Looks like Monique's oryx skull came out great.
  4. Just got back from the trip to Texas that the Safari Club members from Tucson sponsored for youth who have already passed their hunter education class but had not taken any big game animals. The trip was arranged by Scott Kendrix ( Kilimajaro ) who also served as mentor, guide and taxidermist-in-residence. He was assisted by Bobby and Michael Boido, Shane Standley, Chuck Rosier and Brian Groseclose. We left Tucson at 7:30 Wednesday night for the 12 hour drive, arriving at our destination near Mertzon, TX. We had the use of a ranch and hunting lodge for the duration of our stay, along with the ability to hunt another smaller property about 20 minutes away. After unloading and having some lunch after going over the ground rules for the hunts, since we would be hunting out of blinds near feeders, which was something new for all the kids to learn about. There were a number of exotic species on the properties as well and the native whitetail, turkeys and feral hogs. The parents and guides all made sure that the kids only took one of the species that was available which was Iranian Red sheep, Axis deer, Sika deer, fallow deer and hogs, and not one of the we could not shoot like blackbuck, whitetail and turkey. Thursday afternoon and Friday were very windy and the animals were not cooperative, with only 1 young lady taking a red sheep on Friday. Everybody was seeing plenty of animals, but mostly the ones that could not be shot or they were standing in thick cover not offering a shot. Saturday morning was my son Kolin's turn at the distant property, where some whitetail and black buck came in 10 minutes after the truck dropped us off. We did not see anything until the truck came to pick us up, but on the drive out we came across a small group of red sheep with a shooter ewe running with 4 rams. We maneuvered ahead of them and set up, where Kolin made a perfect shot through the ribs at 150 yards, harvesting his first big game animal. After lunch and time running short, the guides stepped up the game and managed to harvest three more animals with the kids, including a Sika deer and a Scimitar horned oryx for one lucky young lady. The kids who came were my son Kolin Tersey, Andy Behrens ,Ryan Ballis, Josh, Trey Trejo, Ryan Lara, Sawyer Groseclose, and Monique Montano. Thanks to the very hard work of Scott Kendrix, four people got their first big game. Andy and Monique were with my son when he got his sheep, and Monique later took an Oryx. All of the kids that harvested a trophy did it with one shot each.

    Weird deaths!

While scouting for deer several years ago, we stopped at a water trough where someone had removed the escape ramp and found 21 dead skunks floating in the little bit of water in the bottom of the tank.

    WTB wall tent

I have had my Alaknak for almost 20 years, never had it blow down or leak. It worked just fine in the blizzard on the Jr's elk hunt in the white mountains this fall with 3 inches of snow and 30 mile an hour winds.

    Macho B Jr. sighting!!!

"Four of the last five confirmed jaguar sightings in Arizona have been reported by hunters" At least the Phoenix papers are willing to report this little fact. No mention of it in the Red Star.

Can not get GPS to match Topo map cordenance

There is about a 200 yard difference between NAD 27 and the WGS 83 and 84 systems. If you match the systems between the two you should be good to go.

    Bucks and

Looks like a coues, it has a small metatarsal gland on the inside of the back leg. The one on the big buck is definitely larger in relation to the length of that part of the leg.

    Boquillas Ranch Boundaries

Try going to the Arizona State Land Department website and go to the map viewer. http://sco.az.gov/website/parcels/viewer.htm Once you have the viewer up, you have to turn on the Grazing leases by clicking the box on the lower right side and then zoom in on the area. Ranch boundaries show up as gold lines. You can play with the size of the view and figure out where the boundaries are at that you are concerned about.

My daughter's first Elk! Bittersweet cow

Congratulations to Kaitlyn on a tough hunt and making the right decision on the elk. Looks like you have a real trooper there to put in the miles in the snow and cold. I remember seeing her at camp and wondering if she connected on an elk.

    pictures

If you are using Windows, go to start-all programs- accessories- paint and open the picture up in paint. Then all you have to do is "stretch" it to 50 or 40% and save it. It should be small enough to load then.
  21. We were up by Greens peak this last weekend and the areas with spruce and fir trees were loaded with the smaller red squirrels. If we were not elk hunting, we would have limited out every day.

    Unit 1 youth elk camp

Tag soup for us this year, but I think all of the other kids in the camp put on by Youth Outdoor Unlimited tagged out. No lack of opportunity in the area we were in and Kolin missed two shots at what turned out to be quite a bit farther than we originally estimated. After the 3 inches of snow melted the bulls in our area started bugling again and made it easy to find them, but not easy to get a shot at a standing elk.

    AZGFD Archaeologist???

rthrbhntng is correct, the hired the archy to do their own clearances. They not only save on time to get the clearances done, but staff are cheaper than contracting it out like they have been doing.
  24. I took my son up to Unit one to scout for his upcoming youth hunt and camped out with some friends that were trying to fill their archery bull tags. We took Kolin's bow with him just to get some practice in and have something to do in the middle of the day when the elk were bedded down. One of the guys mentioned that it was archery squirrel season and the guys proceeded to educate him about the use of judo points for small game hunting. They even loaned him some a judo point and a blunt. After a little practice on the target blocks, the hunt was on when ever one of the little rascals came down a tree anywhere near camp. After many misses, each getting closer and closer to the target, he finally scored with a perfect head shot at about 10 yards. This was not only his first squirrel, but his first game harvested with a bow. Happy hunter Looking for another one Now that is a trophy tail
