Mearns Opener - any reports?
gthudspeth replied to scoutm's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I hunted six areas in the San Rafael Valley/Canelo Hills and have not turned one covey, all these areas produced from 2-4 coveys during the past 3 seasons. My Brit's already know I suck at shooting, now their seriously questioning my ability to get them into birds; can't say I blame them with the dismal results so far. Gene -
New Dog
gthudspeth replied to AZcoyotehunter's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I have four Brit's and they make a excellent pointer/retriever and family dog. All my dogs have been trained to hunt within my prescribed limits, 30-60 yards in front of me and coursing 30-40 Yards to the side, it takes some work but these dogs catch on quick. I have also hunted over GSP's, French Brit's and a Weimeraner (spelling) and they were all very good, and their owner's were every bit attached to them as I am to my Brit's. Once you have socialized the dog to you, where willful compliance is achieved, training goes much easier. Good Luck, Gene -
bird dog problem
gthudspeth replied to cw4192's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
IMO, there should never be a shot around a pointer that doesn't have a bird in it. When I gun break a dog I will tether a BW or pigeon, and restrain the dog (Check cord) with the bird flapping in front of the dog, but dog just can't quite get it. Meanwhile I have another person shoot about 50 yards out and observe the dog, if it stays focused on the bird we move it in 10 Yards at a time, for me, this is a process I do not rush. I just got through getting a rescue Brit from being gun scared, to at least gun tolerant, it was a slow Arduous process. Starting with a training blank, repeating with a shotgun only after I could shoot the blank gun on a just released bird and the dog did not take her attention off the bird during the shot. Knine also has a lot of good info on gun breaking, hopefully she will chime in. Good Luck, Gene -
