    Arizona looses court case!

I will be there today........I am really hoping against all odds that something good can come of this. The alternative is scary........I really believe Lark and others are correct........the AZGFD/Commissioners/Attorney Generals office is responsible for not stopping this when they had the chance. I hope the grass roots effort helps force AZGFD to do the right things..........Allen Taylor.....

    Attendees at the 7-16 Meeting

I was there till rght at the end. I spoke twice with my opinions and questions/thought processes I wanted to make sure the commission was thinking about. Bottom line for now, the best we can do for this years draw is to send our support to AZGFD via email this weekend that says for them to ask Judge Bloomfield to allow this years draw to go through and we can all work on a solution for AZGFD to implement another draw system that is not discriminatory for 2005. I hope to be there for Mondays meeting.......Allen Taylor......

Hope all goes well getting the final product soon............Allen.........p.s. I could be trained to put the camera on my tripod instead of the 15's.........I work pretty cheap too.........just throw in a Mexico coues tag and we can call it even........LOL.......Allen.......

    hunting videos

There are a couple video's that have specific coues hunts on them. There is a video series called "The grand slam of deer" put out that has coues,blacktail,sitka-blacktail, whitetail and Muleys that is a bit cheesey but has coues on it. There also is a Gary Bogner video out showing a good coues bow hunt on it. Dan King has a video for about 25.00 that you can call his house and buy it from him. Thats all I know about other than the ones you posted. P.S. AZ guide. The western whitetail and western whitetail II are the McClenndon's video's and they are good ones.......Allen Taylor......

    New law in Mexico

As for bringing sheds accross, I have brought them through Agua Prieta and "Tried" to bring them through Nogales this past January. I had all the sheds confiscated from me in Nogales because I didnt have the necessary paperwork Kirk is talking about. In each border crossing you will hear various different stories or you will be passed through when you should have had the sheds taken from you. The whole point is that USFWS is now enforcing proceedures that may have been in place before but not enforced. We need to make sure we are following all the laws so you dont sit at the border for 3 hours discussing Lacey act violations like I did this past January. Thanks Ivan and Kirk for passing on proceedural info and anyone who can should come to the Arizona Deer Association clinic to hear the most recent info from USFWS............it may save you some hear ache...........Allen Taylor.............

    New law in Mexico

Ernesto: The meeting is August 19th at 5:30 pm at the Moutain Preserve Reception Center in Phoenix. Doug McKenna from USFWS will discuss any/all new proceedures the USFWS will enforce this year. He will probably discuss what has transpired with their meeting with Mexican governmental officials. In addition to this presentation there will be Duwane Adams talking about coues hunting and Jay Gates talking about Mule Deer. Jim White will discuss tripods etc... and Chris Denham will assist Jim and speak on optics. This is the annual Arizona Deer Association meeting that is free to members and around 10.00 for non-members. There will be guns raffled off and lots of interesting Monster deer heads to view. Hopefully lots of southern AZ boys show up along with the Phoenix contingent. Thanks Kirk for the straight forward info on Mexico...........Allen Taylor...........

    New law in Mexico

Couescrazy: I have not heard this from anyone yet. I would not be surprised if a Mexican Outfitter association would like this but the Landowner and Government will be the deciding parties. There will be a great meeting in Phoenix August 21st where our USFW will discuss any upcoming changes for Mexico. USFW will present the Mexican requirements for hunting and any rules that are new or old that will now be aggressively enforced. I know the Mexican Gov. is wanting to ensure they get all they can in tag fees etc. and the landowners dont want to see a reduction in hunters so I would doubt the Outfitters can push through any protectionism plans like requiring a Mexican guide if the law will reduce the money pouring into Mexico.........just my two cents.......Allen Taylor...........

    NEW NT WORLD RECORD COUES....

This is a "true" rumor or whatever you want to call it. Kirk Kelso has the skinny on the deer and will probably post it here soon. He will be back to B&C's banquet where the award will be presented. The buck is huge around 196 and is from AZ the San Carlos tribe property. Shot quite a few years back and sold recently to a collector. It looks and checks out as a coues so it will be nice to "de-throne" the existing muley looking world record. Hopefully Kirk will enlighten us further........Allen Taylor..........

Any trouble w/ illegals in unit 36?

Redrabbit: I hunt down that way and have for the past 3 years. Unlike Ernesto, I have seen the traffic increase accross the border and have spoke to many people about the risks associated with the Drug Traffic. This is where most of the problems may occur for hunters. Just beware of anyone with a backpack who is not a hunter. The mules typically run in two's and probably wont bother anyone if you stay out of their way. The 36 units really have some major problems with litter, drug trafficking and people trafficking so keep your eyes open and dont leave vehicles/campers/tents unattended for long periods of time........Allen....

    No more Lion Hunt??

I went to the meeting today and was proud to see tons of hunters there. The room was filled with hunters and the local outdoor radio host was there passing out pro-hunter t-shirts that everyone pulled on over their shirts so it was a sea of white pro-hunters filling the seats. I would bet that 80% of the people there were pro-hunter. I think we might have won this one outright........Thanks to everyone supporting this issue.....................Allen Taylor......

