Last year I saw 6 bucks together during the Nov hunt. This year I saw 5 together during the October hunt. in the group of 5 this year, three were young forked horn bucks.........same with the group of 6 from last year........Allen......

Last year was the only time I have been to Mexico hunting. The rut had not kicked in full swing, just a few bucks looking rutty and I was there the last week in December. If my memory serves me, some of the ranch hands said it was a late rut but I would bet MX coues rut later than other coues...

Last year I tried a grunt tube by carlton and it was a modified one specifically lower in volume for sitka blacktails. It seemed to perk the interest of a couple coues bucks in late december down in Mexico, but it did not make them come running looking for a fight. I have tried it elsewhere here in AZ but havent seen any great activity.........I havent rattled or used scents, I just watch the wind and am real careful on attempting to keep my clothes as free as possible from smells...........Allen.......

Amanda's bio in the AZ Republic
coueshunter replied to kphunter's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I saw it as well and was happy for Amanda. She deserves a good write up and for this website to continue to grow.............congrats Amanda...................Allen....... -
Brett: I saw a few things this past weekend that seemed as if pre-rut or whatever was happening. I was blown away by a couple bucks and what they were doing. I had a couple deer lightly locking horns kinda jousting and I saw one big buck running around like it was rut........good to hear you saw that buck mount the doe, then someone else saw some rut activity way way too early like me........AT.....

If you have a pair of 15x bino's then I wouldnt bring the spotter unless you are going to field judge your deer. It is alot easier on the eyes to look through bino's. If you only have 10x bino's then bring the spotter and use the tripod for both the binos and the spotter. Its alot easier to see deer using a tripod than holding the binos........Allen.......

Not to beat a subject too much but instead of being overly concerned about where to go in 22 make sure you are equipped with the right optical gear. Make sure you have a tripod and good bino's preferably 15x's and glass your butt off........I have never hunted 22 but have seen deer from the fish hatchery at tonto creek down to above Roosevelt so of course there are plenty of deer in the unit and lots of access, just get off the road a mile or so and set up early and glass......hope you guys do well.............AT......

Ocotillo patches have always held deer for me whether its October or December. I havent seen as many deer bedding in these ridges because I am glassing the SE facing slopes with Ocotillo which is the feeding areas. The bedding areas on the NW sides typically are brushier with less Ocotillo. I think they like the Ocotillo because of the leaves they feed on and I have seen bucks rub their horns on them. Its hard to see the deer in the ocotillos some times but I think the deer get a good sense of protection among the ocotillos and they feel comfortable/safe. Also for a december hunt, the deer are less predicatable, they move alot more than earlier hunts because of the rut just kicking in late Dec. You can see deer up moving later in the morning, mid afternoon and evening much more often than the earlier hunts. Glassing is the key and if you find does then look real hard for bucks if the rut has kicked in..............Allen....... as for flats, I personally believe the big bucks like the flats and with pressure they move further out on the flats because its really hard to kill one out there and the deer feel safe. There is always food, shade etc.......on the flats.......

Coues hunting show on Northwest hunter
coueshunter replied to a topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Mexico
Thanks for the info Tom. I dont get the outdoor channel jus OLN here in Phoenix so I will get a tape from you and watch during the off season with the other coues tapes I have. Thanks......Allen Taylor....... -
I hunted with my son and another guy friday, saturday and sunday. We saw 12 bucks and 15 or so does. My son is 10 and I had him on deer twice but he had a tough time trying to find them in the scope. I saw 2 real shooters and the rest were smaller bucks. The wind played havoc with us on sunday, it was blowing around 40 miles and hour so the deer were not moving at all. Saw lots of hunters and had bucks bumped twice by still hunters walking over the ridge we were glassing. Glad everyone had a good hunt.......Allen Taylor.......

Dont take the chance with this gun. It would be a shame if you see an absolute monster at 350 yards and you dont drop him. I was going to use this same caliber and was given the advice from a well respected guide. I use a .257 wby mag...........Allen.........

Brett said it best. Glass your butt off. I dont know of anyone that rattles their bucks up but give it a whirl. I would glass all day long because they are up and moving around at more unpredictable times and chasing does. If you find does, look and look again for bucks they will be around especially right around the last week of december. I would watch the wind more than use a cover scent because most the scents are not made with coues urine but rather regular northern whitetail products that may give off the wrong scents/hormones. Glass up the buck and bee line in to a spot to kill him.........Allen Taylor........

I am real curious about this as well. Amanda will probably know all the particulars. What blew me away was the buck I shot last year in Mexico was only 3 1/2 years old and is over 100" even with the bad drought year they had. Cant wait to here the general statistics...........Allen..........

I see this stuff as all in fun but do understand the sentiments surrounding "lowering ourselves" to the others. I for one hunt most everything and would gladly accept a Kaibab tag to shoot a monster. I do want to point out that Amanda does stand for all deer (she sits on the Arizona Deer Association board) and she puts a ton of time into habitat restoration and generating monies for both Muley and Coues. I dont mean to speak for her, just want to point out that her passion is Coues but she of course loves all deer species.........Thanks Amanda for a great website.................Allen Taylor...............

I went out for the saturday evening glassing session and sunday morning. I saw around 30 deer and 12 bucks. My son and I have the october hunt and it will be my sons first buck hunt so he and I were happy to stumble on a few shooters............the monsoon's were good to southern AZ and the animals all looked good. The bucks were all in velvet still but some were racking a little so any day now they will be stripping the velvet off..........best of luck to the early hunters.........Allen......

I want a few of those, I have taken so much flak about Coues. I have had guys call coues the "spider monkey of the cervid family", "midget deer" etc, etc, etc, and I will send one to Mike Duplan aka Buckspy on monster muley's..........its all in fun and most wont take it as snobbish but rather a continuation of an age old ford vs. Chevy battle..............Thanks Amanda...........

David: I used a ballistic tip last year and would recommend them. As for where you have scouted, I would buy the book "how to hunt Coues Deer" that is on this site. It talks about FS roads 92, 795 and 4111. The most important thing I could recommend would be a good set of bino's and a tripod so you get up high and glass the S.E. facing slopes in the mornings/evenings and N.W. slopes during the daytime. You should start glassing out far first thing in the morning before the heat waves and work on in closer. Glassing for coues is alot tougher than muleys do to the size and how gray they are. I use 15x swarovski's for most of the glassing and 10x's I carry on bino buddies.........hope this helps.........ask more questions and tell us what hunt you have.........Allen Taylor.................

I just got my copy of How to hunt Coues Deer and it is fantastic, better than I expected. The authors Duwane Adams and Tony Mandile did a fantastic job. The book is definitely a keeper...........it outlines units, tactics and has tons of pictures. I saw a couple coueswhitetail members in there and that was pretty cool. Antlerboy and Sniper provided Tony with good stuff and Amanda did as well. Go to the bookstore here and get your copy before they are all gone. I read it cover to back page this morning and it is beyond great..............Allen..........

Where can we get the video? Amanda, can you get it to sell here? Thanks for the tip Jason.....................Allen Taylor....

Brett: I would imagine that he should spend a bit of time glassing down toward the border and hunting the unit like its Mexico because I know Ulmer and some others have pulled some big Muley's out of there but I would imagine its closer to the border and away from where everyone drives alot..........AT..............
