Wifes first coues and first hunt ever
cohntr6 replied to zola23's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
That is sweet! My wife has shot a couple mule deer in Colorado but this will be her first coues hunt at the end of November. Should be fun! What do you have your wife shooting? Thanks for the post. Jeff -

Welcome! What are your expectations? What type of buck are you looking for? I dont think it would be hard to kill a small to average (up 80") size buck on this tag and during this hunt. I am new to coues hunting (and AZ) and live in Safford so I have hunted this unit the last two years and my father in law and wife have the late november/early december hunt in 31 for this year (nothing for me). My good neighbor has the same tag as you so I'll probably be helping him when I can. My first year was a learning curve and last year I killed a nice 3x3 during the late nov. hunt (profile picture). I have also bowhunted the unit the last two years. All that said I am no expert on the unit but I'll answer your questions. I spend most of my time on the Safford side of mt Graham but have been to the Fort Grant (prison) area and was not dissapointed over there as well as Stockton Pass and Peay ranch areas to name a few. For the most part as soon as you leave the desert floor you can find whitetail all the way to the top of Mount Graham and of course anywhere inbetween. As stated above getting away from roads and atv trails helps. There is some really rough country if you are up to it and can get into it you will find better bucks, little to no hunting pressure, and great scenery. The first year (2007) I bowhunted was a week before Christmas and I saw some very rutty bucks so you should see rutting bucks, if not, bucks should be more 'visible' cruising for does. Last year the rut was wacky and I saw little rutting all the way through January. Hope it helps. Jeff

Ahh, I found it on the last page under 'limited opportunity (archery only) elk! Wow only 5 tags. Do you know how the other 4 did? Jeff

Great bull!! I didt know there was a archery hunt in 28. I see a general hunt for 28, 31, 32 that starts OCT. 2nd. I was considering a OTC in that unit since I live close. Were the elk bugling much? I am heading over there next week. Any general areas to start? I was thinking around Blackjack. Pm me if you want. Jeff

31 Late November/Early December
cohntr6 replied to Couescrazy33's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I had that tag last year and my wife and father in-law have it this year along with a few friends. It isnt hard to find deer if you find some rough country to watch. very few people get off the roads. Stockton Pass is usaully a zoo but has a lot of deer. Just get off the valley floor and any where around Mount Graham (yes even on top) will have deer. Hopefully the link works, it is the deer I shot last year on that tag, my first. http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...showtopic=11519 Jeff -
I am with you ac guy. Also, I just love to hunt. I do have my preferences. However in the fall I dont want to be sitting on my rear watching hunting movies wishing I had some tags to fill. Hunitng mulies is fun so is hunting whities. Those are some funny comments. Jeff

I saw a few whitey does along HW 78 (just west of Mule Creek) on my way home the other night. They were close to the AZ state line. I have spent some time on both sides of the state line and seen some great whitetails. Jeff
