I disagree, The biggest wild elk on the planet live in arizona I believe it's called the Moggollon Rim and the White mountain range. USA!!! USA!!! USA!!! Ever see the Shipsey Bull? And I'm 99.9% sure if someone finds an elk head here in AZ They'll know what the heck it is. I guess you could have allota fun thinkin it could be a Mammoth or somethin However,I have seen many and own some deer sheds and heads you could have a hard time guessin. Concerning Mule, whitetail, blacktail and coues. Of course there are many subspecies therein. But in a nutshell those big 4 standout to me. Here lies this topic............ All spec without a DNA test my friends.

I believe that Arizonas' number 2 typical was taken in 1995 a 143in. killed by Larry Johnson and now owned by Allen Ellsworth. It was Taken in Navajo county. Like I said, it's possible. Heres my first buck, Without those elephant ears you'd bet it was a B&C coues rack wouldn't you Once again if you trully think it's coues you'll need a DNA test
-
Hmmmm..... If that's a coues then it's worth allot more than 6 g's. If that's a coues then u need it officially scored and put in the books under youre family's name. If that's a coues then I wouldn't sell it. If that's a coues then Holly crap!!!! If that's a coues then u need DNA testing to proove it. I'm not saying it's impossible.. But u need proof. If someone finds a 480 elk head there is no guessing the species. see where i'm going? Untill you do these things it's nothin more than a Big Muley.....

His palls are all big boys too The search goes on.............................................................................. ................................................................................. ................................................................................. ................................................................................. ................................................................................. ................................................................................. ............................... Love the sarcasm Coosefan!,Really I'm glad your not " one of those guys". "Those guys", put our right to shed hunt and enjoy our land in Jeopardy. I'm a serious horn Hunter and am very passionate to say the least about this subject. Hope you understand. Up here in Show Low the AZGFD allready play "warning adds" on local radio stations, concerning Illegal and Un-ethical rideing directly related to shed hunting. If " those guys" keep it up, well I'll Hope to draw a shed hunting tag or get a first come first serve permit, And hope i find that big-one while" in season", Hope I can beet the other thousand people lined up waiting for the warden to open the gate too! These Nightmares are allready real life in other states. No Sarcasm. I fear theres no stopping , "those guys" and the effect they will have on ALL OF OUR rights. Wish more would realize this and have the Spine to reverse this process before it's too late, not likely. It's simply easier to do the wrong thing, just twist the throttle and tell yourself you're not an a-hole and this is how you "connect with nature", i guess-still don't know what goes through their minds on those things??? My dignity however remains in tact while i wear the soles off my boots. I Use an old invention called a pack frame.I am getting older however and will use my horse more in future 2 though- no winch needed. Hope you enjoy the return sarcasm. Youre sarcasm is sadly how " Those Guys " actually think though. Hope to take out my pack for a long haul this weekend! Blood, Sweat and Antlers Baby! GO get umm before it's illegal ya know. Hope to bring out a pile o horns, but Knowing I'll pack out my pride and my garbage. Srry if i get serious on this one a little. Shed hunting is a big, big,& positive influence on my life, don't know where i'd be without it. We'll probly mess that up for the future gen. though If not the latter part of my life 2. All this aside looks like a fun trip u had Coosefan, Any time u get a fish and a horn in a trip well hey, That's cause for celebration bro! Can't say I've done that one yet.

Rattlesnakes remind me of landmines for somereason.Guess they have allot in common, stepping on either can be the end of it. Make nice belts though Stepped on 4 to date and had many other close encounters, my dog also. Been very lucky so far, no conecting strikes. A high school friend I had allmost lost his arm to one while hikeing. He was 12 when it happened. Just a little timber rattler- yet as dangerous as a high speed auto crash There is allways a snake bite kit in my pack. And snake gun! To date one rattler i encountered was non-aggressive, I let that one go. Probly will let more go in the future.I have enough snake hides for one person. Also gonna buy snake chaps. I have a strong respect and must admitt fear for these critters. These creatures will remain missunderstood. I still don't understand them.

heck of a first shed That was a good day cousin.

Hope you guys stayed on the road with the golf cart. nice horn. I've had many trips that I only found one, sweatin' bullets all day. It makes those days when you find a pile that much more special!

Cool! and I'm glad to see future Antler addicts in the makeing.

Just throwing something in the wind to get everyone hyped for hunting, and maybe get that one tip that will have one of my arrows in a coues buck. I have 2 great backcountry places picked out, nice country loaded with sign year round and have found a few 100class sheds and a few nice heads from here. also plenty of mulie sign, heads and sheds. never can get close to them. very discourageing when bowhunting no doubt. This year i plan to implement a salt lick next to an earth tank in a saddle. Stand or blind for coues bucks? Does rattleing work on coues bucks? Does that C'mere Deer stuff work? I'm getting serious this bowseason instead of tromping around hopeing to get lucky. I only get those bow shot opportunities when it's not bow season it seems Just any hints that may have helped some of you guys harvest a coues with a bow is greatly appreciated. I'm also a bit hyper-active and have trouble sitting " on stand for longer than 3 hours. Any cures for this?

