Fly Rods are ALOT like bows some just feel better than others... It all depends on your casting style. I love the Sage's because they are aggressive, fast and load quickly. Some people like Scott or Redington's because they are softer... Others like Orivs rods because they see to handle the line better when you have ALOT of line out. I would recommend that you got to a fly shop and try a few out. There are alot of good rods out there and the base technology really hasn't changed that much... Large Arbor reels are nice... they do change the balance of your setup a little bit. Do you need one? No, all the arbor size does is it allows you to take up slack on the reel faster... i.e. you have a fish on the reel and he is running to you. For the most part they are meant for big fish on big water. If you can afford one they are fine but be more concerned about having a smooth drag. That is much more important than the ability to take up slack on the reel. I have a few large arbors and I have maybe really used there ability to take up line on one trip... Stripers in Maine Wt Forward is the way to go... The theory with the DT lines is kind of old school. In the old days you could "wear out" the tip of your fly line. The materials that were used would get scratched and nicked really easily so after time they didn't shoot very well. So when the front half of your DT line got worn out you would just reverse the line and have a fresh line. Also, if you look at the actual taper of the TYPICAL WF next to a DT line you will notice that the WF is usually more aggressive and will allow you do shoot line better with 80+ ft of line out. Personally, I use the WF because when I am lake fishing I like to get a lot of line out there quickly and handle sinking tips MUCH better than DT lines... You might want to pickup a Dan Bailey's catalog or Kaufman Streamborn and look at the different types of lines. I was sponsored by Scientific Angler BACK IN THE DAY so I familiar with there lines, I like them and trust them. If you guys tie flies and ever want to do a swap just tell me... I would be all up for it... Jason

This is a tough one.... You are kind stuck... For small streams I use a 3wt... I love it... I can cast dries and nymphs without any problem... 6 or 7 foot For Lakes... IE bigger trout and Bass I would use a 6 wt.. It lets you toss bigger Bass Bugs and Troll with sinking tips... 10 footer For Alaska... I used a 8wt... Those bigger fish are almost impossible to turn in the faster water so you need something with some beef... 10 footer I used to be sponsored by Sage and I love there rods BUT Cabelas is making some really good fly rods lately... G-Loomis used to make there blanks and I think they still do.... so you can get a great rod at a great price... So if I were you???? I would go with a 6wt... J

Remind me never to get a Nanny or trust Jose Conseco... It was funny when that Republican Senator was ripping on the Trainer about some party and how Jose Conseco said that they weren't there.... then Waxman pulled out the Nanny card... OUCH.... BUSTED... I guess the Nanny said they were there and has proof. Roger and his lawyers crapped there pants, jumped up and were backpeddling... Then the whole nanny tempering.... He is guilty as heck.. J-

Hey Guys... As many of you know there was a GAIN meeting this week in Santa Clara, not the Reservation the one outside of Silver City. Anyway, I went to see what was brewing and give my 2 cents. The basic issue is that the Dept of Game and Fish is trying to find a way for non-consumptive users of the Department's land to pay there fair share. They are proposing that if you are on Game and Fish land and you DON'T have a hunting or fishing license that you have to purchase a permit. From what I see it is focused on hikers, birdwatchers and mountain bikers. Personally, I like the idea. I posted the story on my website. Visit My Website On the site I have PDF's that detail what properties might be effected and permit costs... Jason

The actual rules are on the Departments website but you need to filter thru all the legal stuff.... Kids under 18 don't need a permit. Also, in draft form there was not difference in Resident and NR Fees.... The people at the meeting were not sure if that was going to change. I also asked about the commercial permits, they didn't know if this pertained to photographers selling there work or just people leading trips on the Game and Fish Properties. J

salt and feed no more in 2009
jamaro replied to wardsoutfitters's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I really don't have a horse in this race but.. TAM is right on.. Decisions need to made with solid science.. Not political pressure. For me the bottom line is that it is currently legal, hunters should be supporting each other rather than taking sides. My concern is that today it is feed, then tomorrow it is salt then the day after that it is water, then..... Then we aren't allowed to hunt anymore. J- -
Question #2.. YOU GUYS ARE A BUNCH OF dang LIERS... OKAY me too.. J-

FFD... Maybe the cheaper Cabelas bag but higher end ones are really nice... I easily fly over 100,000 miles a year and I haven't had any problems.... I also like the fact that they stand by there products... I actually saw that Badlands and I thought it was expensive for what you got... But that was just me. J- YOU LUCKY DOG... Who is going to be your outfitter if you go to Kodiak?
-
It depends... If I am going to bring the meat back I use cooler with wheels... If I am not going to be the meat back I use duffel bags with wheels... The key word is wheels.... Most of my bags are Cabelas Brand but the cheapy Walmart American Tourister stuff works fine(it is made by samsonite) Jason PS...Where are you going???

I talked to Dutch about this last night and he said it was probably because they were undersubscribed by residents... He and I had an interesting conversation at the GAIN meeting... but more on that later.... J -

I should have said the horizontally challenged... I am sure I am restating the obvious but... We need to remember that bullets kill thru Hydrostatic Shock to the animals vital organs. It is not like an broad head that kills thru hemorrhaging. If a bullet exits the body then a lot of potential energy that could have been displaced into the animal has been lost. We have all seen those high shoulder kill shots that are just devastating! Why do they work? Because they short circuit the animals nervous system; they turn the spine to jelly. The wound channel on my Coues Deer was amazing. If you looked at the animal when it was not gutted the entry wound and exit wounds were not that impressive but HOLY COW when we opened that sucker up it was HAMBURGER... I have never seen a bullet tear up an animal like that. I actually felt that I destroyed a little too much tissue but dead is dead and if i wanted less tissue damage I could go with a lighter bullet. Personally, I think Berger has stumbled into a better ballistic tip type bullet. I think it makes total since that you would want a bullet to penetrate a few inches (ie get thru the hide and bones) then BLOW UP, effectively transferring all of it's energy INTO the Animal not into the dirt behind the animal. So you might think there will be no blood trails... My deer left a blood trail that was just as good if not better than any other bullet I have used. But to be honest and fair the animal went STRAIGHT Down at 380 yards... Anyway... I think we are beating a dead horse on this issue. I could shoot any bullet in the world but when it comes down to it selecting hunting gear is about TRUST. You need to find a bullet that you trust and that when you decide to let the lead fly you have total confidence in its performance. I don't want to sound like a commercial but these things consistently hit where you point them and they are devastating. J- PS I often think people develop a sense of ownership with hunting gear and feel personally attacked if you don't use what they use. I don't care if it is bullets, bino's or bows, we need to get over that, have fun and be constructive. and no I am not running for office... But I do have a slogan... "Vote Amaro to a better Tomorrow!"
