I don't apply for deer at all in 8. Elk only.

I don't apply for that hunt since I hunt for coues now mainly. Only other hunt I apply for now is the December desert muzzy hunt. I can remember when that hunt had 1500 tags!

The last time I had that hunt was in 1993. dang. That was 20 years ago! Lots of nice bucks in that unit!

243 is a great gun for a kid. But don't over look a 22-250!

Go with the 50mm. I have shot many coues deer within the first 10 minutes of legal shooting light. The problem you will come into is your binos will be able to see the critter but your scope will be to dark to see it with only a 40mm. Just my 2 cents.
