Hey Everybody... If you weren't outraged about the current Draw System in NM you will be now. As many of you know there have been some A-Plus Meetings around the state. They are basically trying to get input from the public regarding Antelope hunting opportunities. Anyway, 81% of all antelope tags are going to NR. You can see the math and other information on my website. Visit My Website IT IS CRAZY.... On the website I have a link for those that want to take the survey and a URL of an organization that will hopefully be able to help us out. PLEASE PLEASE take the survey contact the NM Wildlife Fed. We have a small window of time that we need to take advantage of. Jason www.thenewmexicosportsman.com

BB You listed 10 things... and 9 are why NR and LO would like the system... and the one that is for residents doesn't quite work because we still have a limited resource. I don't know what direction the Dept is going and I may get totally shot out of the water, NM Sportsman need to speak up and say something. 61%... Really think about that, what if this was oil reserves and 61% of our oil went out of state.... What if this was public water rights??? It isn't any different... J- -

You shouldn't be concerned about Liability... I pulled this from the Open Gate LO Participation Guide... Liability Protection – Landowners who run or participate in for-profit outfitting or guiding operations on their property are liable for accidents that may occur on their property. However, landowners participating in the Open Gate Program are covered under the terms of state statute, Section 17-4-17 NMSA 1978, which provides a liability shield to landowners who allow public recreation on their property without additional charges. You say ranchers can choose who hunts there ranch. If I were to draw a tag on you ranch, I don't think you could control my access, I know that ranchers have tried to pigeon hole bucks for private land tag holders and IMO that is wrong ... I think you were there at the meeting last week and as you heard Pat say 60%-70% of the animals are on private land, so even if they did open up some of the public land I don't think there would be hundreds of extra tags.. Pat said, "maybe 40" As far as have a strange in my house... I understand were you are coming from but, I don't have state property in my house that should be accessible to everybody and I am not making a profit off of that state property. If I did then we would have to work something out. We all agree that this is not an easy issue but 61% is just wrong. J- -

I have a call right now into the Open Gate people to get some numbers... I hope it will not be that big of a deal... I know that ranchers get anywhere from $500 - $2000 for each tag but it depends on alot of factors... The ranchers would not have to participate that is there call, we have quite a few ranches that don't participate in the current system. With my proposal they won't have to worry about outfitters not paying or wondering if they will be able to get rid of all there tags at a decent price. Another thing is that not all LO have enough property to warrant a tag, but say that 3 smaller LO grouped there property together they might get 1 tag. Then the Dept of G&F can give them all a third of he money that would be given. You are right, the Open Gate program would need to be competitive but at least hunters would have a chance of getting a tag. As far as them maintaining water sources, that isn't a big deal because they distribution of tags would be based on biology NOT history or politics. If they don't have antelope they don't get monies from the Open Gate program.. Keep the ideas coming guys, we need to think of all angles on this one before we come up with a proposal. Jason -

I posted this on MM.. What do I proposed? I am still trying to get a grasp for all the issues but lets break this down... The reason we hunt is to manage game and for people of NM to recreate. It is not to subsidies Ranchers. Do they provide water and feed to antelope? Yes but I am pretty sure they wouldn't let there cattle die from lack of water. When it comes down to it, the issue is money, ranchers and outfitters have been given a way to make a buck off of state owned animals. I will concede that the reason populations are stable is because the animals have value to the ranchers. So how do reimbures the rancher for access to there properties and for there water/feed? Well, I think we already have a solution. As many of you know we have a program called "Open Gate", currently a landowner can sign up for the program and he is reimbursed for giving public hunters access to there ranchers to hunt. We could expand this program and get rid of the LO tags altogether. The Ranchers get reimbursed for access/resources and hunter can hunt Where is the problem with this? Outfitters and Guides are going to be cut out of the front part of this equation. Currently, they have a guaranteed income. Say that we get rid of LO tags, those who want a guide can still hire one if they WANT TO, but they are not going to be forced to higher a guide because the outfitters will no longer be able to "tie up" all the tags. In fact, this would benefit NR because they would then have the option to go guided or unguided. So rather than having a 60/40 split, private to public tags everything would go into the same pot and NR will still get there 22%. Okay... Now, what am I missing? Other than the Outfitters and Guides are going to rage? They pulled a fast one on us when this whole thing started so lets try to poke holes in this proposal... Jason -

WOW TLH you have drawn more than I have.... and I have been trying for 15 years and I am a resident... 40% of her income?? I am speechless... and I don't want to sound mean but that is way too much.... Another thing to consider, there is alot of antelope that are never hunted because ranchers to become part of the A-Plus program... In other words they dont' want anybody on there land so they don't participate in the program. Not LO tags or Public Tags... Trespass fees already happen... When you draw an archery tag it is for the unit, I asked the lady that owns the gas station in Datil if I could hunt on her property... $1500.00 for access... NICE... -

Like you said.. it is about the $... What if you were compensated in some way like the Open Gate Program. That way the rancher was reimbursed for the water, grass, etc but the public hunter could have access to hunt. Also, instead of paying for coyote control would you be willing to let a few responsible sportsman kill some of your coyotes? thank you J -
Hey everybody.. I recently got an email for Dan Bishop of Cola Blanca Outfitters (a Sponsor) that he has about 20 cow buffalo hunts at Vermejo Park in NE NM for sale. They are going to $800.00. I think Dan handles everything but the processing. If you are interested give him a call. I would be going on the hunt but I have to be out of town.... Jason

No... The hunter can hunt on Deeded and LEASED public property. They pay for the permit and then they need to purchase a hunting license. Again, to keep us focused it is not about the money it is about the opportunity. J- -

jamaro replied to jamaro's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
For me the bottom line is Antelope are owned by the state taxpayers NOT the LO. This is a welfare system. Everybody is always complaining about hunting becoming a rich mans sport... Well this is a prime example. and yes Tony I could purchase tags... I could probably purchase more tags than the average guy but that is not the point... Once again thank you for you positive input... Did you guys know because of the LO antelope system it is easier for a resident to draw a Once-in-a-Lifetime Oryx tag than an antelope tag???? WHAT A JOKE. J- -

sorry it is 68% but that is still WAY TOO HIGH... j -
It seems like a pretty good deal as far as venison goes... I think that yellowish meat is normal, I have seen a ton a buffalo from all over the country and they all look like that.. I am not sure why. Yeah it is a shoot but they need to cull all of those cows, there really isn't any other way of doing it. Take Care Jason
