over time so you can let the deer move (even just flick an ear sometimes). Stability is required because a shaking field of view will mask minor movement like the aforementioned ear flick. And no eye strain is required because squinting, headaches and other types of strain will reduce the first two factors. Your time behind the glass will be reduced by headaches which make you take your eye out of the spotting scope to look to look away and stability is reduced by squinting and other micro-adjustments which cause shakiness or at least the appearance of movement. And because spotting scopes are usually heavier than even high-power binos, they’re generally shakier on a tripod than binoculars without any human movement. So although not great for glassing, spotting scopes serve an important purpose. To me, their purpose is discerning objects at the very edges of our binoculars’ capabilities. Is that deer a buck or a doe? Is that object a bedded deer or a tree stump? (I’ve spent many minutes waiting for a rock to move because it looked like a deer through my binoculars. It’s a huge time and effort savings to be able to make the “rock” call before investing all that time watching or hiking to get closer.) For hunters to whom scores matter, spotting scopes are great for counting tines or discerning between a 100 inch buck and a 110 inch buck. Regarding the angled vs. straight debate, there are pros and cons for each and it can come down to personal preference and glassing style. If you’re usually looking up to mountains from the flats, for instance, angled can be great. If you end up looking down a lot, straight can be great. After a great deal of struggle with your exact question, when I pulled the trigger on a spotting scope I went with straight. I like it because I can quickly whip the binos off and put the spotter up without having to move the tripod up or down or change my head position. Plus, it seemed that a lot of my mentor hunters went with straight. So that factored in too. Whether you end up with straight or angled, you’ll get used to it and then cognitive dissonance will kick in and convince you that you made the right choice. 😊 As with any optics though, my one piece of advice is to the buy the best quality you possibly can. At high power, you’ll really notice the difference in quality. As important as this principle is for binoculars, it might be even more important for spotting scopes. Good luck on your quest and let us know what you end up with.

Lots of lessons in this article!

Then he could have made that argument. I, for example, despise the "Wild and Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act." The horses and burros are simply feral horses and burros and represent in invasive species that are extremely harmful to range land and wildlife. I talk about the need to change that law often. Conservationist, environmentalists, and cattle growers should be arm in arm trying to change that law which was based not on ecology or biology but on the cuteness and and unhistoric, romanticized view of the West. Or, if a person wants to practice civil disobedience, that's up to them. But do it openly and get people talking about it. A a person shouldn't sneak around and gut shoot them, hoping to get away with it. That's my point.

Very true. We all have the right to remain silent. But we don't all have the ability. Comedian Ron White has a good bit about that.

Not violating the law in the first place mighta been a good start. But maybe I'm just old fashioned that way. Glad they got a conviction. Like I've said before, if someone disagrees with a law, they should work to change it. If they feel that the best way to draw attention to the law in order to change it is to violate the law (America has a long and proud history of civil disobedience, after all) then they should do so openly with a willingness to suffer the consequences. We all have a right to speak for ourselves at our own sentencing. He coulda used that opportunity to say what he disagreed with, why he disagreed with it, and why he took the actions he too. Instead, he was all sneaky and the story is shrouded in lies. To each, his own though. It was his choice.

    Ringtail or Coatimundi or Racoon?

I agree with the racoon call. They're a lot more common around here than you'd think. You're bound to get some more pics soon to remove all doubt. Post 'em up when you do!

    Ladder treestand on a saguaro??

I don't know about the legality. (Although, I agree with others that it's probably illegal.) But regardless of legality, it seems incredibly unsafe. Saguaro's have shallow roots and are top heavy. Adding more weight to the top and strapping yourself in seems like a Darwin Award waiting to happen.

    Hitchhiking Quail

You tried your best to help the little feller. There was nothing else you could do. Nature can be cruel and random sometimes. Doves are not exactly master nest builders and sometimes pick very precarious nest sites. I had one build a nest on the very skinny end of a palo verde tree in my front yard. She laid two eggs but the first monsoon erased all trace of the nesting site. Good luck on your hunt and let us know how it goes.

    Unknown scat

I recommend staying a member of the site and keep contributing, commenting, and asking questions. Our members are diverse and the opinions are as well. Some, I agree with. Some, I vehemently disagree with. (For the latter, though, I generally just ignore the post and move on and not let it color my view of the site as a whole.) The founder and administrator of the site whose handle is CouesWhitetail is female and working biologist who has already spent more time in the back country than the rest of us can dream of. She answered your question "javelina" and I concur. She works hard to keep the site civil and has even made a dedicated protected forum for political discussions so people can bash "libtards" or "republican'ts" to their heart's desire without bothering the rest of us. But, in reality, it's the Internet and the ability to control the discourse is limited. Your post was not the first one to post a picture of scat and ask for an ID. I think that says a lot about how cool this site is. But, although humans age, we have a remarkable ability to stay immature for our entire lives. I'm Exhibit A in the regard. Consequently, when the topic of poop comes up there are bound to be jokes and insincerity. So consider sticking around.

Could you post a picture or link to the RZ 600 reticle that's on the Conquest HD5? I've googled it but have come up with several similar looking but slightly different results. Thanks.

    Outdoorsman Setup

For what you describe, I'd go with an Outdoorsmans pistol grip WITH a panning attachment. The pistol grip is strong and maneuverable but the panning attachment adds hands-free panning because once you set the panning tension right you can move your field of view laterally (panning) with just a tap of the bridge of your nose without ever taking your eyes out of the binos. (Set the tension light enough that you can pan with pressure but with enough tension that it stops moving when you stop touching it.) IF a big spotting scope was going to be a significant part of your plan, you might want the Outdoorsmans pan head or the Jim White pan head (also now an Outdoorsmans product). Let us know what you end up with. You'll have a blast! Post pics of your hunt too. We'd love to see them.

Wow! Great footage. I love the coyote trot. It must be efficient because it seems like they can do that all day. My cattle dog/border collie mix does that. Thanks for posting.

    AZ Unit 23 Archery Deer

To me, PMing someone who speaks negatively about the entire population of your state and, therefore, you personally, is more honorable and certainly more gentlemanly than engaging in a public internet urinating exhibition. We may not agree with the politics of our neighboring states (or even of our own state) but to say that we dislike nearly 40 million fellow Americans based on the state in which they reside is an overreach. Josh, 23 is a huge and very diverse unit. There are no bad areas. There's thick timber in the northern parts but there are also lots of places to glass from throughout the unit. Get good binoculars and put them on a good tripod. You'll be surprised at what you see. It may not be what you have a tag for but, nonetheless, it'll be cool.
