Practicing Shots in the Field
Savageman2506 replied to CannonBallZ's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
go out and shoot rocks. Or predator hunt. Screw the range, go shoot on forest land/blm land and practice shooting from sitting positions, off of packs or sticks/bipod, whatever you have. -
Copper bullets for baited bear?
Savageman2506 replied to fisher_hunt's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
put it where it's supposed to be and you'll be fine with the TTSX. I shot a deer from 25 yards with a .25-06 and had good results. I agree with the shoulder shot. -
sorry, cancel that. I had a brain fart and realized I have a long-action savage..... 🤦♂️

I'll take it if you're willing to ship on my dime.

Hard to beat St. Croix. My ugly stick rod feels like a 2x4 after using mine, lol.

I know they're in there, what methods do you guys use to target them? I've fished my entire life and have never caught either species. I took a few trips specifically targeting crappie but came up short every time. Is there a specific part of the lake thats better over another? Or is it just a matter of trying spots until you land on them?

Well, goose egg again. I fished for a few hours, tried two or three spots on the dam side of the lake. I didn't even get a bite. I guess the panfish know I'm a trout fisherman 😂

I'm out here right now giving all y'alls suggestions a try. I'll report back how it goes.
-
I will try that too, I have earthworms, but I'll just use half of them.
-
Thanks for the tip. I'm going to get some small jigs today and try this tomorrow/Saturday. I will post pictures if I do any good.

The advice about tying knots, colored tape (I like lime green duct tape, nobody else usually had that, easy to get at Micahels or a craft store) and bringing jigs/line/hooks is good info.

Just rent the first time. If you make a habit of doing it, then buying will be good. You'll get a chance to see how you like their grade of equipment, setup, rod and reel sizes, etc.

That's awesome. I went out last weekend and putted around for a few hours, casting different spoons, kastmasters, spinners etc but no luck. Not sure what lures people use to target different species, what water depths etc so I just tried spots that seemed to offer some structure. I shouldve taken pictures of the lake when it was lower so I could reference structure spots near shore for spawning. I'll have to try again sometime, before the roads all open and the people start coming up in droves from the valley.

Mec 12 gage 600 JR., 410 Mec sizemaster & 20 gage 600 JR

if you were closer I'd buy that .410 loader. I've never bought a .410 because the shells seem to be like hen's teeth in stores. Good price. GLWS. -
On the plus side, dropping out in fall means time for deer and elk hunting!

sorry, I'm an idiot 😂

I got this Franchi 48AL a little over a year ago for a lightweight quail gun, but quickly found it isn't suitable for me because I shoot lefty and it ejects shells into my face. I've only put 3 boxes or so of shells through it. Shoots very well. Points quickly. It has a 26" barrel with a fixed modified choke. This gun is extremely lightweight. It weighs approximately 5.6 lbs unloaded, and about 6 lbs loaded with high brass #7.5. It's very handy for hiking around the uplands all day chasing quail. Asking $550 OBO, willing to drive as far as Payson, Camp Verde, Prescott, or Ash Fork. Maybe farther depending on circumstances. Possible trades for an O&U 20 gauge or 28 gauge, mid-tier AR-15 like a BCM + cash (from me), a nice .22 bolt action, or a mid-tier scope + cash. Make me an offer. Worst I can say is no, lol.

I gave it a shot at a few spots today with small spinners, but I think the water is still cold, and I don't know what I'm doing. I will probably try it again next week if I get a chance.

no, lower lake mary had a levee burst, but a lower levee contained the burst. Lower Lake doesn't have any fish in it anyways, except for probably a few unlucky ones who got sucked over the spillway. Upper Lake is where the fish are now.

that will work just fine. Don't overthink it.

no way. I'll need to go see that soon
