    AZ Strip management changes

This is a very important issue for all of Arizona. Please take a few minutes and send a email response or print out the federal form and fax a response to BLM. This will affect all of our hunting areas from a conservation and fundraising stand point.............Thanks Kevin for the great article and thanks to everyone that stands up and responds.................Allen Taylor...................

    AZ Wildlife news,

I dont disagree, just passing along what AZGFD just got done telling ADA. Basically since only a handfull of people from ADA have been involved over the years, AZGFD thinks that those people speak and not the membership. I dont have an easy answer but the more involved in commission meetings and public gatherings we as members can be, the more AZGFD will listen. ApparenAtly on the last Yuma issue regarding the bowhunting dates for Elk, there was a great turnout from AZ bowhunters Association and only a couple people from ADA so the prevailing thought is ADA and other groups who's members dont show up or speak out are not groups worth listening to. May not seem fair but this is the message being sent out...........Allen..........

    Spot and stalk help

If you are looking for a less expensive bino look into Docter or Fujinon until you can afford one of the top tier. Of course get a good tripod and glass in a grid pattern so you cover all the ground and not overlook areas. Make sure you are glassing where there should be deer and not just in convienient glassing areas. SW facing slopes first thing in the a.m. and NW slopes during bedding times. Dont overlook the flats, they hold alot of overlooked deer. Make sure and dont move too quick when glassing, be patient and really look hard, look for shapes/color/movement and once you start seeing deer, you will only get better and better............Allen Taylor............

    AZ Wildlife news,

I agree that all of us need to attempt to work together and unify behind a common goal. There is a real apathy problem with sportspeople that dont go to commission meetings or support and get involved in a wildlife group. Currently within AZ we are seeing the AZGFD back away from some sportsmen groups like ADA because the commission sees the group as only the board members and not the members. Most times only the board members voice their concerns, go to the meetings etc etc and now the AZGFD will take a stance that may not be right but is understandable, they dont take a group like ADA seriously. There is a major issue with redistribution of coues tags from the december hunts to the october and november hunts and because AZGFD doesnt perceive ADA as much more than a voice from its few board members and not a cohesive group of members, AZGFD is not listening to ADA. Right now is our chance as concerned Arizona sportspeople to join a group like ADA, get involved and voice our opinions via email or in person to AZGFD and not just post our objections on a website..........Allen Taylor..........
  5. We all need to take this very seriously. Make our voices heard if we disagree with this. We must act now and not wait till later, the time is right now. Email, write or call the AZGFD and voice your opinion..........Allen...........
  6. My 13 year old son has much more field experience and credibility than Jennifer. She may be a very good person but to appoint her in this capacity is just wrong. She will be deciding future issues for us sportspeople and without qualifications or a background lending itself to the "hunting/wildlife" heritage, I am concerned that she will be a yes person behind the scenes for Napolitano............Allen Taylor........

Say goodbye to Dec. coues hunts.

I have alot of questions as well. Arizona Deer Association is involved in this but to what extent I am not totally sure. As for SFW I am still not sure who or what is happening with it and its involvement in these crucial political times. I really really think Janet Napolitano is behind alot of the AZGFD plans and her primary goal is revenue generation especially in light of the upcoming re-election campaign. I thought Pete Cimellaro from ADA was stepping in as the SFW person and would be aggressively fighting legislation/political actions that adversely affect wildlife and sportsmen interests. Hopefully ADA and SFW is working behind the scenes on these issues and the recent appointment of an under qualified game commissioner. I suspect Napolitano is quietly making appointments and strategically aligning forces within many departments to strengthen her position which will not necessarily help us hunters..........Allen Taylor........

    Funny 23 gala

Predator, great story and the memories you have will last forever..........I remember using my ford tempo company car years ago to haul a deer out of Montana and to this day 24 years later, I laugh..........congrats on your hunt despite losing a lung...........LOL.................Allen.............
  11. I just got an email and the State of Sonora beginning Dec. 15th will no longer require us to stop at the 21K marker for a vehicle permit if you are staying in Sonora. If you are traveling outside sonora you will still have to get the federal permit. Not only will this save a bunch of time but also the anxiety of dealing with the paperwork and the 27.00 permit. If anyone is interested in more details, I will forward the email to Amanda to post the public announcement.............Allen Taylor...........

    Archery Program

Arizona Deer Association/Chris Denham 480-857-3057 has been involved in a project with the AZGFD like this. Call Chris because there is funding and manpower allocated for this if I am not mistaken. This is a nationwide program that I believe Mathews bows is also involved in. Maybe Amanda can bring this up to the ADA members and place info here about it...........Allen...........

    Washington Blacktail

Buckhorn: I grew up in Olympia chasing those things and man do you have a trophy there. Rarely did we see a knarly non-typical and I personally never shot one so man is this a great buck..............congrats to you and the client............that thing is like shooting a 115" non-typical coues..............Allen Taylor.......

