'Once in a blue moon' A CWT hunting story long overdue. (long read)
coyotekid replied to 308Nut's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
great write up. Great bucks! congrats to you and your cousin. -sam -
ok guys I meant to post these pics about two weeks ago but I have had a couple of good weekends of hunting and alot of grad school in the way! I got out for a few minutes before I sent my 20-60x eyepiece back and I took some pictures through the two eye pieces side by side for you. This is the 20-60 (at 20x) with with no camera zoom 25-50 (at 25x)with no camera zoom I put a circle on the pic of the 25-50w to show the difference of Field OF View. This is a shot of the difference in the ocular size the 20-60 on the left and the 25-50 on the right This is a shot of what I was looking at... good 'ol Mnt. Elden. this is the 25-50w (at 50x) with 2x camera zoom This is the 20-60 (at 45x) with 2x camera zoom The thing that I noticed about the two when taking pictures, the 25-50w is much easier to find the subject in your camera and lets more light in. at the top end of the 20-60x it is nearly impossible to keep the blur out. In the end they are both great eye pieces but I am very much happier with the 25-50w than I was with the 20-60. I sat be hind my spotting scope looking a deer for about 4 straight hours this last weekend and I wasnt cross eyed when we got up to go get him, so thats gotta be some good news! Hope this was a helpful review. Let me know if any of you have any other questions. Ryan, I remember meeting you. give me a call or email any time your up here and your more than welcome to set up my scope and look through it. -sam

Good morning, I know there is always an ongoing debate concernign optics, and I actually really like reading this section hearing everyone's sides. I just thought I would start another topic. I did a quick search and didn't see that this has been talked about before on here. If I am wrong please just point it out to me. so here is my question, what is the advantages/ disadvantages of the 25-50x Wide angle eyepiece vs. the good old 20-60x standard. is one better for digiscoping? is the limited range of magnification worth the extra field of view? does the extra FOV bring in more light? and the big one is... is the 25-50x worth the extra 200 bones? look forward to hearing all your input. you all are an awesome bank of information! good luck to all you who have oct. Deer tags. -sam

GREAT pics. I took a picture of a buck and doe during the archery hunt and the same thing happened to me as your last photo... my auto focus focused on the flowers and weeds in front of me and NOT on the buck! oh well still pretty cool pics.

yeah I think there are plenty of people alive and warm thanks to Mr. BUDDY heaters, we use them in the wall tent alot. In the big wall tent you will have to push and shove to huddle around it! we don't sleep with them on and usually only have them on for a half hour in the morning waiting for the coffee to perk and the truck to warm up; and then for a hour or two at night. like most wall tent ours is NOT air tight and has nice peak vents. we have used a old LP boiler burner in a small barrel wood stove with a chimney to heat the bigger tent. it beats having to cut a cord of wood while your trying to focus on the hunt. Good luck on your elk hunt. I'm not trying to high jack this tread but if any one has some clever ways they keep warm in a wall tent besides a wood stove and an Eddie Bauer down coat, I would love to hear about it. RR, thanks for looking out for everyone. CO sensors are a cheap insurance policy. -sam

Yes, absolutely. that is my plan this afternoon. I doubt I will be lucky enough to take a picture of game though it in the hour I have to get this done but I will take some landscape photos though both to see how much wider you can see at 25xW vs. the 20xS Before I send the 20x-60x back. I was on the Swarovski Optik web page this morning and here are the hard numbers to compare. --------------------20-60 -----------------25-50 FOV@1000yds----108-60ft ---------------128-81ft Apparent FOV -----40*-60*---------------60*-70* FOV degrees ------1.1*-2.1* -------------2.4*-1.6* Eye relief ---------17mm------------------17mm Weight ------------9.6 oz. ----------------10.4 oz. So it looks like from that data that the only draw back is ONE OUNCE. and about $150 bucks extra. stay tuned for photos. -sam

my bro and I killed one on Ceder Flat in 6A on saturday. we were at about 6000ft it was about 45*F and cold windy. So YEAH THEY ARE STILL OUT! I get lax and stop looking for them when its not hot out but I just got re-educated. this lil guy was about a foot long with one bead of a rattle that he shook but it made NO noise. Good thing we spotted him first. Be safe out there and keep your eyes open. Watch out for those puppies too.

Well I decided that my question for you all about the Swarovski 25-50Wide Angle eyepiece would best be answered if I just got one and made a comparison for myself. This week I did Just that! I recently bought the 20-60x eye piece from Doug at cameralandny.com, First off their customer service is TOP NOTCH! I have made other purchases through them and now dealing with this eye piece they are helpful, knowledgeable and very efficient. Well in my own ignorance I ordered a different eyepiece than I thought I had looked through before. They sent me the one I ordered (20-60) but when I got it I realized that the one I had fallen in love with was in fact the 25-50x . Well after a quick Phone call to Cameraland the deal was done and they were going to switch me the eyepiece no problems. Five days later I now own the 25-50x wide angle eye piece. IF there is any one out there who is thinking about making this change, IT IS GREAT AND SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE 20-60x!!!! I mean it is immediately noticeable. I set it up tonight in my drive way and looked up at the top of mnt Elden here in Flagstaff at last light and it is incredible how much more light it brings in and how much more FOV you have at both 25x and 50x. This weekend my goal is to get out and take some pics though it so I will let you all know how well that goes ASAP. Good luck to all who have tags coming up. -sam

heck yeah! If you got to go out in the woods with friends and family and see God's beautiful country and you found the buck that you wanted to shoot..... then that is as trophy as they get. you'll probably be hooked on Coues deer for ever now! Congrats on a great buck. And welcome to the Forum -sam

