New Horizons in a Familiar Unit
caelkhnter replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Doug As usual, great pictures and report of your hunt. Thanks for the report. Looks like it was fun and you made the effort, just not in the cards this year. -
Off topic, but I had to reply to Shooter's post. I spent 7 summers in South East Alaska, 5 of them commercially fishing for salmon. That was back some years ago, 1976-1982. They were great summers and I really enjoyed being out on the Ocean!

Follow up Post form Don Martin: Guys: I'm in the process of getting the license plate of the truck. The jeep has personalized plate SheepLTD.. We're working on a flyer too. I'm told that the Coconino County Sheriff's Office is in charge of the missing persons case, I'll get their number and post it. Larry has been entered into the NCIC (National Criminal Investigation Center) database. I think the vehicles have too. Thanks for all you help guys, Larry is one of us and if we were out there missing, we'd want everyone looking for us. Don Martin

For those of you that haven't heard, my friend Larry Heathington, the owner of Sheep Limited, who lives in Williams has been missing since Friday, September 11th. Larry was suppose to meet two clients on Friday in New Mexico to go on a private lands antelope hunt, and when his cousin last spoke to him he was two hours from Secorro. He hasn't been heard from since Thursday afternoon. Larry was in his gray Ford F-350 Super Duty, towing his Jeep (photo attached) Sahara. A missing person's report has been made with the Holbrook, AZ Police Department as someone close to Larry said they had seen his truck/jeep on Monday in Holbrook. I will attach a photo of Larry on this post, and please, we are very concerned about this situation and fear for Larry's safety. If you know Larry, you know it is not like him to not show up where and when he is suppose to. If you know ANYTHING about where Larry is, or have seen his vehicles please contact the Holbrook PD or call me at 928-681-4867. Thank you, Don Martin Arizona Wildlife Outfitters This is a post form another website, but I thought it was important to p[butt it along here, to spread the word. It is not me but Don Martin who made the original post.

When does the San Carlos start selling tags?
caelkhnter replied to RoughCut's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Well I guess I am hooked. Last year was my first coues hunt and I had a great time on the San Carlos. My buddy and I were lucky enough to get January tags for next January. Not the same unit, this time it will be Unit D east, but I expect it will be a good hunt. I will now have to start gathering information about that unit, and yes I am already excited! -
I wanted to thank everyone for the kind and complimentary replies to my story. Yes Doug I am hooked and think I will be somewhere next year with Mark coues hunting. AzBow, the San Carlos was a great place to hunt. In addition to the coues and bear, during the hunt we also saw javelina, antelope, elk and of course coyotes. Thanks again to everyone.

I just thought I would provide a little more information about myself so that you would better understand where I am coming from. Even though I am primarily an archery hunter, over the years I have come to understand the benefits of spot and stalk hunting. As a result I have come to own some good optics. I have 10x42 Swaros, 15x56 Swaros and a good Swaro spotting scope. I have a bogen tripod, with the appropriate adaptors, and a light weight tripod for longer hiking trips. I have spent many hours on hunts behind the glass, so I can appreciate the advice about glassing. As far as discipline, again with the benefit of years of hunting I no longer need to take something to apprecaite success. Although I would not say I am a true Trophy hunter, I generally do not shoot anything that is not of better quality than my prior harvests. As a result, more often than not I do not harvest. However I still enjoy my hunts tremendoulsy. With respect to this hunt, I have never taken a coues so I have nothing to compare far as prior harvest. However I do not intend to take anything that is not "pretty good". Again my biggest concern will be to properly recognize what meets that criteria. S So what should I hold out for. It it unrealistic to hold out for a 100+ buck, assuming I can properly score it in the field? Should I set my sites lower? Learning how to field judge these deer is something I will spend some time on over the next several months. Keep in mind I will plan on spending the entire season hunting. I do appreciate that this is a great tag, and will not take it for granted.

Well she did not actually go and buy the tag, she had by life long hunting buddy make those arrangements. He will be going with me on this hunt. And yes I did thank her.

Doug thanks and it is unit B.

Hello everyone. I am new to this site. Redrabbit, a.k.a. Doug, pointed me in this direction in response to a request I made of him. I am a bowhunter who was raised in Az. I moved to CA. when I started my career. I continue to try and hunt Az. whenever I can, along with a number of other states in the southwest. My life long hunting buddy lives in Az and I own a cabin just outside of Flagstaff. So I still consider myself as being from Az. Anyway, my wife just informed me that she purcahsed me a coues tag for my 50th birthday for next season's rut hunt on the San Carlos. I have never really spent much time hunting coues and had asked Doug it if he could pass along any info. I have also just purchased Dwuane Adam's book from this site yesterday. So if anyone is willing to pass some info along to an old dog willing to learn, it would be appreciated. Jim
