I am considering driving down from Colorado and picking up a 36 B leftover tag. I was wondering if you guys could give me some safety tips as far as dealing with drug runners and UDI. I apologize if there is a big post on the subject but I have looked and found nothing major. I know the suthern part of the unit is closed because of problems. It would be at least me and my dad I was thinking of bringing 2 hounds to tie at camp to wake us up if some thing fishy was going on at night. What else do you do. Camp with other hunters. Camp low in the deseert and drive up higher in the dark. If I hunt 10 or 15 miles north of the border would that make the hunt much safer. Or does a guy need to hunt further north to get the odds safer? To this Coloradin the northern half of the unit seems safer but maybe the deer are further south? I typiccly hunt away from roads and walk a lot and glass a lot.But it seems to me that drug runners would also stay away from roads and we would be more likely to have a run in, in remote country. When problems happen is it stuff getting stolen from camps, deer spooking or what? I would appreciate any help it's hard to know how unsafe it is down there from 13 hours away. It's kind of like driving through a big unfamilar city you try to stay in good parts of town but you only know when your in bad parts of town when you are already there! Me and my day have quail hunted Arizona a lot my dad went to high school in San Manuel, but we have never hunted coues. I have researched this hunt for probably 4 years and this is the year. We might bow hunt them in the rut and hunt away from the border. The gun hunt sounds fun though. Thanks Gabe

southern Az units safety questions?
300 ultra mag replied to 300 ultra mag's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Thanks for the replies, I have done a better search of the site using the search feature and have gotten tuns of info and storries about UDA's and drug runners. I would still like as much safety tips as possible though. I would definetly have a pistol on my side. With 800 permits seem like there would be lots of activity between hunters BP and UDA. Is a hunter less likely to have problems hunting north of Ruby road instead of south? The road is pretty close to the border. Thanks again, Gabe -
You should be verrrrrrrrrrrrrrry proud. Teach me all of you'r secrets so i can turn my 2 month old girl into a good hunter.

That buck looks awesome. 2 or 3 years ago I saw a 4x4 mulie in the mid 150s that was off white not totaly albino, I would love to get an arrow in him this fall. I have also seen a doe mule deer that had huge spots looked like a antelope. Nothing black other than bears and slow moving elk .

Good job. The top buck must be a model.

How far from roads do you guys go to CONSISTANTLY find coues deer. In Colorado I usually find the majority of elk 4 to 5 miles and byond from roads. That is with a unlimited rifle state wide bull tag(hevy hunting pressure). I have also seen bulls from the truck . Bucks, howeveer I find close to roads and way out there. How about in arizona I would imagine that the coues bucks chasing does would bring them closer to the roads. Since does are usually un-pressured or stupid and closer to roads. Thanks Gabe Here is a picture as payment for your time, of some bucks from last years clients.

Anybody do any good rattling. How loud and for how long? Do you throw in some grunts and doe bleats? Has anyone ever weghed a boned out buck, incase I would stumble into one in a roadless area? That way every step of the pack out I can say It is only 40lbs, only 40lbs. Ha HA I very grate full for all of the advice, if I can return the favor let me know. I am trying to pay you of with pictures. Gabe Ps here is a picture of me about 8 miles back in a lion den calling bulls for my friend last year.

When is the peak of the rut. If I am able to make, it down there During the peak of the rut and a dark moon. How many deer a day on average should I see? Or let me put it this way say I hunt from daylight to dark and see 10 deer should I stay in the same general area or make my move to a different spot. Thanks Gabe

I am not trying to pressure anyone to give any info they don't want to. I started a week ago on this site with no coues knowledge, and now my knowledge has increased 10 times. Thanks to you guys. -
Out here in Colorado I perty much spot and stalk for deer and bear. For elk I spot and stalk and call. What do most coues bow hunters do spot and stalk or sit on water holes or trails or call? What are some good coues units to hunt in Az. On a average day of bow hunting in the January rut how many coues deer will you see? Thanks again Gabe

If you reload a 22-250 is awsome, the only problem with them is the barrel jumps just enough to not see the p-dog flip through the air. 223 are also fun with no barrel jump and cheaper ammo. Honestly at 200yards I have shot a lot of p -dogs with a 17rem. Hope this helped Gabe -

Thanks for the info it is nice to scout from western colorado. Gabe -
Hi guys I am new to the site and to coues hunting. I was wondering how good of a tag the over the counter bow coues tag is(I am not asking for spots, you work too hard finding them to give them away). Is the hunting pressure pretty high in the south eastern part of Az. I was thinking a combo coues and pig hunt might be fun when all of Colorado big game is over. I have killed a lot of things with a bow but I am sure I need to add coues deer to the list. Thanks a lot , Gabe P.S. If you need info on hunting Colorado I will try to help, feel free to e-mail me
