Reminder: Trail cam meeting/webcast tonight at main G&F office
StickFlicker replied to Lv2hnt's topic in The Campfire
These guides on the Strip that run hundreds of cameras have lots of pictures of big bucks that they have watched for years and nobody has ever taken them, or it took years to finally get it. Having pictures of an animal and taking that animal are often far different things, even for a skilled guide. Obviously, the further apart the time/date of the photo is from the time a hunter is trying to get that animal, the lower the chances that the animal will still be in the area. That's one reason there isn't much push-back on the cameras that send the photo. -

Good point ON, and I wouldn't have a problem with that. But if that's the case, they should just say that and not blame their regulations on CWD and fair chase. -
Reminder: Trail cam meeting/webcast tonight at main G&F office

I'm not looking to pit bowhunters against rifle hunters, but anytime that something benefits bowhunters to give them the possibility of increasing their odds from the average 5-6% statewide success on archery deer (baiting, trail cams, etc.) it becomes an issue with Game and Fish. Anytime there are technological improvements to increase the already much higher odds of a kill for firearms hunters, high powered optics and range finders, rifles that shoot 1,500 yards, muzzy's that shoot 300 yards, that's apparently not a problem. I don't think we need anymore government regulations unless it's a blatant problem, which I don't believe this is. -
I think it should require a certain minimum number of points to even be eligible to draw a Once in a Lifetime tag (at least 5, maybe 10) such as bison and sheep.

This is also the meeting where the Commissioners will consider the trail camera issue.

Be thankful for those locked gates. If they let every idiot drive around, your hunt would be a nightmare.

Thanks Dave. I had found them while searching, and they did have great reviews, but apparently they went out of business in the last few months...

The Bowhunting in Arizona Record Book subtracts 2.5% for deer entered in velvet.

Although in this instance it appears, through wb's research, that the person with 24 points did actually draw but did not receive the tag due to a credit card issue, there is another explanation where this type of thing could occur on this report. Just because it states that only one application was submitted with 24 points, this same result could occur if two, three or four people were on that application and their points averaged to 24. There could have been two people with 26 points and two people with 22 points on that application, and it would have been shown on the report exactly this same way; showing that one application was submitted at 24 points. However, if more than one of the applicants was a NR, that would have exceeded the number of permits that could have been issued to NR's in the bonus round and the entire application would have been rejected.

It sounds like wapitibob has figured out the OP's question. However, I would think that they would give that permit to the applicant with the highest number of bonus points, regardless of whether that person is a R or NR. I don't think it matters that the person that originally drew the tag was a NR, since it the bonus round rule is worded "up to" the specific percent. Since the one bonus round permit was never guaranteed to go to a NR, it just did since a NR had the highest number of points, it should go to the next person with the highest number of points regardless of residency status. With regard to TomHarveyB's question, there is one other thing to point-out. While the answer given to you is correct, I wanted to point out that it is completely possible for a person to draw their second choice in the bonus round and then at the end of the drawing there could actually be leftover tags for that hunter's first choice. In other words, it's possible to draw your second choice and G&F could have leftover permits in your first choice unit. While that's pretty unlikely for elk, since there are few leftover tags, it happens all the time in species like javelina and deer that have good numbers of leftover tags. It's also completely possible to draw your second choice and never have even been given the chance to draw your first choice, which is likely what happened in the situation you mention. If your second choice takes fewer bp's to receive a bonus round permit than your first choice, and if you have the number of points needed to be guaranteed your second choice, they don't even consider your first choice.

I've been very fortunate to have drawn both the best mule deer and best desert sheep tag in the past year or so (along with the help of a LOT of bonus points). Since I've now taken a nice ram that I wouldn't likely beat in a low tier sheep hunt, and since I was far more excited taking the big mule deer than taking a big ram, I would choose to have the muley tag again.

Well, it's March. How did you do?!

I use the free iMovie software that comes with Macs. It's great and can do some pretty complex editing, depends how much you want to put into it and learn. I too think that a separate camera, made for video, would be a better choice for quality video than a Go Pro. Unless it's impossible in a given situation, USE a tripod to make your movie watchable and not make your audience motion sick. I like the Canon Vixia cameras for good quality without breaking the bank.

When you changed your APS rate plan to one of their new ones in the last few months, you were automatically entered to win one. I was hoping I'd win one!

Cool buck and story, congratulations! -
Are the chest freezers you are putting them in NON-frost fee (in other words, ice builds-up on the inside and you have to chip it off or defrost it once a year or so)? Or are they frost free like the freezer on your refrigerator?

Congratulations, Ed! That's awesome! Glad to see that Arizona is agreeing with you.

Congratulations on all of your success! Great bucks.

January Coues Rut Predictions Central AZ
StickFlicker replied to AZ_SAWBUCK's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
As Speedy said, the rut is timed based on when the fawns should drop in that area for best chance at survival. While technically they are the same genus, I'm not sure I agree with lumping Coues deer with eastern whitetails as the basis for this comparison. It is true that animals further north do breed earlier (and also normally have larger body weights) as a survival mechanism. Nature times the fawn drop to maximize survival of the deer in the area they live. And it's not just in Arizona, Canadian deer breed well before Arizona deer, and northern Arizona deer breed well before southern Arizona deer and deer in Mexico are the latest. It's also correct that the rut will always be on the same dates in a particular area, every year. Only the activity levels will vary based in part on that year's climatic activity. -
Thanks for the great write-up, and congratulations on taking your ram! What did G&F score him at, and do you know what sized rams the other hunters took? Marvin
-
No, not for leftover tags.

Like CF said, Macs normally come with iMovie on them. It's an excellent video editing software, and at a great price since you already have it!

I saw one Saturday night while leaving Bass Pro Shop Shops that seemed almost that bright, although of shorter duration. Apparently a large meteor shower for a few days.
