    Flatline Maps!

whats every one think about these? I have one and think its awesome. they show every thing a Forest service map has plus contours, shaded relief, ground cover (trees/grass/ect.) tanks( with names) trails, unit boundary with some of the adjoining units to reference roads and such. I cant wait till they get more units out.

    Pan Head vs Ball Head

"Red Rabbit Posted Today, 03:06 PM Pan head for ease of panning and adjustment. But I would buy the legs separate and get the Manfrotto 700RC2 head as it moves smoothly and is relatively light. http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/site/manfro...=80&child=1 " +1 RR is right on as far as I'm concerned. I have a slik tripod with a Outdoorsmans Pan head and I use a Manfrotto 190 with the older version of the 700rc2 head. both options are great. The slik with the Outdoorsmans is lighter but the Manfrotto set up is rock steady, I can shoot a rifle off of it and the fluid pan head is great for video and digiscoping. good luck on your purchase. -sam

    WTB small tripod pan head

this is the head I had on that same tripod for a while until I made the Hyper leap to a slik AMT with an Outdoorsmans Panhead. This little guy is tiny and works good for the price. it weighs very little and is pretty darn tough to beat. I got mine at Bull basin in Flag. Im guessing you can find it a number of places for around $30-40, extra plates ran me about $10 each. http://www.amazon.com/Slik-Compact-All-Met...8682&sr=1-2 hope that helps. -sam

went to work on my day off

Pixman- those are some good shots. im still bummed about Navajo Falls demise, but the 50 Foot Falls is pretty cool and as time goes by it will get better and more travertine will build again. Coach- I agree to some extent that the North Rim is better in alot of ways. Mostly because I enjoy being in the middle of nowhere and even more I like seeing big deer and sheep! but there are a good chunk of people who dont give the south rim enough credit. there are just as big of deer, lots of sheep and then the bonus there are elk and antelope too! Its easy to forget the that there is far more to the south rim of grand canyon (about 1400 miles of actual rim) than just the parts in the little section by south rim village. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks we will have a whole weekend of and I can go show off the North Rim to her. Sowats along with Jump-Up and Crazy jug will all be on the agenda for that trip. Thanks for the kind comments -sam
  7. As one of my many forms of semi-employment I occasionally guide backpacking trips in and around Grand Canyon; that said I had a jaw dropping conversation with a particular young lady who I have been dating for a bit now. She informed me a week or two ago that she has now lived in Flagstaff for 5 years and never once even laid eyes on the the Grand Canyon! Lucky for her I've been known to know my way around. This brings us to this last week when we found a free afternoon to try and remedy her situation. After an afternoon of pulling out all my wild cards and going to some of the popular spots followed by some not so popular spots she admitted having a good time. We even ran in to some awesome lightning on The Rez coming home. I truly hope ya'l have made it up there at least a few times in your life, even though there aren't Coues deer up there (yet)! I just thought I'd share a few shot that I got while up there. hope you enjoy, -sam

    6a rocky

I have seen them in different places on different occasions. these few terrible pics were taken around the december coues hunt in 6A this last year and one of them was in january when I was just out looking at the mountains out of boredom. all three pics were taken through a nikon field scope spotter with a pentax optio camera and my home made A-dapter thing-a-ma-jig. I've seen a couple of decent rams ( not huge) I thought, but then again then only thing I know about a good ram to a not so good ram would be from something I have read. I look forward to seeing some one else's pics. congrats and good luck to the lucky feller who snagged that tag! cheers, sam

    Bogen tripod legs

I have a nearly brand new set of Bogen/ Manfrotto 3011 legs (no head included) this is a great stand-up glassing tripod with an over all extended height of 71" and folded length of about 22" the load rating on it is over 13# and I don't know the actual weight but would guess around 5-6#. this would work great for someone wanting to use "the Claw" or some other method of shooting because it is very sturdy. you can use a spotting scope while standing and get very little vibration. Bogen replaced this model with 055x which I also have, thus I don't need two tall tripods. I would like to get $80 for them but I am also up to trades if you have a smaller set of legs maybe we can work something out. I can get pictures to you if you PM me. Thanks, -sam

    Jim White vs Outdoorsman

well i'll throw in my 2cents. I personally have the Outdoorsmans pan head but I looked at the JW head several times too. They both are of the highest quality machining. If I remember right the JW might be a few ounces lighter but the deciding point for me was the pan handle. the JW is a twist handle that controls the tilt vs. the OD has the Bogen mindset with screws for pan and tilt pressure lock and the pan handle is just that a handle. It was just what I prefer. Either way you will have the best of the best. After all the Outdoorsmans carries both models and that has to say something, because they only support the best in the industry. Nothing on the market comes close to either on of these guys and using one makes glassing so much better its unbelievable. Hope that helps. good luck. -sam
