GMM, I have lost a buck in the Kaibab and an archery bull up north that just absolutely made me sick, I was ready to pack it up and go home after I couldn't find my bull but my buddy convinced me to stay. What taxidermist do you use? I just got my 2003 coues back yesterday from Wellers Studios here in Tucson and they did a magnificent job, I highly recommend them. Good luck on your bear.

Trouble and Danger in UNIT 34A
azpackhorse replied to BACKCOUNTRY's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Who knows who is responsible for this incodent but I definately agree with ARIZONA GUIDE about the people and drug runners even some immigrants that may be desperate. I spend alot of time along our southern border and personally I will not venture out with out carrying a side-arm, regardless of what the law says. I have been checked by US FISH & WILDLIFE on Buenos Aires with a pistol and they said nothing about it, even while archery hunting by AZFG. They know as well as the rest of us what is going on along our borders. It is not the same as it was 20 years ago when all the immigrants wanted is to come across and work on some farm, there is a whole different breed coming across now a days that are ruthless and won't think twice about whack'n someone for a vehicle or a peanut butter sandwhich. Not to say that they are all bad but they are all breaking our laws and littering our land. my .02 -
The way I understand it that all of the previously capped hunts would be divided into 90% non commercial and 10% commercial , residents would have a choice of applying for either and non residents could only apply for the commercial tags. The commercial tag would allow the sale of non-edible parts and the non would not. I am a little fuzzy on the whole concept also but that is what I know.

I shoot a Ruger .300 WIN MAG and am thoroughly convinced it is the best all-around round for me. I've shot my last 2 coues with it using Federal Classic 150 gr softpoints, I haven't had a problem with it blow'n them apart but I didn't have to chase em anywhere neither. I did learn not to use balaistic tips on antelope...cost me an x-tra $100 at the taxidermist, probably won't have to worry about shoot'n another prairie goat in Arizona anyway. I have been trying for awhile to duplicate the accuracy I get from the Federal Classic rounds and can't do it.

I am with 300 wsm on this one, I will be trying to arrow a turkey in 3b and 1 this friday. I drew a good tag down south for coues.

I am getting close to buying a new bow and was wondering if anyone shoots a Mathews Outback or a Bow Tech? Do you like them? Right now I am shooting a Mathews Ultra-Max and it has been a good bow for the last 5 years but I am going to replace it with a new one and make it my back up.

Aren't you the one .270 that was so upset over the letter from USO to thier clients that called Arizonans "uneducated" Just a thought.

I will be at my local G&F meeting voicing my opinion/ suggestions on the 24th, as I was with the first one. I was a little surprised giving the size of Tucson and the amount of people that turned out at the first meeting, sure they would not have had enough room for everyone anyway but that really isn't the point the way I see it. Hopefully there will be a better turn out next week and some kind of resolve. I will admitt that I am guilty of not getting involved until this issue reared it's ugly head recently but I will do my part from here on out.

Dude! I've seen those people in the trees you talk about! Go straight down Dripping Springs RD and you will find them!.....NO KIDDING

I have spent the last few weekends down south scouting and getting some nice bucks on video, I saw a couple of decent mulie bucks Sunday but mostly coues. I am anxious to hed up north to unit 1 the weekend of the 27th and try to stick a turkey. A succesful archery turkey has eluded me thus far although I have scared the heck out of a couple and thinnned the breast feathers out on a nice tom. Anyway I hope the get some nice still pictures this weekend and post them.

YEP, SEEN THAT BUCK IN UNIT 2a DOWN IN THE MILKY WASH.

I have never been in through the north end, only west, south, and through McGee ranch.
-
Access is limited through the McGee ranch, there is a locked gate that takes you up the mountain. I am not sure if they grant access to hunters if they ask. I do know that there is alot of access on the south side of the Sierritas from Sasabe RD.

Saw my first Coues Buck today...
azpackhorse replied to HillBilly_Al's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I was tempted to saw the antlers off of a muley buck I found dead along the Sasabe road Sunday morning but then I started thinking about how to explain it if I was stopped, well that was one of the reasons I didn't saw them off, the other was I don't think I could've quit gagging long enough to see what I was doing and probably would have sawed my finger off or something. I was down scouting the southern units and they are looking very good, lots of tall green grass(really got the allergies going) and water in all of the tanks I checked. I video taped 10 different bucks, a couple of slightly above average in size. Didn't find any real monsters(yet). The southern units should be very productive this year. -
I have a friend that also got that tag as his 2nd choice. 36b is a great unit, alot of deer so pretty much anywhere you go should be productive. Can't give too much info out over the forum or else people get pissy, so if you are not familiar with the unit at all you can send me a PM and I will give you some starting points.

TREESTANDMAN brought up a question that I have often wondered about, anyone have pictures in the photo gallery?

TRAIL CAMERAS ARE ILLEGAL!!!!
azpackhorse replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
I had one of Pima County's finest tail me for about 6 miles this morning, couldn't even see his headlights he was so close. I guess he saw a guy with a camo hat on, driving a big, loud bronco at 3:00am and assumed I was up to no-good. I have to say that I have never had any bad experiences with Game & Fish LEO's. Every one I have delt with has been polite and even helpful. (if any Game & Fish LEO's are reading this I would really like to have an archery bull tag in unit 1 next year!) -

30 yards! Did you poke him with your rifle barrel before you shot him? HAHA! I could swear I saw you picture on an al-Quaida most wanted poster. Good luck in Nov. -
Walking alot is great, see lots of country, get lots of exercise, sometimes you even see critters, I will often walk many many miles.........to get to the place I want to spend the rest of the day glassing. To say that glassing is evil is just a tad extreme, I am not at all opposed to people that prefer to walk all day, heck sometimes I even just watch them through my Leicas as a source of entertainment. I guess that's what makes us all individuals. Good luck on your unit 23 tag asbever8, you have a real quality hunt coming up no matter how you hunt it. .02

Is anyone going to the Tucson AZ Game and Fish meeting 8/3 at 6:00pm? I will be there (big ugly guy with a camo RUGER ball cap on)

I think the internet suggestion got a grand total of maybe 3 votes, kinda funny when it came to a show of hands how all the sudden nobody knew where some of the suggestions came from. All in all I think it was a large step in the right direction, people seem to be getting a renewed sense of participation.

The only time I will wear orange is when I am packing an animal out, I hunt alot down south and I guess I've got into a habit of not wanting "people" to see me.