I shoot a .257 wby mag and use 115 ballistic tips. I think the ballistic tips are the right choice for coues........

    2004 Hunt Recomendations

I didnt think they were out yet. I know we have a meeting with the game commission before they implement quotas for the Kaibab so I thought the regs were not out yet. If they are, I would want to get a copy............Allen......
  15. AFB. THANK YOU and your unit. I would bet anyone on here would be happy to start a discussion or picture posts on anything you need. I bet your missing home and hunting so fire away and all of us will do what we can to make your duty a bit easier. Hopefully I draw a premium tag and can post a 120" monster for you.......LOL..........take care........Allen Taylor...........

    What method you use?

for coues I hike into my morning spot about 1 hour before light. The morning spot is up high and I have a good view of alot of country. I then can move and glass bedding areas during midday and take my nap out wherever I am and hunt past dark then flashlight back to the truck.......Elk we hunt morning then go back for lunch/nap then hunt early afternoon till dark during bow season.....Allen.....

    Lion Experiences

I missed all the fireworks too. As for predators, we need to manage and manage closely to make sure we keep predators under control while we manage deer numbers. Someone just mentioned fawn mortality numbers and range conditions. Sure, range conditions play a huge role but as an example the Kaibab has approximately a 66% survival rate on fawns this year and their weights are good. Last year the survival was good as well. The carrying capacity on the Kaibab is substantially higher than the deer population so my question in this scenario is this. "Should any does be harvested on the Kaibab?"........I think we need to ethically kill alot more lions, coyotes, bobcats and transplant deer to various locations in the state instead of increasing doe harvests. We need a comprehensive game management plan that encompasses predators/transplanting of deer.............sorry CHD seems to be leaving, hope he doesnt and hope all of us can continue to express views in a way to offend the least amount of people.......Allen Taylor.........

    Typical or Nontypical

I would smoke the non-typ. I want some trashy bucks. Also I probably would have Lark with me so he would pack it out so it really doesnt matter how far from the road it was..........LOL.............I would bet Lark hasnt shot very many bucks close to the road anyway so he is used to the long pack outs. Thats another reason he has young strong kids to pack his deer out for him..............lol.......Allen Taylor..........
  20. I received this email and voted to keep the forest open. I know shutting off the whole thing from vehicle traffic would create more older class deer but holding the Border control back and decreasing day usage is not what we want in my opinion......Allen Taylor.....

    Happy Birthday Scott Adams

Scott, I still have a year on you. The hills are getting steeper but the bullxxxxx is getting deeper. Have a great b-day and I hope the draw gods are good to you this year........Allen Taylor.......
  22. Everybody needs to call and leave a message with the Governor 602-542-4331 supporting the AZGFD's decision to kill a few lions that are a threat to hikers/bikers etc in Sabinon canyon. This is a hot issue and there is a commission meeting going on today that I think Amanda is at where alot of anti-hunters will be in the media trying to stir up Napalitano and get her to issue anti-predator control solutions to this problem. We need to support our AZGFD and not let Humane Society, PETA or other groups win this important battle for preservation of hunting rights, gun rights and an independant game department that listens to us sportsmen/sportswomen...........thanks Allen Taylor................

    hunters wanted

Tell us a bit more about yourself. I can tell you I am 41 Married with two boys 8 & 11 and try and get them out as much as possible. My wife doesnt really like to go out much. I hunt elk, muley, coues and quail. We sometimes go out for dove just to get out. Like AZ guide, I can point you in the right direction if not hooking up with you. There should be some good posts here. p.s. I live in Mesa.........Allen Taylor.........

    Flushing -vs- Glassing

One other thing I have learned is that years ago you didnt have to manage as many other hunters around you. The last two years I have not had any problem finding a good buck or two but have had hunts blown while the stalk is in progress by Dumb & Dumber coming over the hill trying to jump shoot coues. this type of guy most of the time didnt know they bumped deer let alone a Big buck. They stopped on the ridge line huffing puffing and then started glassing, talking bitching about not seeing anything........I just watched hidden from them for awhile, pissed about the blown stalk...... This type of pressure wasnt around 15-20 years ago so killing a buck that isnt bumped every day during a longer more liberal season where guys where buying over the counter december tags was a bit easier......Nowadays you need to be a better manager of the potential problems from other hunters blowing your area and have multiple back up spots to go to especially if the season is only three days..........I think its a bit tougher today but thats just more of a challenge...........LOL>......Allen............

    Flushing -vs- Glassing

Chris, I got to thinking some more on this (scary that I think....LOL....) I have spoken with Jay and some others like Duwane Adams and the general concensus is that it is much easier to kill a good buck by spotting/stalking. Of course you take them as the opportunity arises but back when O'connor was writing, there wasnt optics like today and nobody had thought of the tripod for bino's so the best method to cover alot of ground and see as many animals was by horse. Jack O'connor was an expert crack shot and had to be if he wanted to kill coues off horseback. Back in that day, he shot at any buck he jumped. When you jump a buck, it doesnt give you any time to guess the score so unless I have no other options, I still think the spot/stalk is by far the preferred way for me. Great topic.......thanks.......Allen........
