To answer the question, a buck will travel long and hard during the rut while other times of the year he will stay in/around his home area. There could be alot of answers to this issue of how big his home range is but as to finding his sheds in and around where you saw him in december would more than likely be just luck. He probably traveled quite a ways rutting........Allen.....

Alaska Bear & Deer Pics
coueshunter replied to DesertBull's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Great pictures and what a great sounding hunt. The weather looked like it cooperated with you, it can get really nasty. When I went a few years back to Kodiak Island, it was late November and it was really rough weather. Arent the deer really nice looking with the double throat patch.........thanks again for sharing your great hunt...........AT........ -
That is a fantastic bull. I am with casey, I bet he is closer to 380 than 360. I am really happy for you..............Allen.........p.s. I was up in unit 1 for the last couple days and we were into lots of bulls.....wind screwed us up a bit now and then but this should turn out to be a great season........congrats again...........

Everyone, there is the FINAL meeting for Sportsmen for Wildlife this saturday at 9:00 at the following address: National Bank of Arizona 6001 N 24th Street Phoenix, AZ meeting is in the conference room in the back of the building. I personally am going to ask the following questions: 1. "Is there a written position statement showing that Don Peay/SFW will not go after additional Governors tags to raise money?" 2. "Is there a written position statement showing that Don Peay/SFW will not support, and in fact fight any legislation that is introduced regarding landowner tags?" 3. "Is there a written position statement showing that Don Peay/SFW will not support outfitter set asides like they just did in Wyoming that was voted down by the average sportsman and the Wyoming legislature?" These are my personal concerns and I will voice them. I hope any and all other hunters show up for their own sakes and the sake of the future of Arizona. Maybe all is fine with SFW but based on their recent track record in Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, I have some real Major Reservations about supporting them unless they write something down.......Allen Taylor.......602-454-2146..........

North American Deer Slam
coueshunter replied to Shiras's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I normally dont say anything unless I mean it, the only issue I will have is saving up the cash. When I went last time it was alot of cash because of the airfare then the 1500 for the transporter. I have quite a bit of info on how we could use an floatplane to fly us out to a cannery and use it as a base camp that could save quite a bit of money but not reduce our overall hunt quality. Anyway, if people think they might want to do this, and not just window shop, I will provide what info I have. Also, there is the road system that can be hunted around Kodiak proper so maybe a two day hunt using Kodiak as the base then on to the cannery if the road system areas are not producing..........AT......... -
North American Deer Slam
coueshunter replied to Shiras's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I would be very interested in going back to Kodiak. The outfit I used as a base-camp (really a boat) was called a transporter where they picked me up in Kodiak and went around the island to Uganik Isl. They would take me to shore each day by Zodiac boat and I would hunt all day then radio back to be picked up. I need to get a bigger Sitka and would love to plan a trip in the next two-three years. I paid something like 1500.00 for this boat service which included meals, lodging and back three years ago that was the best deal I could find. I still have their info if anyone is interested.........Allen.......P.S. I would love to hunt a columbian whitetail, they were on the protected list when I still lived in Washington state. Would love to add that to my list.........AT....... -
I will be up elk hunting in unit 1 but look forward to hearing what transpires....Thanks Stan for the update..............Allen.......

From my understanding, SFW is already set up in Arizona-informally. This past meeting was to get input from sportsmen groups, non-profits, regular joe's etc.....to get the voice of what Arizona sportspeople want from SFW. I understand that Pete Cimellaro is the representative being paid by SFW for Arizona. I also understand that most all groups like ADA, AES, Antelope, Desert sheep etc......have given tenative approval for signing up with SFW. I also understand that any/all conservation groups will contractually be required to submit 10% of their gross receipts annually to SFW. I guess I am just very concerned that the SFW issue has went this far without very many people understanding what SFW is all about plus even though we as average joe's are told to get involved, I personally have not seen enough public information that would allow any person to know who to talk to or where to find out how to get involved. It all feels very political. I know since I did not make the meeting, anyone can say "tough luck, you should have been at the meeting"............concerned average joe...............AT.........

