buy em up people, I'm itchin to win! 😂 -
I hit a bad hail storm on the 180 heading northwest out of Flagstaff yesterday. I pulled over and drove my truck into a thicket of pines because I was afraid the pea-sized hail would turn into quarter sized hail! No damage to truck, but I decided I'd shoot my bow another time and went home. Ground was white like it had just snowed after. Sure wish I'd paid attention to the forecast! I figured it'd just be some occasional showers. Lol

Flagstaff Chapter - Mule Deer Federation
Savageman2506 replied to lucky2hunt's topic in Conservation Group Events
dang, that's my anniversary weekend or I'd be interested in going. Maybe next year. -
wow. That's upsetting.
-
seems like it might be handy if you were trying to hang a whole deer to age in a walk-in cooler or a cold shed, but not very applicable for those of us who hunt in the southwest, especially if you're not a road hunter and aren't packing out whole deer very often

nonresidents get put in the resident pool, so it might appear as an R even though they no longer reside in AZ -
I'll PM you.

fancy meeting you here, lol. Nice sheds again.

add another for the Vortex rangefinder. Mine is practically useless past 600 yards for anything smaller than a barn.
-
I'm a fan of Leupold as well, but other than their Mark5 all of their scopes are better for hunting. Which is fine. I would just have a hard time pushing my rifle past 800 yards and I'd like to attempt 1200 yards or so with it. My buddy has the VX5HD firedots on his hunting rifles and it's very nice. Hopefully I'm able to pick one of those up too.

I'm between a Burris XTR3i, Bushnell DMR3 Elite Tactical, and Leupold Mark 5HD for my rifle I'm building. They're all somewhat heavy, but its going to be a dual purpose long-range shooting and hunting rig. At any rate, Vortex is not on the list.

Still haven't found any. Its probably my ineptitude more than anything though

lol, that lemon party wasn't anything to get excited about anyways.

Congratulations! I saw this on an instagram post earlier, but I had to reread the entire story. What a blessing. Can't think of someone more deserving of this kind of generosity and luck. Thanks for the writeup

I third scouting. You want to teach your kid not only the prep that goes into a hunt, but that hard work does pay off, and you want to be in areas with lots of opportunity for success. I also suggest getting the kid lots of practice time shooting whatever rifle they plan on using. Not just from a bench, but off of a bipod/tripod or laying over a pack, like they'll probably be doing during the hunt. Set a realistic goal for their maximum range based off of their performance and stick to that.

I got stuck on the Mesa last year during OTC archery. Took two hours to get my truck out. That clay is no joke

Practicing Shots in the Field
Savageman2506 replied to CannonBallZ's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
practice your basic marskmanship off of a bench, get comfortable making hits on a paper plate sized object at 100 to 300 yards, then start practicing from seated positions. Buy a box of ammo every paycheck, and practice taking your time and really making your shots count. By fall you'll have 1-200 rounds downrange and will feel much more confident. Get a good cleaning kit as well and clean every 50 rounds or so, maybe more depending on your particulars. Once you've mastered within 300 yards, then start stretching it out.
