Last year in southern AZ I could kinda pattern the deer when they were in velvet. They spent quite a bit of time in the flats and they somewhat regularily entered and exited from the same general area in the flats. They fed where they normally fed but bedded down in the flats.........This so far is the only reliable pattern I have experienced..............I am going to try and stick one with a bow if they do the same thing this year............Allen...........

The fires will be beneficial to the deer herds. It may look bad seeing the burnt up trees, but the brush/undergrowth that has been cleared will allow the grass and forbs to grow for tons of food. I think overall this will be good for the animals..................good luck on the draws..............Allen...........

Amanda, it might be pricey but a good tin cloth type low profile baseball cap with a logo on it would be great..........I have a T/C contender hat like what I described and the material is impregnated with oil and it keeps the rain off and lasts a long time............I am up for any of the stuff that has been talked about............Allen.............

B&C vs. David Miller
coueshunter replied to coueshunter's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I have read most of the posts off huntamerica and MonsterMuleys with great interest. I think most of you know I posted David's first letter he faxed to me and then I got B&C email and phone call. Both David's letter and the B&C email are legit but remember both parties are explaining their side and ultimately this issue would have to go to court for the final "End Game". I doubt court will be the next step so what we have is two positions that would need continued proof of evidence to settle the accusations that continue to fly..................I can appreciate both sides even when I disagree, but hope we all learn that B&C is supposed to be an instrument for conservation/habitat restoration/fair chase.............., not a country club.........I hope we also remember that playing by the rules is the right thing........whichever way this disagreement goes, I hope its in the best interests of Trophy Animals and that Justice is served............Allen Taylor......... -

NEW WORLD RECORD P&Y COUES....
coueshunter replied to huntscout's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
This buck and many others are in Duwane Adam's new coues book. The book has been held up as most of you know, but should be out for sale in the next month. There is a full story on that buck and it isnt a fake like the NM supposed world record........call 520-385-4995 or send Amanda an email here and she can sell it to you..........There will be tons of good stories/pictures in this book and it definitely is worth the wait..........I have seen various chapters and it is great....................Allen............ -
Mel, not to be evasive but give couesnut a call. I went last year and spoke with couesnut before the trip and he helped me figure out what to watch out for and what paperwork was needed................you dont want to get caught up in any mix ups down there..................Allen.................602-454-2146

So what did you put in for?
coueshunter replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I did like Scott, put in first choice 12aw, 33 Dec, 36c Nov, 36c Oct, 33 Nov.................I dont love mule deer, but would like to kill one biggie somewhere around 190 then stick with coues the rest of my life................Maybe one day I could afford a Mexico muley hunt......................Allen.................. -
I am back from surgery and figure in about two weeks I will run down south to a sweet spot. I dont think anyone shed hunts these ridges so hopefully I have luck like Travis and Josh did. I expect it will be a hot one though.........................Allen....

I spent alot of time in 2001 hunting the late hunt. I hunted up cherry creek road and hiked in after riding a 4 wheeler into an area that vehicles could not get into, the road was ripped up to bad. I worked my butt off to find deer, they would be in pockets even though the area looked ideal. I think the lions have killed tons of deer regardless of whether there was cattle or not. I think the depredation problems stem from years and years of under harvesting of lions and not just the recent last few years. I saw one 100+ buck and two 85ish bucks and the rest were small. I wasnt in the pines, I was in juniper/prickly pear and manzanita. My gut feel is the quantity of the deer per square mile is way lower than down south. I hunted around 12 total days and was a bit disgusted with low coues and muley numbers............Allen.............

I am kinda screwed for a few weeks, I have surgery next tuesday and will be laid up for a couple weeks. Get out there and find me some monsters. p.s. Amanda showed me a picture of one either you or your family found..........what a hog.............Allen...........

Let me know, I am doing honeydo's all weekend. On a side note, I think I saw your photo album. If its the one where you have a good front/back picture of a buck around 190 or so and you have a picture titled "truck full of bucks" then you had some real nice pictures and two real good bucks. Your buddy's buck sure had tons of mass and a couple of the bucks lined up seemed to have trash/droptines on them suggesting that area probably has produced some great non-typs along with the good genes you see in your two bucks. Great pictures Travis. Dont you live in AZ ? Thanks again if it was your photo album..........Allen Taylor.................

Griz, I like your rambling because it made perfect sense to me. On a side note, I am still thinking about trying to shoot all the listed subspecies in North American deer and its something like 18 seperate (huntable) deer. In that the subspecies for Muleys is something like Rocky Mountain, Desert, Inyo, burro and some other one I think. I think there are three types in CA. I have shot Sitka blacktail, columbian blacktail, rocky mountain muley, northern whitetail, coues whitetail and some weird thought bounced in my head to maybe someday get the other deer since my Deer Slam is complete. Howd that ramble sound????????? .....LOL.........Allen

I hope Amanda can help with this, I am curious for the laypersons definition. I think there are around 14 subspecies here in north america and of course the differences are obvious between an Alberta whitetail versus an AZ coues but I think Red is looking at why are the Carmen so close to coues? kinda like how close a coastal Ore or Wa blacktail is to a Sitka blacktail. Are there some close to "Twin" type whitetail subspecies genetically, like the Carmen Mountain whitetail and the Coues or is habitat the predominant reason these two whitetails are small with obviously large ears proportionate to their body to help dissapate heat in a desert environment? I know I am rambling but generally I wonder how we determine subspecies after years of potential genetic overlapping..................Allen

Amanda is absolutely right. Couple other tips are that with the way the rut has been late the last couple years maybe the first two hunts are not as bad as some people think and also if you are the first hunter to hunt the buck you have been scouting makes it alot easier to kill a good buck before he has been bumped numerous times during the first two hunts........Allen..........p.s. you can send me a note and I will tell you about some specific units and other stuff.........environmentalfiltration@msn.com
