Great looking bucks..........that area is so much fun to hunt and see God's splendor........there is a ton of deer this year and they look real healthy. This late hunt should be fantastic, the deer are already looking a bit rutty so with the weather and time, I bet the late hunt will be incredible. I really love that second buck picture right up at the edge of the canyon. Great job..............Allen............

Doug, I was there thursday through sunday then had to come back to "reality". I hunted the west side with client Steve Z. and guide Gary Lane. We saw a ton of deer as did the other guys. There were two eastside clients and four west side clients. We camped right up by Jacob lake and the access to either side is pretty quick, so it made for a great camp area. Jim, this year should be great for the late hunt. All the deer look real healthy and there has been good food/water so it should be primed for the late hunt..........AT...........

Got Coues? Here she is...130 inch coues!!!(3x6)
coueshunter replied to Houston Hinton's topic in Shed Hunting
Ernesto can probably explain the Mexican laws, but it is pretty tough to get a permit to import sheds. I was stopped at the border a couple years back and all my sheds were confiscated by the USFWS because I had no permit. They told me I could have bought a deer tag and attached it to "A" (singular) shed with skull and take it accross the border, but without a import permit or tag attached, they had to confiscate the horns. To this day, I have not checked into getting the necessary permits/licenses to bring back sheds, but I am pretty sure it is extensive between our government and the Mexican government........Allen Taylor....... -
Has anyone seen the new Coues video put out by Jay Scott/Darr Colbrun? It has a couple absolute toads on it, a 130" arizona monster. I have the DVD coming to me soon and will write up a "Video Review" and post it here. I believe Amanda will have the video for sale in the webstore here but if not, I will find out where else you can get it..............Allen Taylor.........

2006 Kodiak Alaska Trip
coueshunter replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Great story and pics Doug. Glad your trip went well. You really get a feel for being at the mercy of the wilderness up there dont you? The weather is so unpredictable and the terrain is really tough to hike up through, thats what I appreciated about it on my trip. Glad you had a great time and shot some deer/ducks.......Allen.......... -
New Coues Video
coueshunter replied to coueshunter's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
This is the best Coues DVD I have watched. Some monster bucks, some fantastic shots, ladies and gents both shoot great bucks. The scenery is great, the video quality is really good and there is an absolute monster AZ buck on this. Great warm up for this seasons dreams........congrats to both Jay and Darr who both shot some great bucks. P.S. AZguides brother ( Ty Goodman) is on here with a monster buck for their client as well. Check out this one.............Allen Taylor............ -
I for one have no problem talking about God and especially since it is from him that all our wonderful coues deer and scenery comes from, I think giving him thanks is definitely part of my hunting experience. I dont think anyone on this forum has pressured their views on anyone, and if I have been wrong in my views expressed to someone else, then I publicly apologize. I think we can have this great forum, talk about deer/wildlife and talk about God all at the same time. Thanks Amanda for such a great webiste..........Allen..........

I bring a dark towel to put over my head/bino's to keep the sun out of the sides. It cuts down the glare and is easier than trying to adjust your baseball cap........Allen..........

Casey's first Scalies..
coueshunter replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
good job to both of you. Casey, I had never hunted scalies either so last weekend while scouting for my sons 36a hunt I ran into some and hoofed it back to the truck for the shotgun so I could say I have shot a scalie as well. I like how they hold alot better than the gambels who run like chukkar........LOL........congrats and Scotty, great pictures.............Allen........ -
Help a Coues Newbie in 36B
coueshunter replied to AFscout80's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I would suggest you get yourself a tripod, get set up on a high spot somewhere 1/2 hour before sunrise and glass in a grid type pattern on the S.E. facing slopes first thing in the morning. Pick apart the shadow areas, watch for shapes, colors and movement. These coues are only about 34" at the shoulder so they are small and with their coloring, they blend in very good. Later in the morning when nothings moving, glass the N.W. facing slopes or glass down into likely bedding areas to find a buck bedded. Your water hole would not be a bad area to focus on for deer coming into during midday. Hunt all day long and glass, dont hike all over and you should be able to find a buck and stalk in on him........hope you do well............Allen....... -
Wyoming antelope hunt(all 22 minutes of it)
coueshunter replied to fatfootdoc's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
fatfoot: fantastic job especially taking your son. Antelope hunts are the best for young kids. You can buy over the counter left over doe tags in WY for around 50.00. The scenery and fun while seeing alot of animals keeps the kids excited.........glad your new toy worked great. That is a fun/flat shooting gun...........AT............... -
New Coues Video
coueshunter replied to coueshunter's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Jay just sent me a picture of his elk from this year and man what a hog. I am really looking forward to getting this coues video and seeing the monster bucks they have on it. You can get the video from the CW store here............dont know the price yet, but since I have till November to chase coues with my son's tag, I have idle time I need to fill up with pictures of monster bucks..........LOL............Allen.......... -
Tell your son congratulations...........it is real nice to get kids pictures up especially in a magazine like this and on a website, what a thrill for the kids to get some positive reinforcement for a sport we want them to love.............Allen.........

How early should hunt camp be setup?
coueshunter replied to scoutm's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I like to be set up for "my hunts" meaning when I have a tag 2 days before the hunt. I like to make sure I have everything set up and time to look around one full day before the hunt to confirm if the deer/elk are still doing what they have been doing, and what extra influence the other hunters/campers/atv riders may have on my plans...........Allen....... -
I am real surprised/pleased at the cost. I just called Sportsmans warehouse and they are 400.00. This is really a great deal and it sure is alot better than planning on spending 1200.00 for a Montana or Davis tent. I have the Cabelas tent already but would have bought this one in a heartbeat. Sounds like a great tent..........Allen.....

I am going stir crazy as well. this past saturday I scouted down in 36a for my sons junior hunt in November. This next wednsday I leave for the Kaibab for the early hunt to help out and cant wait. Supposedly some snow up on the Kaibab and should be a great year for monster bucks. When I was scouting, saw alot of coues, no monsters but it was good to get out and look around. What unit do you guys have? Hope you shoot some monsters............Allen...........

I have the Alanak 12x20 and so far it has been real nice. It sets up easy, handles alot of wind (colorado last year 40 miles per hour) and airs out real good during the day with the window/bug screens. I like the zip out floor where the stove goes. Only downside is the tent sweats in rainy weather more than a canvas tent..........Allen......

North to Alaska
coueshunter replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Doug, I hope you have the best time/hunt of your life. It is absolutely one of the best most beautiful places on this planet. You will see God's work's/wonders in so many things. Hope you shoot a monster and put a fantastic slide show together for all of us to see.............have a great time........Allen........ -
I dont think I will be going but if time permits and my wife is o.k. with it, I may head down in January. I just received the o.k. to go up to the Kaibab for the october hunt so at least I will be out seeing some monster mulies this year. As for coues, I am keeping my hopes up that I do go down and guide or help in Mexico in January..........hope everyone that goes does real well............Allen...........

Austin, great job. Glad all the hunts worked out and you shot some real nice animals.........congrats to your proud pappa as well, he is a real killer. Keep learning from him.................Allen...........

recoil is subjective, but my opinion would be it is not much more than the .243 and less than the 7mm. With a rubber recoil pad, this is a great gun for women, kids and men. It has the killing power (ft pounds) out at the ranges like 400 yards that the .243, 6mm, 7mm-08 may not have. Nothing wrong with the other calibers, it just seems the .257 wby mag combines all the right things into this catrtidge.........Allen.......