Scouting report 36b (pics)
coueshunter replied to azcouesandelk's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I really hope you have a great hunt and shoot a nice buck. This buck in the pic is an nice buck...........the 36 units are overrun with border crossers and the patrol is very cautious and checks out any camp, so dont be upset, they are trying to protect us.........makes the hunt harder but you will shoot a good buck this year............Allen.......... -
Need Help Scoring this Carp
coueshunter replied to matthewp45's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
no disrespect to anyone, but that is muley through and through. I also think he scores alot higher than what the current guesses are. If I am not mistaken, b&c has tons of record book bucks that dont have inside spreads much greater than 24". This deer has such deep forks I bet he goes close to 200. either way I would shoot him in a minute. Send the picture on over to monster muleys and see what the guesses are there.............thanks for an outstanding picture..........Allen................ -
I didnt respond before but will pipe in now. I think we should kick in something. I wont throw out a percentage or dollar amount, but quite frankly we all get a few bucks worth of enjoyment per week out of this site and I for one have only bought a few things here but use the site weekly. I wont bring up membership dues.......whoops.........lets self analyze ourselves and maybe donate off our classifieds our something to ensure this fantastic forum continues to grow and flourish..........I sincerely doubt the few paid advertisers provide any where near enough income to cover the time Amanda takes to keep all the great info current and new............Amanda, count me in for a company donor/sponsor or whatever. I can take care of it by paypal or mail you a check, just let me know.........THANK YOU for this great place to learn, socialize and drool over pictures..........Thanks wetmule for bringing this up.............Allen.........

North American Deer Slam
coueshunter replied to Shiras's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Just to make sure we are all on the same page, Jay shot the slams years ago even before coues was recognized as a seperate B&C animal. I dont think he was rich, he worked his bottom off to make the deal happen and each slam he got was done in a calendar year. I understand what Deerslam is saying about having the time and money to make it happen but if I am right, Jay was an average guy back then when it didnt take tons of money, just time away from work. p.s. Jay doesnt make any money from being a writer (to my knowledge) and his book "Bucks I Have Taken" has been out of print for years. Couesnut is a very good friend of Jay and I just want to make sure none of us fight or mistake Jay's accomplishments as someone who just paid for his hunts. No offense to anyone, just wanted to jump in here and hopefully keep feathers from being ruffled and keep focused on the subject.....DeerSlam, hope you get your slam soon...........Couesnut, where have you been hiding?.........here's to everyone/anyone who wants to get the B&C deerslam. If I can help out with logistics or give my info on Alaska transporters or whatever, just ask. Alaska is the expensive one because of the airfare and totally unreliable weather you may face.............Allen.......... -

North American Deer Slam
coueshunter replied to Shiras's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
The deer slam was a personal goal of mine and I completed it 4 years ago. I now am working on upgrading my sitka blacky and Rocky mountain muley. Hopefully in October I get a monster muley from Colorado to finish upgrading the muley......Allen Taylor.......p.s. Jay Gates completed it like 6 times......he is a god.......LOL........ -
Lark, will you be able to make it? I have another question for Don Peay but he probably will conveniently be unavailable for the Meeting: He sits on Conservation Force Board of Advisers who is the organization that supported the USO lawsuit. I would like to know if he is still on their board and I also want to know why Tucson SCI supported the USO lawsuit at the expense of all the Arizona sportspeople who opposed it..............Allen.....

GMM, congrats on your deer. I am jealous, I havent went out with a bow before but need to get off my butt and do it, maybe january. I will shoot a spike even because of the respect I have for anyone who gets a coues with a bow. Congrats again on a fine job.......Allen Taylor....... -

1. I can understand mule33 being upset, maybe I dont agree with his belief that he should have the waterhole to himself on labor day weekend with dove hunting going on, but I understand him being upset with deer coming in etc. 2. I also understand that hunting doves coming INTO water is a very normal practice and raining pellets happens even in the best set up dove locations. I also understand that parking next to another vehicle during a dove hunt is normal because there are millions of people out and it is an impossibility to find a spot by yourself at a waterhole close to civilization. I also know that sitting a water hole close to Tucson during the dove season will cause me to be right under where everyone is shooting. MY RAMBLING POINT IS THAT THERE IS NOBODY THAT IS GOING TO WIN IN THIS PARTICULAR SITUATION. we can all say what we should or would have done, but lets just agree that unfortunately two of the people that frequent this site and are fellow brothers in the hunting community had an experience that we cannot fix here on the internet. It will continue to happen with people we do not know out in the field and all of us may learn a lesson or two about empathy, but this type situation will continue to come up with a growing population and cross over of hunts. I dont have the answer because both you guys were hunting legal, ethical and morally within your rights.................Allen...............