Wolf country: Ranchers fighting comeback of a predator
AZantlerhead replied to mxslaugh's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
My 2 cents. A good wolf is a dead one. They are of zero benefit to our ecosystem. They are of great harm . Plus, Why should children have to wait in "cages" for the Bus ? Don't we have enough dangerous animals as it is? They look nice on the nature films in Alaska, that's all they do for me. We killed umm all for a reason. I don't think the re-introduction was fully thought out, that's for sure. -
good one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm glad to live in a time when these things are shared and treasured. Lion hunt? Does anyone know the lion population in AZ? And how many lions are taken every year?
-
right on! that theres a trophy coues 4 sure nice find, not even crittered up, exept for the lion who chewed on his neck That's as good as a kill allmost . hang it and be proud. ohh and measure it. I'd give it 95 in , min.

Early season archery coues tips?
AZantlerhead replied to AZantlerhead's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Thanks, I'll try the blind. Deffinately can't sit motionless I do like to read books, so that would help allot! Have a few good ones on standard whitetails, maybe i'll pick up Duwayne Adams' new one on coues just for the blind and Louis L'Amour is a must Guess I'll just have to work with the ratteling, calling, C'mere deer and experiment. It's gotta work sometimes or people woudn't do it i guess. -
According to my father wo is doing QC work there with Mactec engineering, it will be closed another 2 months expectedly. The forest service wants to open it but they cant. Currently there is an agreement to keep it closed till July 1st at least. Completion however may take longer. But what if you have a key to the gates like my dad?

Animals ATTACK!!!! and meeting in Silver City.
AZantlerhead replied to jamaro's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
Yes, far fetched. Why i didn't call.Decided if i got pulled over i'd just tell the truth and take it to the dang judge if i had too. However, TRUE.On my blood! No , the pigs didn't have rabies. My dog took a good one to his hind leg and his face, he's heeled good with just a couple new scars. He's a colby American Pitbull Terrier, He was holding his own considering. But two of these guys, he was in a loosing battle. These pigs matched him in weight, over 55lbs- heads twice the size of my dogs and 2.5 inch tusks. Not to mention the fact their as wild as a texas tornado! Never- Never should these pigs be taken lightly!!!!!!!Their closest relative in the geen pool is the Russian boar-fact. Their just little versions. I always wondered what would happen if we ever encountered some pigs, me and my dog. It's NOT a good thing. Yes, found a six point elk- 3 point muley shed that day One ran Off, The other is in my belly and friends freezer . scores 14.5 in. One to drop him , 2 to finish. In your face Adrenaline of the snorting kind. I'm now considering a southern style hog hunt with dog packs down south, I hear their affordable and now know they'd be action packed. My dog is old and he's about ready to retire . He's only got half his fangs left! He's been porcupined twice, fought numerous coyotes and stray dogs comeing in the yard sometimes in packs, caught countless rabbits. Found and stoodoff, on 3 seperateoccasions, rattlesnakes on the trail in front of me without getting struck. Kept me safe and warm while I sleep in the backwoods. heck, he even got a coon one time. That was wild 2! None of the real coonhounds i had ever did. Also too boot has never shone a single hair of aggression to anyone! If anyone actually read the history of the American Pitbull terrier , They would know that It was made a point to eleminate any dog from the geen pool who bit a handler or owner dureing a "Pit Match" They were actually bred not to bite people!!!!!!! only other animals. Some owners have nowadays trained their animal otherwise. Yes, I'm highly against dog-fighting as well as Trained "attack"dogs. However I would like to see more People use them in the field. Their nose is top- notch, They have killer instinct towards other critters, will keep going up and down mountains for longer than u can, their loyalty to owners is un-matched, they are usually highly intelligent, and have the mental "gameness" factor, or drive from within. Not to mention the courage of a lion. Also protective of owners and territory. They trully are the American Dog . So sad they are missused, mistreated, and misstrained Ohh and as for numbers, labrador retrievers' actually bite the most people in the u.s every year. And children should never be left alone or be un-supervised around any dog or dangerous animal, duh! Stupid owners, and parents, likely both. everyone knows most dogs don't like little kids, duh. And a dog who's aggressive to people and isn't in our armed forces should be terminated, end of story. I would not wish this experience on anyone or anyones pet. But wait untill the grandkids hear! ha! Also gonna carry a bigger "snake gun" from now on, just for them critters who wanna get crazy! I'm the king of the forest dammit! Ohh Ive also had a standoff with a lion, a large boar cinnamon black bear, was attacked by a wild Tom turkey when I was ten, stepped on 4 rattlesnakes in my life and taken numerous spills down hillsides. It's all part of the adventure! Yet my worst injury's were on bicycles, skateboards and dirtbikes. -
Animals ATTACK!!!! and meeting in Silver City.
AZantlerhead replied to jamaro's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
A couple weeks ago i was out with my dog near luna. We weren't walking ten minutes when out of no where 2 Javelina were running full out, right to us! . my dog being the dog he is met them half way and the 2 rageing pigs and my brave dog were going at it bad fearing for my dogs life i ran at the rageing pile shouting. Would you believe it. The larger of the pigs charged me!!!! with no tree and no weapon on my side all i could think to do was kick this crazy boar as he came in.Out of sheer luck and a little instinct I connected, luckily without looseing a calf musle. A counter attack from me sent this pig back on my dog with his teammate. If he knocked me down instead of me knocking him down would I be writeing this now?I wonder. Man, i was in shock. The pigs chased my dog and piled up, my dog chased them then piled up. Soon my dog would be dead, trying to call him off was useless. I slung my pack off and got out my snub nose 22, my trusty snake gun. At this point i was getting as mad as both the pigs and my dog. That gosh darn boar allmost got me! Now they were gonna kill my best dog I ever owned? I think not . The rest of this story I will leave out, KNOWING I did the right thing. I've never encountered aggressive javelina till this day, but their out there. I still have my dog, and my leg. What would you do? -

