I was able to draw unit 27 again this year and had an excellent hunt. It was really nice to roll out of my tent walk up a hill and be into elk every morning even after it seemed my tent was going to float away during Friday night's torrential rain. Despite having a few other folks hunting the area I saw several really good bulls up to about 370. I was able to get close to that 370ish 7x7 a couple times but never had a good shot on him. On Tuesday morning (17th) I was following and bumping and following and bumping (LOL) the elk around a rim of a canyon and finallly got close to this 6x6 and his cows. He acted like he was going to breed one of them as she brought him to me. I was able to bring some cows close and I got a perfect broadside shot at 21 yards. He only made about 80 yards (a little cow call slowed him down) and piled up while I watched it all. That was also the first time I have seen a elk go down that I have shanked. What a rush! A short pack down a steep hill with help from Lex and Don and the rest is history. Sorry, no tripod made for some interesting self portraits. Jeff

+1 on ELkDonkey! Thanks! My 13 year old daughter has this tag again. We were semi successful 2 years ago in shooting one but not recovering it for 2 days. We will hit that spot and another but wouldnt mind a spot like that! We will be at Y.O.U. elk camp too. Great time. Jeff

One of the first bulls killed in camp was a 363 and Greg's client killed about a 300 bull. Both of these were killed opening weekend. I'll bet Scott or Austin will put some pictures up of Ausin's bull....hint...hint Jeff

Ready2hunt, I was using an 85 grain Wac'em triton. I was able to recover it in the far lung in perfect shape. Jeff

I hunted in 27 this year AND last year and saw no "cluster" this year. I was initially worried about he 100 extra tags (cow and bull) but where I was hunting I saw no change in the number of people. You folks complaining about too many tags need to go where there isnt people. If your going to hunt against the rez line (in any unit) you know you are going to have other company. The more tags there are the more people are going to be hunting obvious/easy places and the easier it is to get away to the harder less accessable places. BTW, tags numbers will probably go up again next year in 1 and 27. I am all for getting drawn again! Jeff

Saturday (24th), my brother in law and I watched a 310ish bull raking trees, herding cows and was even bugling a little. Hunt some of the burn areas that have unburned timber in steep draws. I wouldnt worry about hunting water either. We got rained on twice while we watched the elk. Jeff

What are your plans/preparation? Have you done any scouting? Get a few elk hunting movies and watch them. Have you ever elk hunted before? Expectations? I had this hunt last year and I have the same hunt again this year. Last year I didnt have to do much calling because most bulls were pretty vocal so I just got the wind in my favor and went in on the bull. The hunt is less than SIX weeks away!!! I am excited to say the least. Jeff

I posted this picture last year but it is still haunting me. LOL A friend said this bull may have been killed in unit 1 during the archery hunt last year. I have pointed out a few distinguishing characteristics of his rack: ---long, "bent" 5ths on the right side ---injury and drop in the end of the main beam on the right side --- left G3 is either short (?) or the picture angle looks like it follows main beam --- left G2 very long Heavy main beams around 50-52" I realize he would have grown some more because the picture was taken 7/12 (stamp corrrect) As far as scoring him....I believe he is around 390 in the picture. I had a unit 27 archery tag last year and could not find him. I am lucky to have a archery bull tag again in unit 27 this year and would like to know if this bull is still alive, if anybody picked up his sheds or if in fact some super lucky person killed him last year. Any help/info/pictures/sightings would be appreciated! Here is the original picture I took and the bulls he was running with that 12th day of July. He is second from left. Two of the other bulls were no slouches either. Third bull from left has a split G3 on the right. Thanks, Jeff
