My buddy Zeus.
Idahocoueshunter replied to COOSEFAN's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I lost my hunting companion of 14 years last summer. I spent the next few months looking for her in her usual haunts, thinking I had to feed her or having her load up in the pickup. There a part of the family and it just takes time. Sorry. Craig. -
I won't beat a dead horse. Scottyboy was right, we all have an opinion and we're each sure its the right one. We all know in our hearts what is right and wrong, legal or illegal, moral or not, but its us that have to deal with that on a personal basis. Hunters of all types sould stick together to fight the anti hunters, who are just looking forus to drop our guard, fighting among ourselves, and find some fault manipulate. To each his own. Craig.

WKLMAN, I like your way of thinking. My uncle hunted Coues his whole life, until moving to Texas. He thought, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do". He leased a ranch, feeder, and blind, the whole nine yards. He hated it. Even stove up as he was, he took vacation and paid the out of state fees and hunted Coues. Not for the meat or the trophy, but for the satisfacton of the hunt and the company of good friends with similar values. Would I shoot a a 130 B&C, non typical with a drop tine under a feeder? No. First of all I doubt B&C would consider shooting under a feeder fair chase, and second of all I wouldn't be in that situation. I have relatives in Texas who bait. They tell me they have to bait to keep the deer on their property. The feed fatten and harvest. Thats great for them, but it's not for me. I hate to get into the great bait debate, because some prefere it, but just because its legal, dosen't make it right. Craig.

I think the main reason we all hunt Coues, is for the sport. I find nothing sporting about shooting a baited deer. Glassing until your eyes bleed, checking out the next canyon before dark despite aching feet, coming in after dark. Thats what I love about Coues hunting. I see the outdoor shows with "hunters" hunkered in a blind around a feeder, waiting until the time the feeder goes off to attract deer used to the sound. It would be like shooting one of Pavlovs dogs. Not for me. Craig.

What do you think this buck scores?

I'm thinking 109. Nice mount-great eyeguards. -
Any moisture in Cochise County? Neighbor says its been pretty slim down there. Updates welcome!! Craig.

I'd pay $20.00 for a lion tag. Several years ago, We found 8 lion killed bucks in just a couple days of hunting. I heard a lion last year. Locals say that lion were up. I would rather gamble on not using a lion tag, than needing one and not having it. Craig.

I agree!! Not only on my favorite sites, but my email is crammed full of that garbage. Guess my spam blocker is antiquated. Craig. -
Well sitting up here in central Idaho, with huge snow flakes adding to the six inches already on the ground, got me thinking about Christmas and my wish list. Swarovski spotting scope Crooked horn shooting sticks Sheath for my grandfathers kinfe (Marbles) Shoulder mount for my 2005 Coues Permit for next year and good health to do it all again next November. How about yours? Merry Christmas and God bless. Craig.

More Mearns Pics
Idahocoueshunter replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Mearns are one quail species that I have not had the pleasure of hunting yet. Saw some this last year Coues hunting, but season wasn't open yet. We were in pretty margional Mearns country anyway. One of these years I will make a point of hitting the season and getting one to mount. Nice pictures! Craig -
I asked my kids how they feel about this. They all laughed, while helping themselves to another slice of venison roast. These people are nut cases. I see where the NRA is going to debate PETA on television. Hope Wayne LaPierre sends them packing. Craig

Don't write bad checks...
Idahocoueshunter replied to DesertBull's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I don't think just bouncing a check would be a felony. If that were the case, 95% of America would be wearing stripes. He probably wrote a check on a closed account or a business account for private purposes. Each state has its own laws reguarding fradulent check writing. Craig. -
Cochise county hunts
Idahocoueshunter replied to creed_az_88's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
We did well, also in 30A. I killed one (green score) around 109 gross. My dad killed one in the mid 80's and my cousin's was around 74. All three points. I hope to get pictures entered on this site soon. Craig. -

Nice prayer, Amen! -
500 wolves is a pretty conservative number, I think. In central Idaho I hear of wolf sightings on a weekly basis. Those numbers are of the documented packs, not of the rogue packs showing up. We have been getting reports of Idaho wolves showing up in Oregon, Washington, and Utah. I know of several packs that were as of late, completely undocumented. My theory is that the Alpha male and female no longer do all the breeding. Pups grow up and go off and start their own packs, in normally wolf free areas. Wolves, don't get me started. Craig

whats the funniest thing thats happened
Idahocoueshunter replied to ultramag's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
My dad and I were hunting a south facing ridge after a significant snow storm. We had glassed most of the morning and my backside was pretty stiff and sore from sitting on the only dry rock in the country. We were in the process of moving to a new glassing location up the ridge. I had one hand in my pocket, and my rifle slug over my right shoulder. I stepped on a snow covered rock and my boot slipped and then got wedged in a crack in the rock. I started to lose my balance, so I grabbed for a nearby limb, which promptly broke off in my hand. I then started to look for a safe place to fall, but all there was to fall into was a huge prickly pear cactus. My Levi jacket took alot of the brunt, but camo pants don't repel needles well. With my father picking spines from my back end with his Leatherman, I was thinking how lucky I was that we were the only ones in the canyon. I was wrong! On the opposite ridge I heard a lone shot. I can only imagine what he thought as he was glassing our ridge with his spotting scope. You'd think, living in Idaho I would know how to walk in snow. Craig. -
I've been an Idaho State Policeman for 20 years, mostly as a resident position near Hells Canyon. I live in a town of about 100 people and have a patrol area of about 250 miles which includes the Salmon and Snake rivers and borders the wilderness area. Craig.

I did get a new day pack with a hydration system. I bought a new Leupold scope after a a fiasco with a 28 inch mulie here in Idaho. Other than that its the same old 6mm, Georgia boots, Zeiss binoculars and hand loads. -

Does anyone know if south east Arizona, in the unit 29 and 30A, got any moisture. I see on the weather channel that it's cloudy for days at a time, but nothing on actual precipitation. It would be nice to get a little late summer moisture before my November hunt. Craig. -
