Back country backpack trip for Coues
AZMThunter replied to AZ_SAWBUCK's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I have a detailed backpacking gear list in an excel doc that I just tried to post, but it came out like crap. Email me and I will send it to you. It is not hunting specific, but the changes would be minor. Add the weapon / ammo, glass andd tripod, game bags, and a havalon knife. Sub out some ultralight clothing for camos. That would be it. First year I took my oldest boy up there must have been 99 or 2000... Seems like a long time ago lol. 1500 tags on that hunt and there were kids with guns everywhere! Wicked fun and totally frightening at the same time.

I can't wait to hear how this ends for that family of jackwagons... keep us up to date.

Do you really believe that the issue the anti's have is the high fence? They hate everything we do and everything we stand for - We should NEVER try to appease them... Their goal is the end of hunting - whatever baby steps it takes to get there they will do, like focus on the canned hunts. Which is EXACTLY why we should all support every guy and gal out there putting meat on their table LEGALLY and present a united front in the fight to preserve our hunting privileges. That old "United We Stand" stuff still has modern day meaning.

As long as it was taken legally, I have no problem with someone dropping that elk. It should certainly not be a B&C or P&Y entry, but it is cool to look at. I look at it the same way I look at the couple times I have gone hog hunting in Texas and sat in a 100 square foot tripod stand and arrowed hogs when the corn feeder went off... It isn't the same as an actual hunt - but it was fun none the less, provided lots of great meat, and most important - Was perfectly legal. We gotta stop slamming other hunters (flintlock better than percussion cap better than bolt action better than semi auto - longbow better than recurve better than compound better than crossbow.) If they didn't break the law - support them, at least publicly. The anti's love all this internal bickering.

I skipped adding the SS# on the setup last week. I called AZGFD and they entered the info manually - with more than expected effort. My screen now shows me only the bonus points through the Spring 2015 hunts. I cannot see my license info or any previous application/draw info. I read an earlier post about having a "family" link on the portal, so I called AZGFD a couple minutes ago and asked... The gal I spoke with checked with someone and said that they didn't have anything like that. I am so confused.

Never had lion... one of these days though. That is a real deal butcher block top, too. Sweet.

I drew an 27 early bull archery with my dad. im headed out after easter to start scouting Try to take out some extra large coyotes on those scouting trips.

Surprised by all the caribou votes... Growing up in AK may have jaded me a little, but the best bou is jerkey - and that is a relative term. My ranks? Dall Sheep Pronghorn Moose Elk (young cow is just criminally good) Bison Lots of close ones after that. And as for birds? Ptarmigan Quail Pheasant Goose Duck

Don't get me wrong - I think flying one of those would be a ton of fun. I just think that using them for scouting and/or a hunting aid is NOT ok. And for those of you saying they should be OK for scouting... Well, aren't a pretty high percentage of hunts going on right before the next hunt? I mean, your scouting time is often somebody else's hunting time. The battery life, optic quality, and flight distance are only going to increase as the technology advances. And the first time some animal rights wacko uses one to put your mug on Youtube sitting on that ridge with a rifle, everybody's gonna be ticked. I look forward to that about as much as I do visiting a water tank in unit 9 that has (11) game cameras on it.
-
Please fly a drone past me when I am on the ridge glassing... The ridge that I left camp at 4:00am to hike in the dark so I could be set up an hour before first light. I'll shoot that flying lawn mower out of the sky or run out of ammo trying. Except that 1 round that I'll keep just in case the drone owner is dumb enough to get feisty about losing his toy.

Just pulled mine up online... 3 times. I don't remember this being a problem when they took my money.

So, for all of you whiners that have been on this site the last few years complaining (3) times a year about the delay in getting your draw results and "Why can't they just say when they will come and and stick to it?" - It would appear you have gotten your wish. The tags will be mailed out today, and we still don't know where our spring hunts will be. Well done Delta Bravos'! If this happens again for the elk & antelope results, I am going to form a lynch mob to hunt you complaining tools down and tattoo your foreheads with a PETA logo! Now call AZGFD, apologize for sniveling in the past, and make them post the results!
-
Don't the tags have to be mailed out by 11/21 this year? I don't remember the results coming out this close to the actual mail-out deadline.

