I believe in Duwane's coues deer book he has a chapter on glassing. In the Kaibab muley book he talks about it as well. His glassing DVD is worth the money, but the best money spent is doing his glassing class. I think reading is good, but actual in the field application really solidifies it for you.................Allen Taylor...........

Chris, when do the magazines come out? I have been excited to get the next issue and keep checking the mail box...............if anyone knows, let me know. My Eastmans came...............Allen Taylor.......

This is a very broad topic so I will just add one thing for starters: Recruitment/Retention is best started with Jr. hunters. That being said, I think the dept. should take extra time with Jr. applications to ensure they are filled out properly and if not, one/two phone calls to make corrections before rejecting the application. From personal experience, just rejecting the application causes "loss of opportunity" for the kids and there are only so many years you have as a parent to get them interested in the outdoors before you lose them.........Allen Taylor........

Like Doug and TLH I have all the Swarovski glass but it took some time to save for it. I bought a pair of the Minox 10x42 from cameraland for my youngest son and they are a really good pair for the price. Minox makes good glass and for a starter set, they have very affordable bino's. The 15x58 doug is selling for 550.00 is a great deal..............Allen Taylor.........

Actually you are comparing apples to oranges. The Zeiss 15x45's are fantastic glass, I have used them. They do not take the place of 15x56 on a tripod, they arent the same animal. The minox or Swarovski's 15x56 15x58 have a much wider field of view and are the type for long distance tripod glassing. The 15x45 Zeiss are great around your neck or on a tripod like Swarovski's 10x42's. I like the Zeiss better than the 10x42's because you have 5 more power and they weigh the same as swaro 10x42. This is a preference thing, but in terms of actual performance, 15x45 vs 15x56 are two different tools............Allen......

Duwane Adams glassing class
coueshunter replied to yumabowhunter's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Until you glass with Duwane, you dont know what your "real skill level" is. I am glad you spent the time, it will pay off...........As for the type of glass, go with what you have and see how you perform. Minox makes a good pair, Fujinon makes decent glass, it isnt just the glass, its how you understand where to look and how to look. You will eventually upgrade to Zeiss, Swarovski, Leica at some point, but you dont have to start with it. Learning how to glass/where to glass first is the key. Then the premium glass will enhance your learned ability. It took me a few years to afford all the glass, but now i wouldnt trade them for anything. If you cant find the deer, you wont kill it. I would downgrade my guns to upgrade my bino's..............Allen Taylor.............. -
This is a volatile subject for some (myself included). Let me just start off with the AZGFD's philosophy of "Recruitment/Retention". I have a wife and two sons who want to hunt and it is hard to explain to them why they cant get a tag. I know for myself that I must wait for my premium tag but for them on regular hunts, it is hard to explain why they dont draw. This issue will never go away, there are much worse formats than AZGFD's...........I believe in the draw, but wonder at times the "randomness" of it all. There are always people drawing the premium units with 1-3 bonus points. Is it a far reach to ask the AZGFD to place some of the premium units "off limits" to non-residents? I know of a few states that manage in that way, and it would free up tags for the residents who understand waiting for premium tags. It is hard to swallow seeing a non-resident with two bonus points put in a party application and draw unit 1...............Allen..

Finally got through. I have 10 points ---- no tag My wife 5 points ---- no tag my oldest son 5 points ---- no tag my youngest 1 point --- lucky and drew a jr. cow tag At least we have one hunt this year..............Allen............

I personally have no problem with the draw/bonus point system we have. I DO HAVE A PROBLEM with each and every year the AZGFD has some technical problem where just the simple fact of trying to find out if you drew turns into a very time intensive search. I know that there are simple ways for AZGFD to solve this ongoing problem. You can read through this site and others where people have tried for hours just to get through on the phone. each year going back a few, there are always problems. Either the "online company" messed up or "the volume of calls crashed the system". And after the problem, AZGFD tells you what they are doing to "Ensure this wont happen" again. At some point they need to actually address a problem and fix it. I think they have forgotten that we are their customers and they have our money for months without interest, waiting patiently for the results. Thanks for letting me vent. p.s. i have been trying since early yesterday and cant get through. I have 11 bonus points for Elk and 8 for Antelope. my whole family hopes to draw something this year, we have been tagless for 4 years................Allen..........

Anyone guiding on State Trust land needs a $300.00 permit, so check into it so you dont get a fine.........Allen...........

I have been tagless for the last six years so I took up archery last year. It was a no brainer to shoot the 2x3 I did last year ( being my first coues with a bow). I hope I draw a tag this year for rifle, but with or without a rifle tag this year, my goal is to kill a 90" plus with my bow. If I draw a tag, then I will pass all bow season unless its a big buck..........Longwinded answer......Allen.......

I tried it and it did not work for me, the two doublers when attached were too far apart to get both lined up to my eyes.

Gary, I have went through very similar situations in my life. Rembrant hit it on the head, once we make God our #1 passion, pursue him like we used to for hunting, all the other things fall into place. The best thing I have found in my life is to prioritize with God as #1, wife #2, kids #3, work #4 and me last. I cant explain it, but I have found peace, passion and success. I still hunt alot, I still get to do things for myself, but with God as my #1 priority, things just work out better.............my family and I will continue to pray for you............Allen Taylor..............

I think there are many many people to thank in this equation. ADA has fought with this issue for many years, went to numerous commission meetings etc. etc... Pete Cimellaro, Kevin Harris, Mark Bool are names that pop in my head over the last 10 years who have put countless hours of meeting and re-hashing this issue. I am upset that someone like Todd Buck who spends so much time up there could not have been more of a help in this issue years ago. I believe he is still the game manager for that unit. Anyway, a great big thanks to all involved in this. It will really help the deer and the sportsmen to correctly manage this great area................Allen.........
