If he has hunted there for a few years, then he broke one of his own rules and that is to scout the ranch long before he leases it up or buys the tags. He knows this already, but it is too late for him. He needed to scout this ranch and confirm "it hasnt been hunted" before he takes his clients there. Every year there always is alot of ranches that " havent been hunted" that pop up. This is a way for the tags to sell faster and for more money sometimes because people think they will walk on the ranch and kill a monster. It always pays to scout your ranch before the hunt if possible...............Allen.............

Any outfitter that is "0-6" in mexico on coues either has: 1. a shot out ranch, 2. bad shots as clients 3. Very high expectations of the clients or 4. Shouldnt be an outfitter because he/she doesnt know how to find deer. I would find it really hard to believe there is anything different in Mexico this year versus the last years that would make it any more difficult to find deer.......Allen........

Fantastic job.......I really like to see Women and kids out, especially when they fill their tag...........congratulations..............Allen......... -
I have heard bad things about leupolds so I went with a Leica 700. Hope I didnt make a wrong decision. I really wanted the new small 1200 but couldnt afford the 600.00 Cabela's sent me a 20.00 gift certificate and the range finder was on sale for 349.00 so I figure 329.00 for a Leica was a good deal...........Allen...........

Phil, thanks for letting us enjoy your hunt.........congrats on such a great buck and great story.........these little deer are so very addictive...............Allen..........

Just move straight towards him till you are in the 300 - 350 yard range and shoot him. Wind is in your favor and as long as you stay around 300 yards away, his comfort zone is not infringed upon and he shouldnt spook. If the cholla is still in the way or you dont have a good shot due to him being bedded, wait him out. He will stand up soon being on the south facing slope, the sun is on him and he will have to re-bed soon.........Allen Taylor..........

New Kaibab Mule Deer DVD
coueshunter replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
This DVD is really something you should buy and review. The Kaibab is such a monsterous unit and the way to hunt it is dependant on the weather, time of year, herd stability etc etc etc and Duwane has put years of time up there, he really is the expert regarding the Kaibab. Just to figure out some of the tactics and areas of the unit, whether its the East side or West side, you will spend more in a tank of gas than this DVD. I know that every time I am fortunate enough to be invited to Duwanes camps, I learn a ton of new info. This DVD is packed with good tips...............Allen Taylor........ -
Glad your hunt was a success. The picture didnt show up, but man can I relate to you in how proud you are of your wife. Hope you both have continued luck in drawing tags and hunting together...........Allen Taylor..

Congrats to both of you.........you guys need to write up a story about the "Father/Son Deer". I think it would be a great story and maybe Tony Mandile could hook you up in Rocky Mountain Game & Fish. Anyway, great job to you both..............Allen..........

Grim, when I bought my MarkV from walmart, I dont think weatherby even made a vanguard in the .257 caliber. But yes, I am talking the Mark V from walmart is actually quite reasonable with the black sythentic stock. I paid somewhere around 700.00 for it about 5 years ago. Walmart doesnt stock it, but if the person behind the counter pulls out the special order book, you can order one..............Allen.....

There will be another one out very soon. I know Jay is down in Mexico or just got back and they will have that footage as well as some early season AZ footage. This first Extreme coues is a great DVD and I expect the next one to be even better..........Allen......

great looking buck. Especially shot with the "brush gun". I know what you are talking about, I grew up in Olympia, WA. and hunted blacktails in the jungle my whole life until I moved around the country starting in 1988. It was a real eye opener to hunt open country and glass for animals. Great looking buck you should be very proud of........congrats............Allen........

Ernesto, the .257 weatherby in the Mark V is not super expensive. I bought mine from walmart 6 years ago or so and only paid somewhere around 700.00 for it..........I would love to have the superbig game master but if you want to lug around the extra weight like I do, you can get into this gun for not alot more than other guns cost............Allen.......

I use the factory loaded 115 ballistic tips. If I was to reload, I think I would look into Hornady's sst ammo......Let me know what happens with the accubonds if you use them..........thanks.........Allen........

Matty: ADA is the old Arizona Mule Deer Foundation, not really a "new" organization. As to AZ SFW, I believe the group is up and running, but seems to keep a really low profile. This is total speculation, but I believe Pete Cimellaro has headed it up and they have a couple other people on the payroll. Last time I looked, there still wasnt a mission statement on SFW's website for the AZ SFW. Anyway, the general gist of this discussion is to join a group that is active in AZ politics that can and will affect our hunting future. Look into whichever one you think will do the best for you and your interests regarding wildlife and if you can, donate time & energy into the organization.............Allen........

I personally believe that belonging to an AZ organization is the key. MDF, RMEF, SFW, SCI, NRA etc are all great, but for local issues, many times these more "national" organizations seem to bow to their own political pressures and dont step in when needed. I am not saying all the time, but during the USO fiasco it was real evident that most of the national organizations didnt want to upset the apple cart so they stayed pretty quiet. I would look into ADA or AZ elk foundation and volunteer to help out. Many people just send their 25.00 in as annual dues but dont realize that volunteers to sit on committees and go to functions are much more important than the 25.00.........many many guys/gals who volunteer and sit on these boards get burned out and replacements are very welcomed...........Allen Taylor......

I think all of us hunters/outdoorspeople are pretty much in agreement that when "politics" is involved in wildlife management, something bad happens to both the wildlife and us. Generally it would be great to not have politics involved, but the fact of this world is that there are so many competing interests that we as hunters will need to involve more "politicians/lobbyists" in our camp or we will continue to lose out on opportunity and quality. I dislike the "politics" but understand if we dont involve conservation groups that have strong "political" foundations, we will eventually lose out to special interest groups like PETA..........Our game managers are under great pressures to "increase opportunity" which means increasing revenues (at the expense of wildlife) our commissioners are under great pressure to institute "landowner tags" which is bad for wildlife and the hunters, and our Governor is always looking for a way to increase "popularity" which increases voter base, so she has gone with the decisions that best support her and her campaign future. I agree with Desertbull, we needed to change our Governor. Since this cant happen, we need to align ourselves with a group that has political clout to ensure that our wildlife is managed correctly and our hunting future is enhanced.........Allen........

Scott, once again, beautiful pictures and the story to go with it..........sounds like you guys had a great time and like everyone else said, the Ram/hereford cross breed is HUGE........thanks........Allen......

Deerslam, thanks for the great pictures. Like azpackhorse, I spent all my early years hunting columbia blacktails. I was born/raised in Olympia, WA. and hunted them till I was 26 years old then moved all over the country. I love blacktails and it is really hard to kill a monster buck especially if you are hunting brush country............thanks again...........Allen......

Great job, looks like you guys had a great hunt..........Allen.....