What unit is everyone hunting on Friday?
AZMThunter replied to azbackwoods's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
I am dressing up as a non tag holding dad / uncle with 2 sons, a nephew, a father in law, and an uncle in law all on the antler search in unit 9. I won't be busy or anything. -
self important? when i read this, i realize how much different all our perceptions of reality are. Yes... Self important. As in - if you think that your feelings and opinions should be everyone's feelings and opinions, you are self important. And by the way, one of the lines you highlighted in bold, "I do not feel sadness when I kill an animal I am hunting," would appear to have been highlighted as some type of indictment about my feelings toward animals. Note the "...animal I am hunting" portion of the quote. I have felt sadness when I hit a rabbit with my truck. I felt absolutely distraught when Hawken, my yellow lab, died last summer at 14. Felt anger and sadness toward an abused and neglected horse I saved in my early twenties. But no, I don't feel sadness when I hunt. If it made me sad, I would stop doing it.

Wow... I laugh all the time when dove hunting with my boys and friends when something funny happens with a shot. Laughed a lot growing up with my brother hunting prairie dogs and squirrels up in WA. I have even laughed at something funny that happened on big game hunts. If it's funny, laugh at it. I had no idea I was such a sociopath or idiot - thanks for enlightening me. I do not feel sadness when I kill an animal I am hunting, I feel proud to be a part of my families traditions, honored to be sharing the outdoors and those hunting experiences with the people I love, satisfaction sometimes of a long planned and scouted hunt that ended with meat in the freezer - I won't apologize for enjoying every second of it. If you are so self important that you are going to openly criticize fellow hunters because they can laugh at funny things that happen, you would be doing all sportsmen a favor by keeping your bashing to your commiserating buddies. You are the hunters that the anti crowd love to feature on their cover pages... "Even this lifelong hunter knows deep down that what they are doing is wrong." Lighten up - I'll let you know when I need you to tell me how I should feel. Sheesh!

I backpack a lot (youngest boy still in scouts) like 200-400 miles a year. What works for any one person doesn't work for everybody. That said, here is my solution. No waterproof boots - They don't breath after the AZ dust clogs up the Gore tex and they only hold moisture in when it warms up - or when you step in water above the ankle height of the boot. Better to have a boot that lets moisture out and dries than have one that stays wet for days at a time. I do wear waterproof boots in very cold weather with snow, but that isn't usually the case in AZ. Socks - I only wear one pair at a time, but always have a spare pair in my pack. If I am hiking enough that my feet get moist with sweat (or dew / rain / etc.) the next break I take I switch my socks out. If it isn't raining out, I safety pin the moist socks to the outside of your pack and they will be dry in a half hour. Any time I am taking a 20 minute break while hiking, my boots are off so my feet are drying. You will go straight to callouses using this method and skip the blisters altogether. Warm damp feet get blisters. Cool dry feet do not - assuming there isn't a boot fitment issue. And - NO COTTON. I know that should go without saying, but figured I would say it.

So, I called AZGFD and found out that we no longer need to purchase a 2015 license when we put in for the 2015 Spring hunts. This raises a couple other questions... Aren't out license #'s on our tags? I was just looking at a buddies elk tag and it is on there... Won't this get confusing with, say, my 2014 License number on my 2015 Javelina tag? Second, and it is minor, but it seems like there is now a way to work the system a little when it comes to the needing a license in order to apply scenario - especially for non-resident licenses.
-
Ummmm, why are we paying full price for a license that is only good for 9 months... I already have a license through Dec 31 of 2014. If I buy a 2015 license now, it will basically cover me for Jan1, 2015 through Sept 30, 2015. Either the 2015 license should be prorated for only (9) months, or I should be refunded (3) months worth of my 2014 license.

Read all of them, been following Nate and Joe since the beginning. These and the Longmire series are a few of my current favorites.

DOVE SEASON

Were you where I was this morning? I was at a dairy with my two sons and a buddy - big grey ford f-350. -
DOVE SEASON
AZMThunter replied to elkaholic's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
So are they just not flying in north of phoenix or do I just need to switch areas. 6:00 to 8:00 this morning with my oldest son (he's a firefighter in Yuma and comes home on his off days) and we had 3 doves combined. This is brutal so far this year. Gonna head south to a dairy tomorrow morning, but drives like that make dove hunting a one or two time per year thing. -
DOVE SEASON
AZMThunter replied to elkaholic's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Opening day my youngest and I went out around Horseshoe, where we usually see plenty of doves. 5:45 to 10:45 had a combined 3 doves. Went to Carefree Hwy and didn't do much better. I am really missing the dairy farm that shut down access. No more before school hunting for the kid till we find a place where they are flying... Momma is OK with missing the morning classes a few times, but only if there are doves to show for it. Trekking down too far south makes it tough to get back to Horizon HS at any reasonable time lol. had OK luck this morning around carefree, but it was quail hunting for doves... Almost none flying, had to bust them up while walking and they stayed close to the ground.