I love this map. I cant wait until they have the whole state finished. I've known Jimmy for a long time, and even he will tell you his map aint perfect but its darn close. If you get one of these maps for 6A or get one in the future for other units and have suggestions or have input on map updates I know he will be glad to listen to you and use your comments to get you a better product. -sam

+1 +2 Here is a link that I was sent via email with a video the NRA put out. if you haven't seen it it basically says the same thing as EBB's post. ! also, the very large green banner at the top of the page you are reading also sends a message that other people support the vote on 109

glad some one else caught this. I laughed to my self when I read it. even though I knew what you were getting at. -
I only shot a few times off of a claw. seem to work good. Here are a few links that other people have been working on. I made one similar to this a few years ago and it works great. looks like it worked great for "SOIHUNT" too, http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...showtopic=21525 I have also used the same V-notch that he used and just screwed it to a adapter plate for my tripod head. and here is a pretty good discussion about the outdoorsmans rifle rest system. I haven't used this one but it looks slick and it has good reviews so far. http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...showtopic=20807 if I can offer any good advice, it seemed to help me a lot if I used a pretty sturdy tripod like my Bogen 190 and not my light weight SLIK sprint pro. (I have had good luck shooting off both the bogen fluid head and the Outdoorsmans pan head if its on the bigger tripod) hope this helps. good luck. -sam

Good shootin at two Great bucks. Congrats to you and your family.

JLG- thanks. I'm not sure what my schedule is gonna be like this weekend but I might try to take you up on that. I have used the 20x60 a lot but never even touched the 25-50 so it would be awesome to do a side by side, especially in lower light. I'll keep in touch I didnt mean to limit this discussion to just these two eye pieces if any of you have input on the 20x the 30x or the 45x with respect to the others please feel free to pitch in your 2cents. thanks, sam

after reading the Hail stories around the valley yesterday I realize that we were not the only ones dealing with CRAZY weather. I live in Bellemont and If you live in bellemont you probably live in one of two types of houses, ones that a huge tornado drover directly over yesterday or ya live in one that the tornado drove right by! its not a big place. I live with my budy who owns our house. and needless to say we dont live there any more. our house was one of 33 deemed un livable by the health dept. out of those 33 homes, I feel lucky to say that we have alot of wet stuff, a few large skylights where we didnt used to and our garage is more of a car port. and we have permanently open widows. the house across the street how ever is missing the top story and our next door neighbor has a boat mis-parked in his attic. most cars sustained broken windows. (except one of mine see the pictures. ) and we now all have joined back yards cause the fences are all some where up by the grand canyon. Room mates girl friend got banged up and spent the day in the hospital but she was let go with just alot of bump bruises an scrapes. No one else we talked to had any serious injuries. It was an amazing blessing that every one was alive after this. God is Great! Oddly enough out of all the damage we have 11 mounts in our house and not one was wet or fell off the wall! If you need any parts for your camp trailer you can make a great game of "go find the parts in the forest between I-40 and Pumpkin Center! Camping world lost most of their inventory. If any one ever tells you that Tornados dont go through forests or through the mountains, tell them to drive up to Wing mountain and look at the new clear cut 200yrds wide and 20 miles long. here are just a few pics off my phone. there are alot better ones on the internet if ya do a search. Hope any one else out there fared as well as we did and if there are fellow CWT.comers who live in the area who need any thing please stop by our place. its the one it pictures. cheers sam Ps. thats my car that as in the back yard, it made a trip around the neighbors fence, though our fence and is now in the front, only damage is the soft top is missing.

Thanks again to you and your brother for helping making this all happen. you have no Idea how much it meant to him. He doesn't mind the pics posted here cause CWT.com is what found it for him! This was a bizarre and wild story on this bull getting found (6 miles from where it was shot) and a few really honest folks (including a stand up wildlife manager) and a guy who has never touched a computer before all came together to get this awesome bull to its rightful owner! thanks. sam

HOLY PALMATION! that is a sweet horn. keep up the good work. I think you should get extra cudos for that 'lil guy! you really had to be on your game to spot that thing! I mean I have found arrow heads that were bigger -sam

Im sure some one here will PM (personal message) you and give you some pointers on unit 10, there are tons of elk there. good luck. -sam

that is un- real! Wonder what it is that's on the masonry that they are after? salt deposits? some exotic moss that tastes really good if your a sheep? I'm trying to remember cause I havent been there (Cody ,WY) since I was a kid but I didn't remember the dam being masonry, I thought it was a regular 'ol concrete arch dam? maybe those are some kinda foreign anti-gravity-dam-scaling sheep in Tibet? Anyways great pics. thanks for posting. -sam