    Best coues rifle ?

I really like my .257 wby mag. Looking at all the ballistics it really seems to be a good match for coues especially long distance with a 115 ballistic tip.........I am like most guys that know accuracy is the key and topped with a leupold 4.5x14 with the premier reticle system out to 600 makes the shots more precise........Allen........

    Mace's Buck

I havent read all the posts on here but the last time I talked with Amanda, she never said this site was a court of law. Back off whoever is throwing punches and smearing this buck and mace. It is a monster of a buck and was posted for us to enjoy. Lets keep this site as an enjoyable place to go and talk hunting and look at great deer..........Allen Taylor............

Seen the fee proposals for 2006?

Brett, I wont argue with you but the plain and simple fact of the lottery for my family the last two years has been 1 cow tag this year, nada for last year, and I do not put my wife or sons in for premium hunts. I put myself in for the october and november whitetail hunts as second through 5 and we have not drawn. Maybe bad luck, but it has happened two years in a row and its hard to explain to the kids........AT.........

Seen the fee proposals for 2006?

BillQ hit the nail on the head. OPPORTUNITY. This state has extremely low opportunity especially on premium hunts. We are wasting away our youth because of the no opportunity and yet all of us want to provide a chance for our kids. AZGFD has within its means to establish almost any Opportunity type hunts for deer/elk for juniors but yet does not seem to listen to the general cry of the public. I dont like not being drawn, but could stomach it alot better if my children could at least draw a tag. Luckily our family drew one cow tag this year and my son Travis shot his first cow. This would have been the second year in a row without any tags in our family. without whining I will just state the facts. I have drawn three early coues hunts and not one other tag in applying for 8 years. The opportunity for myself and my family has been very slim over this time and it is hard to keep your wife/children and yourself pumped up when you dont have the opportunity. I challenge AZGFD to look into creative ways to increase the opportunity for kids or our future will go down the road and this state will only have a few die hard hunters and alot of rich non-resident applicants along with the landowner tags the AZGFD will probably approve in 2006......................my three cents............Allen Taylor.............

    Why take kids hunting?

It is tough to keep kids interest so make it fun for them. Like coues84 said, take goodies, keep close to the truck and when they are done/tired out, go home even if you dont want to. They may want to chase lizards or look at rocks or whatever, but gear the hunt/outdoor event to what is fun for them. Glassing seems to really make it fun for my older son, I have a good set of bino's for him and a tripod and make sure he is comfortable/warm/fed etc.............now that he is a bit older he is more into the game, but now he has girls on his mind so I have to be realistic and not get my feelings hurt if he doesnt want to go quail hunting with me like last night...........LOL................keep taking the kids out and hopefully the AZGFD will figure out how to increase opportunities or our state will lose out..............Allen Taylor..............

    Equivalent Sizes: Whitetail vs. Coues

Here is a different way to look at it. a 100" coues is like a 180" muley, 10" less than lifetime book. This can apply to elk as well. I think a person has got to look at book minimums and give credit where credit is due. I dont know book minimum for regular whitetails, but I have shot a few and have a nice 140" on my wall and it was no where near as difficult to get as the 100" + coues I have. Not to take anything away from any other animal, but a 100" coues is honorable mention or whatever B&C calls it for one year while it would take a 160" or so regular whitetail to measure up to the same.............naturally I am totally partial to coues so thanks for letting me jump on my soapbox............Allen Taylor..........

    My wife's carp deer story.

Red, you and your family did fantastic. I bet you are hooked on helping others out even more than yourself now...........I bet you cant wait to get your daughters a tag. Keep doing things "Wrong" like that............LOL.........congrats............Allen.........

    Why take kids hunting?

Stanley, great job as usual. I couldnt agree with you, AZguide and others more, KIDS are the future and if we dont do something now, then we are screwed here in AZ. I am the proud father of a successful new ELK hunter, my oldest shot his first elk a couple weeks ago in unit 1. It is a monster cow and between the two of us, we couldnt have had a better time. I have pictures and memories that will last a lifetime..........I will try and figure out how to get them off the camera and post them here. I can tell you that for me, it was better than any other hunt and I was more nervous helping Travis out on a cow hunt than any other successful hunt I have helped out on big deer..........what a thrill..........Allen Taylor.............

First hunt for son and me

Like Deerslam said, get him a butt pad and get a cheap tripod so he can use his bino's rested on something stable. A coues hunt is great for kids because you and him will both really enjoy glassing and you dont have to walk all day long. I know of some mistakes I made with my son Travis, I took him into to rough of country and we stayed out too long, so really try and balance your desire to kill something with his short attention span. You and your son will really enjoy the shopping and planning before the hunt and if you have comfortable/warm clothes and a butt pad, he will really get the thrill of the hunt without being bored to death.......Glass your hiny off as long and maybe he will be the one to spot your deer for you.........hope all goes great for you two..............Allen.........
