IA, Everyone knows the Wolfhole is like kryptonite to a turkey! There's no way a turkey could cross over to the other side of the road....

Great write-up! Thanks for sharing it. I've done that trip 3 or 4 times myself, but not in recent years. It truly is amazing to see the shear number of antelope virtually everywhere in that state.

I think that particular saguaro is in the New Waters! Nice ram, thanks for sharing.

AZ Desert Bighorn Sheep Society hunters' clinic 9/24
StickFlicker replied to bigorange's topic in Bighorn Sheep Hunting
I'll be there! Anyone know if they use name tags or anything so that we can see who else might have drawn in the same unit and touch base? It would be nice if the tags said the unit on name badges of those who drew tags. I attended one, several years ago, just out of curiosity. But I'm anxious to go now that I actually am one of "the chosen ones"! -
It doesn't appear that there ever were many bears on the Kiabab. When Teddy Roosevelt stopped all hunting there in 1907 to make it a preserve, records show that 20 wolves, 500 bobcats, 816 mountain lions and 7,388 coyotes were removed. It makes no mention of bears.

"Incredible buck" is an understatement. Congratulations!

I did put out game cameras on my camp the last time I camped in the very same area, but thankfully my stuff was not bothered.

If you're ever hunting in 13B and get low on gas and decide it would be a lot quicker to take the little road out of the west side of the unit and into Mesquite, Nevada rather than drive all the way back to Utah, just don't do it!! The canyon walls begin to close in on you so there is no way to turn around, then the road starts turning into a river bottom which turns into small waterfalls so you can't backup, which turn into.....just don't do it!

Congratulations! Glad to hear you're going to have him scored. Definitely plan to do it before you mount him. Antelope are very difficult to score once they're mounted, and the chance of doing it accurately (due to the hair covering the bases) goes down as well. Plus, antelope shrink a lot so quick is good. I don't recall seeing a better one came from 21 either, congratulations!

Way to get it done the hard way!

11M is by drawing only. It is NOT an over the counter area.
-
Ed, Great way to start your first year as a resident of Arizona! Congratulations!

If you are interested in the score of your buck, take mass every time over horn or prong length! Ten of the 12 measurements for the record programs contain an element of mass. If not, take one that appeals most to your eye.

JNJ13, Yes, a small 3 x 3 would likely meet the 70" minimum. And yes, the use of radios or phones to guide a hunter to an animal violates the rules of fair chase for every records program. Also consider entering the state bowhunting records program, Bowhunting in Arizona (www.bowhuntinginarizona.com). The minimum for entry to that program is 65 (but they do deduct 2.5% from the score on velvet entries, so would need to score a little higher than 65 to net 65). Kids under 18 can enter their trophy for no charge.

Congratulations! Beautiful mount, with great hair. In what unit did you take him, and do you know the score? I'm trying to practice my sheep judging skills, but it's hard to tell from just the photos of the front view.

So....what was the result?

I know a person that buys and sells cars from these auctions, and has a dealer's license. I'll send you his info. I'm not sure what he might charge for that service.
-
Me too, since I drew that unit for sheep this year!!
-
I drew a permit for Unit 22! For those that know it, please feel free to send me any advice!

Two sheep tags double the fun!

TRKHNTR, on 13 Jul 2016 - 11:23 AM, said: The auction hunter? Exactly!!! It's an F'd up system when people that waited their entire lives to draw can have the one truly trophy sheep shot out from under them, on their once in a lifetime tag, because G&F worships the rich! -
Dear max point holders,........

Congratulations on the Rocky tag! I'm hoping to get hit with that lightning of luck for Rocky some day too...since I'm applying next year with only two points... -
What Unit to Apply for? Arizona Desert Bighorn Sheep Episode #145
StickFlicker replied to Jay Scott's topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
Jay, Craig and Darr, I really appreciate your taking the time to do this podcast. I listened to it just before applying. While it didn't change my decision on where to apply, it was great information. I enjoyed learning about the units outside of those to which I normally apply. I'm sure it especially helped those people that have joined the sheep game in Arizona more recently, but it also helped keep those of us that have applied for decades informed on the status of sheep across our state.
