Waiting till Jan as well . Hope to get a nice buck out of a particular shed honey hole this year. 27 is finally open for late archery this year. Haven't hunted there in 10 years for late archery, I can't wait. I kinda know what i'm doing now Should they be back out of the rut in their normal routine by then? Basically, you think they'll be living back where they drop they're sheds ? Weve pulled out about 50 coues and muley sheds from this spot in 4 years. bout 6 sheddin trips. So i'm really pumped about this spot. Any advice on their Jan habits here in az? All the advice on t.v and the mags is about darn iowa or sasketchewan ya-know.

What makes a successful hunt for ..... YOU?
AZantlerhead replied to WinMag's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I think a succesfull hunt are day's spent in the woods where if you had to kill something to survive you could have. I.E. = getting on game. bottom line. To kill what you're lookin for, now that's the trophy, no matter the size. And who said you can have a bad time hunting. even in bad weather with a sprained ankle, beats work and I personaly like big antlers, Who doesn't? -
OMG , what an absolute Hog, congratulations!!!

Allright man!!!!!!! That's a toad of a buck. Congrats! -
It seems most people who live in other states and even seasoned vetrans in this state are in the dark when it comes too the "Coues Whitetail Deer"!!!!Seriously, here in Show Low most hunters have never seen a coues, and maybe not even heard of them in some cases. Others are thoroughly confused as too the lack of actuall "Coues" referance by the fish and game in regulations and on tags . Yes it's true, some hunters here in this great state think we simply have small, and genetically inferior Eastern whitetails . Seriouslly!!!! no BS. My father "arranged" for my uncle from Sacramento to Draw a tag with him in 31 for mulie. When he arrived and saw my coues in the tree He was intrigued, confused and interested in the small bodied deer that resembled a whitetail version of the columbia blacktails they have in Cali where he's from. Also he needed a lesson on the caliber of buck I had got {Borderline Booner} . So I guess what I'm getting at is this little deer were all Nuttso about is actually little known throughout the vast hunting community and were doing a fine job on this site of raising awareness of the Coues. So bring you're family too Coues country and Coueswhitetail.com .

On the last day of my 31 WT hunt my Uncle, Grandma, and cousin joined us all the way from Sacramento. The special occasion being my 46 year old uncles first Official deer hunt. He Applied with my Dad for the early MD hunt, and waddya know, 1st year drawn, first dear hunt, buck, and Super nice buck too boot. He was allready pumped upon arrival seeing a buck in the tree(my big ol' Wt) plus i'm sure a couple months of restless nights thinking about a freezer fulla Mullie venison. . He came fully prepared gear wise, and also did allot of walking over the summer to maybe make it easier on himself. He knew he'd be hunting with my father who untill just the past 3 years i'd say was able to walk me in the ground! And I'm 26 So on with the story...... I helped them scout the Mullies the next 2 day's of they're hunt. We saw deer but no shot's were fired. Then I had to return to work for a couple day's But I needed to get my meat and cape of the dry ice and in the freezer anyway. They kept at it reportably getting up an extra 1/2 hour earlier than usuall, this means 3:30 a.m. Usuall being 4 a.m . I guess my uncle was feeling the pressure. So anyway on the 6'th day of the hunt My dad calls me and say's " man I just missed a big one and i'm pissed" I told him It happens As he would've told me. Not 2 hours later he called me back and said" you know that buck I missed?" " he wen't up the mountain to wear uncle Micheal was and he got him!!!" The dissapointment and be-wilderment my dad felt after missing was now replaced by excitement, happiness and pride in his youngest brother getting his first buck. And that sort of " happens for a reason" mentality as well. It was a deer season too remember.......My uncles a great man, worked hard and waited a long time for this Buck, congradulations uncle micheal!!!

Well, Buddy, I nailed my 117 buck in unit 31 two weeks ago and if you read Arizona wildlife trophies you'll see a sick amount of trophy coues from the region. {grahm and pima counties} . If those kinda things don't excite you than I got lucky with this first buck no doubt but i also put in a week of HARD hunting, this guy was my reward. But i woulda shot a spike just the same , and been just as happy.

As he lay Buck PicsMe and my first Coues , I can't explain all that i feel about this buck, but I'm very thankfull, I can tell you that! [att a chment=10793:1st_coues_5_001.jpg] I could write a novel on the story but i'll try too sum it up quick. I saw 10-20 does every day the first 3 days, wakeing up at 4 and back to camp in the dark. But no bucks, i was thinking cause all the shooting , people, camps, quads, roads, etc...... I then found a shed in the wash behind camp , noticed the big buck pelllets close by and follwed the big set of tracks in the wash 2 miles to a hidden spring, the big buck sign there kept me hunting around it for the rest of my hunt. Then on the last morning My scouting to find the core home range of the big ones in the area payed off. I was pirched on a boulder glassing and allready thinking about what i'll do better or different next year. I heard the brush crash and focused in on the sound, there, 200 yds away was 2 big coues bucks makeing scrapes. I slink - ied it down to the next rock so i could get a better rest. I found the bucks vitals in the scope , breathed out and fired. the bucks jumped but didn,t run, also a 3rd unseen buck was now there. I fired on the big one again. two ran this way, my buck the other. I took a few minutes to go over the last longest 15 seconds of my life and went to investigate. I found the scrape where i'd shot the buck, no blood, no nothing. I walked circles made a beee line here and there on the deer trails, but nothing. I went back to my pack at the scrape and sat down. Then I looked up at where i shot from and ahhh- haa. This was not where the buck was standing when shot! I walked 50 yds on the rim of the wash and found a similar scrape, only this one had a spot of blood in it. Drop , drop , splash , splash , gushhhhh gushhh, dead buck 30 ft. I could not believe it. And cannot explain it. But i'm going back for more. Hope you enjoy my pics and story. I am still in shock quite frankly. I'm not an expert but My ruff core was 110 gross. give or take an inch. I'm a coues head for life now! Ohhh and praying for deer on the last morning may do some good
