"After seeing the size of the hole it left in the poor little deer " The size of the hole will depend largely on the bullet used and not the caliber of the rifle. I shot my first coues at 217 yards with a .243 using a 90gr. nosler ballistic tip and the exit whole was bigger than my fist. My dad has shot a coues at 200 yds with a 7mm and a 130gr. ballistic tip resulting in a large exit hole. I have shot deer and elk now at 450 plus yards with a 300 ultra mag using a 165 gr. swift scirocco with no large exit wounds. However, just a week or so ago I shot a coues at 450 yds with the 300 ultra mag 165 gr scirocco and the entrance hole was massive (he was quarting away). Anyhow, ballistic tip, bonded core, or hollow point bullets are all going to do different damage and different distances wether from a .243 or a 7mm. I am not claiming to know a lot, just what I have observed in my experiences.

On my deer hunt this past week I glassed up a huge bobcat. I first glassed him at about 400yds and he was moving up the ridge away from me, he finally topped over the ridge at 600+ yards. He was cruising pretty quick and wouldn't stop long enough for a good shot. His tracks are all over the ridge, on top and on both sides. I would love to shoot this bobcat, so my question is how to go about it? I am not a huge predator hunter but I have called in coyotes and foxes with just your standard rabbit in distress call (not electronic call). I glassed him in the open on the south east facing slope. Other than where I glassed him the country is very thick and rough. I'm thinking I need to get some kind of vantage point, with good cover for me (brush for my back drop), where I can see the close range thick stuff and also be able to see further to maybe catch him coming in before he gets close? Again, I don't have an electronic caller, and I am just asking so forgive my ignorance. I know wind is always a factor as well. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks guys in advance.

thanks for the advice Josh, I've been thinking about getting an electronic caller maybe now is the time to bite the bullet.

thanks guys. I don't know when I am going to be able to get back out there but I'm not worried about him. He is in a spot with no road access and a little hike in. I will let you all know how it goes.

I am posting this for my 15 year old brother. Him and another of my brothers drew the unit 22 tag for october, and my dad went along to help them out. They glassed up some does and a muley buck on opening morning, with no WT bucks spotted. They moved to a different vantage point on saturday morning and at 7:40 am my dad glassed up this buck at 800 yds. He was in really thick cover and right up against a sheer rock face. My dad and younger brother took off to get closer to him. They spotted him bedded and ranged him @ 228 yards. He was behind a rock and my brother didn't have a shot so they needed to wait for him to get up. By the time they had stalked within range and relocated the buck it was almost 10:00. My brother got in a prone position and got ready for the shot. After about 10 minutes the buck decided to stand and stretch...my brother was ready and laid the hammer down on him. The buck is very symetrical and scores 102 3/8". Clay at Mogollon Taxidermy will be doing the mount for my brother. On a side note I had the 24B tag and hunted friday-tuesday. We were after some good bucks that we had scouted but we couldn't find them. I shot a spike tues. morning (the last day that i could hunt) @ 450 yards. here are the pics of my brother with his buck, enjoy:

Aweome bucks! Thanks for all the pics and sharing your success with us all.

thanks for all the replies guys, my brother is still in shock for sure, I know he looks bigger than 102 but we measured him twice and came up with the same thing both times...

that is one heck of a buck!

the phone does work fine as a modem, however, doing so is not included in your monthly data/internet fee, they charge you seperately for that, so be careful.
-
Maybe about 100 to 102. Good luck on your hunt. awesome! thats what my dad and I came up with! good luck to you too going after that buck.

i have verizon and i have a blackberry so that changes things a bit. When you buy a blackberry with verizon they require you to have the data plan which gives me internet (extra $30/month). So i have the net on my phone. I like it, i get all my emails for work, etc. I have been on this site on my phone but not very often, I have never tried getting on the forums on my phone. Hope that info helps. I do use a cool internet radio application that lets me listen to all kinds of music from an internet radio site on my phone. is it friday yet??

hey what do you all think that wide buck will score. My dad and I were just talking about it, i was wondering what everyone thought??

John, Bummer that you didn't tag out, but glad you had a good time and saw some deer! I am heading out tonigt after work with my brother for our hunt and I am pumped! Hope the day doesn't drag... Thanks for the update! -
thx for posting the pics! We have a nice tall buck and a wide buck with a look like that one scouted out for friday morning. Hopefully my brother and I can pull another double like last year! I wish it was friday already!!

I lay prone, using a bipod on the front of my rifle and my pack under the butt. I get rock steady and squeeze it off. I haven't been in a situation yet where I couldn't get steady using this method. Long distance for me is anything over 400 yds.

Between my brother,my dad and I we have scouted out quite a few bucks with some being over the 100" mark. We have also scouted a few areas that yielded nothing more than does and spikes. We are pretty pumped for our "plan a" spot, I will keep you all updated if we have any luck next weekend.
