Lessons Learned - Not all of 'em I like! Kaibab Buck
coueshunter replied to lucky2hunt's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
ilene, i really enjoyed your story and can totally relate. great buck you shot and even greater level of understanding you learned. i know for me, it seems like unless i shoot some unquestionable 250" monster, many people respond to my deer pictures like i didnt measure up. it may just be me, but i would like more appreciation of the overall hunt by some people i talk to. many people do not even know how difficult it was to find big bucks this year on the kaibab let alone get a shot. my story this year would be as much about the search and long shot as it would be about the buck, but sadly many people dont know enough to ask about all the important things, only what the score is. like devin, i want big bucks, its a personal thing, but to make score the only measure of success diminishes the animals we all love. my biggest success this year was the excitement my son travis had enjoying the whole kaibab experience then shooting his trophy. that made the whole hunt for me. thanks for your great story...allen -
good job dave and seth. it was tough on the late hunt with the weather. we hunted nasty oak choked canyons to find our bucks. congrats on your good deer..allen

Great buck. Congrats to the hunter and everyone involved............Allen Taylor...........

We had a fantastic time. The weather made it a bit difficult in that the bucks were spread out all over from top to bottom. The acorn crop was beyond belief, the deer were bedded down and eating while bedded. My buck was so fat from eating acorns. We shot Travis' buck on top and my buck down low. Lots of traveling between the top of the unit and lower down. I was so proud of Travis. He got excited and missed a buck opening morning at 315 yards, but about 1/2 hour later we found another buck and he smacked him on the first shot at 519 yards. This new 7mm with the leupold scope/yardage turrets is really the way to go. My buck we found monday morning chasing a doe going in and out of the oak brush. It all happened really really fast, getting the pack off, setting up the tripod, locate the area the buck is at in the scope and hope for a shot. I found the tree line/oak brush he went into and then the doe came busting out with him behind her. I had one shot opportunity before he was gone and hit him good at 680 Yards . The doe came back to where the buck was last seen 2 times then took off. We spent the next hour glassing trying to locate him in the shadows/timber/oakbrush. We found him finally at 569 yards, we could only see his head/neck area and then his butt past a tree. I shot him (after alot of deep breaths) in the neck and that was all she wrote. Then the pack out of that nasty canyon started. I couldnt be happier with this big buck and Travis' great buck. The companionship in camp was fantastic. My hat goes off to my good friends Duwane, Luke, Mark, Chef, Kirk....And my son Travis. We had so much fun and joking around. I met some new guys Greg and Scott from CW and have great great memories.............The Kaibab is such a special spot, I cant wait to get back again................thanks for letting me share..............Allen Taylor...........

Problem is KUIU doesnt have anything in stock in Vias, only the new verde. I have a hunt coming up and would prefer to have at least 1 more pair of pants.

Come on, help a guy out..........you guys can part with a couple measly vias camo pants.......upgrade your wardrobe to the New Verde stuff and dump to me the old vias. Vias doesnt work, the deer can see you for miles..............LOL.................Allen..............

Federal Govt. Wants Sportsman's Dollars to Balance The Budget
coueshunter replied to azmetalman's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
hopefully alot of you get involved and write letters/email people. this is wrong.........allen taylor -
12345, part of the kaibab problem stems from bad science in the past. there were way to many does being killed because the thought back then was that the winter range could not support the deer numbers. currently with the doe harvests down, there should be an increase in buck fawns and we will see more mature bucks. p.s. i have been on the late west side hunt the past two years and personally have seen alot of good bucks. hopefully this year is even better.....allen....

123456, I am not arguing the issue one way or the other. AZGFD has certain benchmarks they use to manage wildlife. I would just like to see from them what data is supporting a "overharvest" situation and what are they considering overharvest %. Back a few years ago, some of the same questions were asked of AZGFD regarding the doe permits on the Kaibab. Since that dialog, AZGFD has revised some of the prior "management practices" to reflect what we were seeing. So in conclusion, I just want to find out from them 1. what is their harvest objective % 2. show the data to support this reaction. Never once said which side of the issue I am on, just want to ensure that AZGFD is using sound science............Allen...........

123456: I think you are not understanding what I am saying. If you read through the data, you will see there is nowhere near an "overall success rate" of over 20% on over the counter archery. 1. My simple point is for AZGFD to indicate what success percentage they are managing to and then if we are exceeding the management goal then adjustment is necessary. 2. If CWD can be shown to increase due to salt, minerals, corn, feeding, show me the data so we can adjust/modify the law. I would like AZGFD to have a public "open question/answer period" where the sportsmen/sportswomen can express their views about this subject..............Allen.............

Once again, I would like to see the statistics that support "high archery success". I still havent seen any actual data from AZGFD that is showing where archery is harvesting too many deer. I need to see some data showing this to be the case before I would support banning salt/minerals..........Allen Taylor..........p.s. I also would like to see statistical data showing where there is an increase in CWD due to salt/minerals.........

if azgfd is looking to ban salts/attractants because of cwd/fair chase infringement and too high success rate then we need to see the data that supports their case. allen taylor....
