Daughter's first ever bow hunt
Bird Dog replied to Coues&Coyotes's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
That was one of the funnest experiences I have ever witnessed! Thanks for letting me be a part of your hunt. I hope I can have the poise this young lady had on my next hunt to wait and let it all happen. Then to make the shot. Nice piggie! -
I guess it was just my turn.....
Bird Dog replied to GRONG's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Sorry to hear this. If it isn't one thing it is another at times. Also, sad to say check out page 11 of the new Elk/Antelope regs with the elk clinic informations that discusses the use of setting cameras and attractants. Nice of G&F to promote this activity to everyone. -
opinoins on the .300 WSM?
Bird Dog replied to jeepers creepers's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I agree! Well put! Also, simple physics over a 300 win mag is that you can not get the same volocity with less powder. Kind of like a V6 verses the V8 engine in a truck. I am not saying the WSM is not a good modern combination that utilizing a good combination of case capacity, action to cartridge fit, and filling a nitch (minus feeding problems). The 300 win. mag has issues fitting into a long action and seating a bullet at the optimum location and still fitting in the magazine and from what I have heard the WSM is better with that in mind which gives good accuracy. I personally bought a 300 win mag because of this in a single shot. Now I can fit the bullet right out to the lands and not give up case capacity.......which means spppppeeeeeeeeddd! Not to say the WSM would not be fun, effective at taking down animals, and new! It is basically a 300 H&H in a new wrapper!!!!!!!!!! -
Congrats to you Grong and little bear for making it happen with good friends and a great time.

Thought Galiuro Man and Josh would like this picture! This dog took over 20min. to come in but I had no problem letting the air out of this one. This is #2 for the year, first dog or the colt.

This ever happend to you?
Bird Dog replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
So much can be said about score but it is only a number. I say a guess is a guess and only a tape shows true numbers when done right so don't worry about the score but rather if it looks right. When a buck is big enough the score doesn't matter. After the hunt you probably will remember how good a particular deer looked/looks and the score doesn't matter it is just icing on the cake. In my opinion it is what feels and looks right at the time. Kind of like the first deer you ever were able to take. -
Agree! I just got my hands on one myself for one of the best seasons of the year! Ah, something about the song dog coming to the rabbit choke hold. Here is a pic of a friend from a couple weekends ago. #1 for the year!

Great points Josh, I have to agree. It seems we are luck to even have deer left with the current weather, grazing, and human expansion. Memeber the days of 2400 unit 8 deer permits. Now we have seemed to switch to leaning very heavy on the Whitetail populations to keep G&F in business. Lucky for us the does are so prolific and the southeastern part of the state has had a little better winters. I hope we don't over utilize the little deer!

hi Bird Dog,,, i have heard of a ruger no #1. what is a 1V. do you think it would be to heavy for a youth ?? my 3 sons. A 1-V is the varmit barrel with a target crown on a 24" barrel. It is not any/much heavier than a standard rifle but it is certainly no "youth" model. Lighter is not always better when shooting but packing could weigh a kid down or better yet keep them slowed up for their dad. Also, the heavier a rifle the less felt recoil no matter the cartridge. This 6mm is very pleasant to shoot and is what I started my wife last year on before elk. She did great. The trigger pull I believe is <13" "and has fit me well. I am not very tall 5'7"and average arm lenght. I personally have grown to love the Ruger no.1 because it is a single shot and extremely strong actioned fpr hand loading. Also, because it is a single shot it has slowed me down to make a better shot with a "single" shot. I grew up shooting bolt actions, but matured with a single shot! Although I say this I can make the old 6mm sing when needed and get off nearly as many shots at running coyotes as someone with a bolt. Another benefit I see is you get a shorter rifle over all with a longer barrel because the action length is shortened being a falling block. Here is a picture I was thinking of posting if you can see it. I do think it is easier to tell on a single shot when it is not loaded even though "a gun is always laoded" because there are less bullets involved. I have also heard that the Savage rifles are good shooters especially for the price. I hope this helps and I surely would love for this rifle to go to a family if possible.

I have a Ruger No.1V 6mm I was thinking about posting hoping someone would like it for a kid. It has a 3-9 Leupold VXII. It is in good shape if your interested send me a pm. I have taken many coyotes and a couple coues with it. It will shoot 85gr. speer at 3250+ and shoots good under 1".
