Guessing Range and wind drift
azpackhorse replied to coues addict's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I have used a rangefinder for the last 3 or 4 years, I have ranged my last two rifle coues. Mine gets most of it's use during archery hunts. I personally don't think it is in any way cheating, I look at it is as being a tool I use to accurately determine whether or not an animal is within my comfort zone of being able to make a clean humane kill. -
Welcome couesnewbie, I also grew up in Oregon hunting blacktails (Junction City). Basically it boils down to $, the more you pay the better the quality. Good spotters start around $1000.

I am too big to sneak up on coues, so I usually just stand there and try to look like a tree. Aint had much luck sneak'n in on coues, it is alot harder than elk or javelina. Average for me would be around the 100 yard mark.

Dang! You weren't kidd'n were ya......nice deer though. -
I spoke with a officer on the Buenos Aires Refuge a couple of years ago and he said there were a few hogs in there but not too many, it even tells about them in the Refuge flier. It also states that you must hold a big game tag for that area before you can hunt the hogs. There used to be a bunch of hogs along the river by RedRock that my buddies and I chased around with our bows 2 years ago but a developer came in and leveled all that area, know a few people that took some out of there. Some out by Ryan Airfield also, never been out there to look around but seen pictures of hogs taken out there.

Most taxidermists will have an extra charge, anywhere from $50 - $100 depending on the size of the antlers. They have to add a process of soaking in a formaldehyde solution and then freeze drying the antlers which kills the proteins and prevents any bug infestations. -
Well I guess I may be guilty of "giving out too much information" the last thing I wanted to do is to offend anyone. Arizona Griz does have a point about unregistered users. I, like many of you put alot of time into the areas that I hunt all year round and I personally don't mind giving what I see to be vague hints of where to begin in a particular area. By no means do I offer information to try to prove my intelligence, just to help what I see as a fellow sportsman perhaps have a better hunting experience. So if any of this was aimed at my post in the rifle section on 36B, I appologize.

Justin, Your friend was absolutely right about the people, it seems like for every tag issued there are 4 or 5 people. In my experience the Buenos Aires refuge has even more people, probably because there are muley hunts running at the same time. I suggest that you take the 289 exit off of I-19 and take a drive through the area, it will eventually take you out to Arivaca. Take time to explore off of Summit Motorway, it gets hit pretty hard in the early hunts but have faith there are alot of deer in the area (even though it may not seem like it at times). I harvested a nice coues buck in there last Dec. My advice is to sit up high and glass much, when you tired of glassing.....glass some more! Let the other 999 tag holders in that unit do the work for you. Practice shooting distance, it may come in handy. Last year I was lucky, only a 328 yard shot. Good luck on your hunt.

Good LUCK to all on the fall draws! BKF -
I have used a couple differrent brands, cobra, motorola. It is really a matter of how much you want to spend, the last pair I got were free, got them with a set of BFG's only cost me $650.00. A set of batteries will last me all season, we do not use them for guiding each other in on animals, only emergencies and check-ins. BKF
