Interesting Conclusion
NRS replied to Browning'sCustomMeat's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
SBD...Sorry I did not pick up on the 5 year time scale in the article. RR ... thanks for cleaning up my math errors. The real point is that gun control does not solve the problems with gun deaths and the media will distort what ever information they can find to suit their preconceived notions of what the truth should be. As my statistics teacher used to say " Figures don't lie, but lairs can figure". I think there is also a book out by that title. -
If that rabbit and the javalina are any indication, you live in a rough neighborhood.

It kind of looks like a bobcat with the head on the right side with the white tips of the ears and the black tip of the tail on the left side.

Interesting Conclusion
NRS replied to Browning'sCustomMeat's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
According to that report, the civilian deaths by "small arms fire" comes out to 42 per 100,000, which is still safer than Washing DC. (Population of 28,221,180 divided by 100,000 equals 282.21 groups of 100,000. 11,877 civilian deaths divided by 282 equals 42/100,000) -
Friend of mine was using one to call varmits from a couple of weeks ago. He had a yote come in in a minute and dropped it, then kept calling. had a bobcat walk by him on the ladder and go sniff the dead dog after 10 minutes of calling. He is sold on them as "tree stands for the desert".

Sierra Club wants lion tag to auction
NRS replied to billrquimby's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Here is an article out of the Arizona Daily Star that talks about lions today. http://www.azstarnet.com/allheadlines/299737 maybe the Sierra Club will replace the kids pets and petting zoo because the poor misguided, healthy lion took up residence at their house. -
We probably still have time to get some sort of contest going

I was checking one last week and found a small muley buck that looked like a lion had killed it. The water had a ton of fresh tracks from all sort of critters. You will never know until you check them what you will find.

Definitely looks like it is human, most larger mammals have a more elongated skull. The human tooth is unique in shape if I remember my biology correctly, and would be the only thing with a tooth shaped like those in the pictures. Hopefully the deputies will get an archaeologist out there with them tomorrow to assess the age of the site. The depth reminds me of the depth that the mammoth kill sites in the San Pedro valley are buried, and those are about 11,000 years old. Most more recent native burials are more shallow than that.

Definitely let the archaeologist for that area know. there was one that someone found that turned out to be unique in that it was 2 "enemy" that had been caught and tortured and had over 100 arrowheads in their bodies. If it had not been professionally excavated, all of that information would have been lost.

Thanks, but although I agree completely with it, the comment you're quoting was CMC's. Bill Quimby Sorry for the mis-attribution Bill Thanks for catching that. -
Sierra Club wants lion tag to auction
NRS replied to billrquimby's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I think Bill Quimby hit the nail on the head. "My bigger concern is if they sold the tag and funds go to the department the voice they have with how the dollars are spent. This would then put them at the table with the rest of the organizations that brought funds to the table, i.e. they can lay claim to funding of the department and in turn looking to have a much louder voice. This is bad." -
So do military surplus laundry bags. last time I bought some it was 4/ $5.oo.

Baboquivari- Elk Horn Fire Effect?
NRS replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
If you go to this site http://gacc.nifc.gov/swcc/predictive/intelligence/intelligence.htm and go down on the lower left side you will find a link "Fire Detection Using Google Earth". If you have Google Earth, you can open this link and zoom in on the area and see roughly where the fire has burned. -
Talked to one of the guys from the office that was sown there Sunday, and Brown Canyon did get burned on sides of the canyon, should be easier to get around in there for a few years anyway.

Baboquivari- Elk Horn Fire Effect?
NRS replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
RR - the fire is burning fairly slowly and mainly making small runs and not doing much damage. I suspect that the deer that are there are just moving around the active fire areas and will stay in the vicinity and enjoy the fresh green vegetation when the summer rains start. The Fish and Wildlife service had been planning on doing a prescribed burn in the area this week to rejuvenate the vegetation anyway. This fire just saved them some costs associated with a prescribed burn and covered a much larger area. -
Down there it is not the farms that give the locals the munchies, it is the burlap wrapped bales that you need to worry about burning up
-
I was out by Kearny a couple of weeks ago and saw 2 of them about 5 minutes apart.
-
It is the Elk Horn fire. If you look at the Tucson satellite photo on the Tucson weather service page, you can see the smoke coming right into town. They are mainly letting it do its thing in the mountains and clean out the old dead material and do not think it will be contained until next weekend.

Are the Southern Units Really That Dangerous?