Ive now mounted 4 big sets of elk sheds. I've seen numerous kits but have found the means to do it yourself. This takes some time, a little patience a couple tools, a welder and a love of horns. please see elk-mounts.com for similar style shed mounts, their prices are too high but this will give you some visual ref. Also i'll get my dang pics together of my completed shed mounts. Heres my process i hope all appreciate it . This style mount will last forever and is rock solid when done right. Great looking and surely does a nice set justice when their up on the wall. I currently have a smaller "345" set in a local shop, it's retailing $600. the bigger ones are on my wall of course. Enjoy and get them sets hung! The"kit" mentioned above might work, dunno , never tried umm. This is a true custom mount. #1-- Find a peice of number 4-5 rebar . cut two dowels of equal length from this, I use 6-in pieces for elk mounts. #2-- Grind evenly half way down your dowels to remove most of the "threads" , leave some to give extra grip when inserted in antler. #3-- Find two drill bits, the first to drill a pilot hole in base of antler, the second should be equal in diameter to your dowels for a tight fit, the bigger will follow your pilot hole. Mark drill bits to 1/2-in more than half of youre dowells. If the dowel will be inserted 3-in, drill a 3.5-in hole. #4-- This part is nervewracking but must be done. Drill your pilot holes, Drill your final holes. make sure to check as you go as not to drill out the side of antler! Angle of hole should follow center of beam and enter center of button. Don't fret to much about the angle however. that is adjusted upon final steps. The important thing is to have a tight fit. #5-- You'll need some good epoxy, i recommend "ace-brand" in the black and white tubes. Cheap and strong! Mix apoxy, apply to half of dowell that will go in antlers. Now, You should need a hammer to pound the dowels in, otherwise use allot of apoxy if dowels fit loosely, tighter is better, but not to tight! The apoxy is just insurance when the pieces fit tight. Let set for about 10 hours or overnight. #6-- Now you have both antlers with matching dowels pokeing out of them. they sould be very solid and be protrudeing from antlers in equal length, if not grind the longer down to match. #7-- Find a steel plate desirable in size and shape of your likeing. this will be your"plaque, shield". this piece should be 1/4 thick for rigidness. Mark youre shield for center, this will be where you weld the dowels on the plate. Now is also a good time to drill holes in your shield for wall hanging. Two vertical holes and two side holes. haveing more holes allows for better alignment when hanging. #8--Get yourself a big, flat, level surface to work on. A shop table is best but the right peice of ground works too. lay youre mounting plate"shield" on a piece of 2x8 to keep it flat while allowing room to hook your ground on it. lay you're antlers out with center of dowells laying on the center you have marked on shield. Patience!!! Take your'e time here. youll need blocks or bricks or whatever to prop the horns up, Measure and set desired spread.also width between buttons. Caution ---make shure tips are 4+ in higher off working surface then shield. I put to bricks under tips of main beams . this seems to give clearance from wall when hanging. This step takes an eye for what you want and how the horns flow. I use a 40-in spread on all my elk shed mounts.i alter pedicle width though. Take your'e time and get them where you want them. #9-- have a friend hold the antlers or vice versa and tack-weld the dowles to the plaque, be carefull not to move the horns from desired places. This is why you just tack them on. once youre sure you have umm how you want and are shure it will sit on wall properly weld those puppies on real good #10-- you now have a rigid frame shed mount that is like a rock. Dress it up with a plaster skull cap, paper mashea, leather or whatever. I myself leave them like this so everyone knows their sheds. just a little primer spraypaint to dress up the steal and a little grinding or whatever. Your sheds are now ready for a lifetime of viewing enjoyement. I should be chargeing for this knowledge. ha! Attempt at you're own risk!!!!!!!!!!! Some knowledge of tools, and craftwork required. If your really not confident get help or hire a pro!
