22 & 23 are great units and have some great bulls, getting drawn is the toughy. This year may be a good year though, G&F put out a few more hunts. I was drawn four years ago for my late bull tag in December, and it was alot of fun, plus i live here in Payson so all i got to do is go a few miles out of town and start glassing. Lately i have put in for archery bull tags on the Rim and towards Heber. 4A 4B 3A&3C, the hunt is in Sept and the rut is in full swing. I tend to camp when ever i am out hunting in units away from home. Gives you the opportunity to listen at night and in early morning before daylight and get a direction on which way to go. I hope you draw some tags and have successful hunts in 2008. -J-

SERIOUS ADDICTION!!! They are the funnest animal to hunt even if you never get a shot, the experience is overwhelming! Welcome and good hunting in '08.

I once watched a coyote take down a baby javy, the coyote jumped up turned and licked it rear end just to get the taste out of its mouth!!!

This is my first coues with a bow. Taken from the pines in 22 close to 23. Never pass a coues with an opportunity to shoot it with a bow, especially your first. Many people go years before they even get the chance. After you get one under the belt, you could be a little more choosey, but I wouldn't. Good Luck in January!

Elk & Antelope Regs are up...
Browning'sCustomMeat replied to 111's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
tough hunts. low country. and i know that that gen hunt in the little colorado is really tough and you may need a blood transfusion afterwards with all the bugs that would eat you. there are some decent bulls there and it would be neat to get one in the velvet. -

DECEMBER,1996, 16 YEARS OLD,MY FIRST COUES HUNT, ALSO A DAY OF FINALS AT SCHOOL! I'M ON MY WAY BACK IN TO TOWN FROM GLASSING THAT MORNING. I STOP AND GLASS AS I WORK MY WAY OUT AND SPOT A BUCK CLOSE TO THE TOP OF A MOUNTIAN, CHASING DOES. ITS 8:30 AND I FIGURED I WOULD HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO POSSIBLY GET A SHOT OFF. WELL I DID, BUT FORGOT ABOUT THE PACK OUT. SO I'M A GOOD 800-1000YDS AND AND 3 RIDGES FROM THE TRUCK. I GET EVERYTHING ON MY PACK AND START ON MY WAY. SEVERAL HOURS LATER I GET TO THE TRUCK, THE DEER NOW WEIGHS ABOUT 500LBS. DO ALL I CAN TO GET IT IN THE BACK OF MY TRUCK. NO HEARS THE KICKER. I GET READY TO LEAVE, TAKE ONE LAST LOOK TO SEE WHERE I SHOT MY BUCK, AND 100YDS FROM WHERE MY BUCK FELL IS A ROAD. REALLY WISH I WOULD HAVE KNOW THAT. -
What would you do? (hunting etiquette)
Browning'sCustomMeat replied to PSEHunter's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
YEAH GINO, IF I COULD GO BACK TO THAT DAY I'M SURE HEATH AND I WOULD HAVE HANDLED IT ALOT DIFFERENT. G&F JUST TALKED TO THE GUY, THERE WAS A FINE LINE BETWEEN ON THE ROAD AND OFF THE ROAD. AND ALL THE G&F DID WAS TALK TO HIM. PRETTY SAD THAT THEY PREACH ALL THIS STUFF TO THE NEXT GENERATION OF HUNTERS AND CANT EVEN FOLLOW THROUGH WITH THEM. MAYBE NO ACTUALL LAW WAS BORKEN, BUT IT WOULD SURE BE NICE IF SOMETHING WAS DONE, PEOPLE LIKE THAT MAKE THESE WOODS VERY DANGEROUS AND SAEFTY IS #1. -

I know its been a while since this topic started. All I have to say is AZ plates "1 shot J" is a piece of work. Antelope hunt in unit 1, Sept. we watch this heard of goats for three days before the hunt. Put them to bed the night before. This "1shotJ" comes in right before dark, very unpleasant, rude man. We asked what his plan in the morning was because we had a buck located. He stated that he'd been watching this buck as well for the last couple of days, which is a crock. because we never left. we sat in a spot and looked everywhere. we had seen other people sure, we didn't crowd them and they didn't crowd us. We got to camp the night before the hunt a decided we would go in at 3:00am and wait for daybreak. 3 pairs pf eyes, spread around this valley. Just before shooting light we find the buck. My friends mother is the one who had the tag. So they start to make their stalk through the cover of dawn getting as close as they could before the sun came up. all of a sudden roar'n over the hill down the road comes big white Ford, "1shotJ". my friend and his mother stop him and say we found him and we're gonna take him. they drove right by around them, with no remorse jumped out, shot, loaded, without even dressing the animal and left the area. They KNEW they were in the WRONG Sure i was pissed, but what upsets me the most is, that it was a kid with the tag that was with "1shotJ". And he is passing along these very poor hunting ethics along to his son or grandson or whoever the boy was. I hope i never run into them again! -
first, congrats to your wife! it has always seemed to me that one with a rifle has the upper-hand on one with a bow. saying you were stalking doesn't make sense since most rifle whitetail tags are filled at 200yds plus. sounds like the ones putting on the stalk were the archers. i had the opportunity to watch a archery hunter stalk a deer while i was out hunting with my late wt tag a few tears ago. there is a lot to be learned by watching other bowhunters. I watched for some time and the hunter closed the gap to about 70yds or so. i thought i was actually going to see this person shoot a coues with a bow. then "BOOM", dead deer. rifle hunters shot the deer and they had no idea that there was a hunter stalking it. the rifle hunters were around the draw from the bowhunter, not a clue. it happens, sorry it happened to you, but best of luck if you go back out.

870 EXPRESS is a true friend. I have beat mine into the dirt and still right on the button. Quail, dove, duck, geese, and turkey, just cant miss'em. Its been in and out of water, used as a ore. Its a great gun for money.

not sure how many people deep fry but its simple and great, I would have never guessed it. Rib-eye and New Yorks are the best....... Marinate in Italian dressing, or your favorite rub for an hour or so..... drop in deep fryer...around 350 degrees. 3min - Rare 5min - Med 7min - Well

Even archery is expensive. There are blades that cost more than $3/ea. Which could put each shot with your bow close to $10 or more.

Everyone has their opinion. I shoot the Buckmaster G2SL and love it. But I also feel comfortable shooting it. Thats important. Its quiet, compact, and fast. Shot my first archery coues with that bow in '04 @ 48yds. Jennings makes a great bow for the buck. But try many out, as many as you can. Be choosing and what fits you is a must. Ask questions, for opinions and advise, it never hurts.

How far from roads? Picture for your time
Browning'sCustomMeat replied to 300 ultra mag's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I agree with everyone. They could be miles in, in the wilderness with no roads and only foot traffic. Or you may see a buck of a lifetime right next to the hwy. The only advise I have is to do the homework. Get out and glass....and glass....and glass.... Glass for hours in an area, and when you think you're done give it another hour. They just pop up! I usually hit the same spot for two days. First day, may not see a thing and the next they are everywhere, but thats the way it goes with these illusive s.o.b.'s! Also, keep record of what you see, wind, temp, time, and where they come out at and direction they are moving. It will all pay off. And watch the does, the rut is coming and them bucks will have their lip curling soon!!! Good Luck!!
