My 14 year old daughter gets her FIRST archery buck!
cohntr6 replied to huntlines's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
That is pretty darn awesome! My daughter Kaitlyn says hi to Kieryn and a big congratulations! What is your daughters bow set up, poundage, etc.? I was thinking of the Diamond Infinite Edge for my girls. Jeff -
Weatherby 257 magnum 80 grain Barnes TTSX for coues?
cohntr6 replied to dpr64's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I shot a whitetail with my daughters .250 Savage last year with a 80 grain TTSX and it worked perfectly. The 250 is considerably slower than the Weatherby but I was really impressed, the shot was just over 100 yards. I have shot 4 whitetail with 100 grain TSX bullets from my 257 Weatherby with just perfect results. I love these two .25 calibers! So to answer your question a well placed 80 grain TTSX will put any deer down. Jeff -
With the grass all around do you get pictures of grass blowing in the wind? Great pictures. Jeff

Great pictures! What Spypoint do you have taking the pictures? The elk ruined my IR-6 last year! Jeff

Requesting help/advice for Unit 31
cohntr6 replied to milquetoast's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
milquetoastI have the same tag but 2 hunts before you. Your late Oct. scouting trip will help out a ton. There are whitetail from the mesquite flats all around Mt. Graham to the top of Mt. Graham. The opportunity to get away from people is great because of the rugged canyons. Plus there is the Santa Teresa's. I would just pick a spot or 2 and focus on them . Jeff -
Welcome to CWT! Where are you coming from? You have a great tag. Here is a link to a post really close to yours: http://www.coueswhitetail.com/forums/topic/50955-3-unit-31-dec-tags/ I was self taught to hunt in my late teens because of divorced parents. I feel your pain. Jeff

You are correct with there being a lot variables that go in to reloading and finding the best accuracy. I actually like the load development stage, its fun I load different powder charges, powder, bullets, COAL (OCL, COL, OACL, etc.) in small numbers of rounds, head to the range and see what happens. Remember at the range try to keep any variables (shooting rest, position, barrel cleanliness/fouling etc.) to zero so you can pull 100% results from your reloads. Remember reloading books, manuals use SAAMI specifications for COAL and these are fairly generic numbers for what the actual COAL can be based on your particular chamber for your rifle. Or in other words you can go longer on your COAL so the bullet is closer the rifling so there isnt much bullet "jump" (less jump tends to better accuracy). There is much more to say about your question but basically load up a bunch different loads and see what shoots best at 100 yards then start to fine tune that load by changing powder charge up or down as well as your COAL. There is a better way to measure a round than COAL and that is using the base to ogive measurement since bullet length is not always the same. It can be more tedious though. Jeff

I think the whole no hunting in the Gila river corridor is dumb. Almost all of it is private land and the landowners should be able to make the call on being able to hunt the elk. A friend of mine in Pima says most of the cotton farmers dont like the elk. I agree hunlov, make it archery or crossbow only if there is worry about "safety". Too bad that bull probably had some more antler growth too. Hope the driver had insurance and is ok! Jeff

I am surprised I missed this post Scuba! Its been a while! Congrats! Jeff -
There is one other possibility....... Sheep tags could increase by one or two when populations go up. Rockies have been trapped in Morenci and relocated in unit 1/27 boundary for a few years. Despite some of those sheep dying in the Wallow fire, someday, they will have a huntable population. Some of you G&F bashers should think of a positive thing or two they do for our big game. Anybody know who drew unit 28 or 31/32? I only have 10 points for sheep but will always put in simply for the chance to draw. Needless to say I dont get to worked up when results come out. Congrats to those who drew! Jeff
-
Nothing for me or any friends. I know a few people at work that drew. How did you do? Is the salt/cameras showing up where we share a ridge? Jeff
-
Thanks for the number breakdown. Looks like the next one may be cheaper because you have tools now. Keep the target pictures coming Jeff

Very nice! I wish I had the talent to build a rifle. How much was the "parts" cost for the build? Jeff

I decided to get that tag several years ago and never saw an elk in 3 or 4 outings. I did find sign but never a tan hide. Hunting in the east end unit 28 is best up against New Mexico and close to the south end of unit 27 boundry and then on the other (west) end of 28 up against the San Carlos reservation. In unit 31/32 the most sign I have seen is the Bonita side of these units but there tends to be some private land around Bonita so keep that in mind.. I may be up for this tag if we dont draw any deer tags Jeff

Very nice group Sherman. What ended up being the 'perfect' load combination and COL? Great advice MTsourdough! Jeff

Edge, If you are ever on the eastern/southeastern part of the state I will gladly help exercise your horses. It has been years since I have been on a horse ( I am far from a great rider) but I enjoy it, especially if it was out looking for sheds! Great pictures! Jeff

I was up in 27 last weekend with a turkey tag in my pocket and all I found was deer sheds! Has the wind still been knocking trees over? Great find, thanks or sharing.. Jeff
