Congrats to Cole, you must be one proud papa! 9 point.............geez, darn easterners -
Sunday the deer were holding real tight and bedded down for most of the day where I was. This little buck would not get up out of his bed for nothing, even when my buddy got to about 50yds and threw rocks at him.

Many moons ago when I first moved to Arizona and was new to Coues hunting I had drawn a tag down in the Santa Ritas. I had made my way up to a saddle that looked like a natural funnel route from bedding and feeding areas. I was sitting up on a large boulder when I heard what sounded like to me a hawk or some kind of bird screeching, I searched the sky and trees but couldn't find anything then I heard it again much closer and was able to pinpoint the sound. It was a small Coues buck and when he screamed his mouth came wide open, he was very focused on a steep draw in front of me. I sat and watched as a small cinnamon bear came ambling out of the draw, the buck let him get about 50yds away then would run ahead a little and scream at him. The bear payed absolutely no attention to the buck. I think that for the most part mature deer don't worry too much about bears and won't vacate the area but the fawns definately would be food for them. Last year we seen two lions walk across a hillside that had deer on it before and after they were there. It seems that coyotes pose a bigger threat to deer than bears, deer get really upset when a coyote is near them.

This is just through the camera, it's a Panasonic FZ7. The total zoom is 16.5X and had I waited, Doug at cameraland has the very same one I bought with a ton of xtras for the same price I paid. You will have more photos by Monday, my son and I hunt tomorrow morning. -
I finally broke down and bought a digital camera and here's the first photo of a deer. She was around 500yds away. The glow is from the morning sun.

Here's my setup Bowtech Allegiance 30" draw pulling 72# shooting 28.5" Radial Weave "Predator 300" (8.6 gpi) total arrow weight= 386gr chrono'd @315fps I had to go with a peep alignment tube also. I really like this setup, once I got the let-off adjusted. It had way too much valley, I prefer it to just top over with a nice solid wall, not much valley. This thing is like a primed race horse, if you don't keep constant pressure on it it'll take off. I think this has made me a better shooter. I went with the Trophy Ridge "theme" when I accessorized. TR Matrix sights with 30-70yd pins. TR drop zone rest, and TR quiver. I shoot with a Scott "wolf" release (single caliper jaw).

How the heck did you teach that St. Bernard to hunt quail scotty............................................oh, that's Casey. Good job guys! -
Happy B-day Amanda, hope you have a great day!

I have the 15x51's and love them, they are small and light and really good glass for $500. I have spent many hours looking through these Bruntons and they do not fatigue my eyes at all. I also have Leicas and the main difference is that the Leicas are just a little brighter, but not $1500 brighter

Finally seen a big COUESWHITETAIL.COM sticker on the back of a white newer Dodge 4x4 Sunday morning around 5:45am headind East on I-10 just outside of Tucson. I was riding shotgun in a new gold colored Dodge 4x4 that has some elk decals on the back window, we were probably doing around Mach 4 try'n to get down towards Wilcox before sun-up and shoot some quail.

Pretty much any place in 36C will hold some good bucks, I have seen some real quality bucks in there this year. If you are worried about illegals and want to camp there is usually a temporary camping city back on the Elk Horn ranch. It is a good place to use as base camp with lots of people around. Good luck!

The guy I had look at this rack scored it around 139, I totally blew an opportunity at this buck's little brother. It didn't have quite the mass but knowing what I know now I would estimate that buck above 110. There are a gob of big bucks out there this year.....................good luck! 2 more weeks!!

Here are a few photos of a Coues rack I found many years ago, I let it sit outside for a long time not realizing what I had until about 8 years ago. I was new to Arizona and Coues and just thought it was a nice set of antlers so it sat outside for years, I even hacked it up and had it nailed to one of my fence posts for a couple of years. I found it in the early 1990's. side veiw other side

dang lions, almost as bad as unit 23

Congrats and great job guys, elk country sure is a special place this time of year.

I have 10x Leicas and had to send them in to repair a chipped lense, had them back in 1 week, no charge. I think the quality of glass and customer service is equal for Swarovski and Leica, either way you will have an excellent pair of glasses.

I know this is a longshot but I'll give it a try. I was out near San Manuel yesterday evening towards the back of Mt. Lemon and found a 4-6 year old yellow lab, male, and has been neutured. He had no collar and there was no one around, he was out in the middle of nowhere. I couldn't just leave him so I brought him home, someone somewhere is missing this dog, he is a relentless feching machine and very good natured. If anyone has heard of a missing Lab they can PM me. I have a 120lb yellow lab and they get along real good. I left a note at the store in San Manuel also. Help find Scout's lost people (I named him Scout cuz that's what I was doing when I found him)

All of our kids are grown up and have kids, I have 3 grandaughters and will pay very close attention to interaction with Scout. My other Lab "Duke" is a great big Teddy bear, the grandaughters call him "slobber dog". I haven't seen any aggresive traits yet, the first thing I did was while he was eating I took the food and pulled on his tail (not real hard) and he had no problem with it, so far so good. There is a little jealousy thing building between the two so I have to be careful but that is only with me not any other family member. I really think that it was all meant to be and Scout is at home now. Ya huh Casey, that's what I thought..........................Angel??
-
Thanks for the advice Doug, I didn't think of that and it just so happens that he does have a chip! I called the service and they located the owner...............................BUT, it turns out that there is some kind of problem. The person that was supposed to be the owner hung up on the Pet Locating Service 2 times and the 3rd time they told the service "I no longer have a dog named Angel" (Angel is his name but we're gonna stick with Scout for now). It turns out that "Scout" is from Chandler and I am starting the transfer of ownership process as soon as I finish this post! I just can't believe that someone just dumped Angel (AKA Scout), I really think that there has got to be more to the story BUT, after 30 days and a written notice I will belong to Scout (AKA Angel)

My first rifle was a Western Auto Supply 22short,long,and long rifle sigle shot. It had went through my older brother first then I got it, it is sitting in my safe at home right now 36 years later. My first large bore rifle was a Winchester Model 94 30-30, got it when I was 10 for my birthday. I shot everything from deer to mice with that thing, used to work in town on weekends just so I'd have enough money to buy shells for it. Growing up hunting blacktails in the thick forests of Oregon the 30-30 was pretty much a standard "starter" rifle. I just liked it cuz I thought I was John Wayne or the Rifleman when I had it in my hands! This rifle is in my safe right now as well, no amount of money could ever replace the memories that stir every time I hold those two rifles.
