I'm not big on public venting concerning any issues I may have, but I just need a place to rant right about now so I don't take it out on the helpless Regional Game and Fish Department workers. After filling out my online apps for the spring hunts I printed out my license and noticed it would expire on 10/12/2015. I thought this must be a mess up in their system so I called the Regional Department in Tucson. Both women I spoke to said they were getting a large volume of calls with the same complaints of people stating they thought they would need a valid license for that time of the hunt but missed the section in the regs reading you only needed a current license then needed a different license the time the hunt took place. WHAT? This is a SIMPLIFICATION of the license program. Whose wet dream was this great idea. Did they not see the problem in this transition. If so, why in the heck did they not take the extra step in the online software and arrange it where it did not allow you to buy a new license if your current license was valid. They put it all on the consumers shoulders and assumed everyone read the regs front to back before filling out their apps. The last thing I wanted to hear after getting transferred twice at the Game and Fish office was " we totally agree with you but our hands are tied, you will need to take it up with the commission at one of the regional meetings". I know there are people on here that defend the actions of the Game and Fish Department but it seems like time and time again they continue to fail in their attempts. If they were in any other position, excluding government, they would have all been fired over these countless mishandlings.

2014 Muzzleloader Bull (Updated with story)
massamino replied to Little Creek Calls's topic in Elk Hunting
Great bull! What was your load recipe and cleaning process between shots? Fouling shot first? Maximum range and zero range? Bullet drop? Any info will help. I have a NM muzzy mule deer hunt and I would appreciate a load to try out. BTW I have an older .50 cal TC Black Diamond so Blackhorn 209 is not an option(that bites). I have a bunch of T7 pellets and 245 powerbelts and 250 hornady SST. -
There is only one place I would spend my time glassing if I were you. EXACTLY the area you found that dead-head in your avatar. There must be some serious minerals(steroids) in that areas soil. All joking aside, follow the info that has been posted and you can't go wrong. Keep it simple,my motto is sun in your face-your in the right place! That works a high percentage of the time in AZ. Good luck.

Is there a way to access my online application if I didn't make a copy at the time of submission (lesson learned!!)? I never have put in for a cow hunt and ended up drawing one of the twenty five cow tags in 6A during the early archery season. My first choice was 6A bull early archery. The lady at Game and Fish was little help. If it was a paper app, I would say I must have made a mistake transferring the numbers but the online system is obvious with the unit, date, and gender clearly visible. I'm not saying there is no chance I messed up but I am more than careful when filling out hunt numbers and I really need to see my app to believe I made such a huge mistake and lost 8 years worth of bonus points for a cow tag.

Numbers matched up (WHAT AN IDIOT)!! Thanks for the info guys. Looks like I'll be giving out jerky for Christmas this year!! Again,WHAT AN IDIOT!!!

That will be the last time I ignore making a copy of the receipt. Without it, it comes down to your word against the Game and Fish and we all know how that works. What a roller coaster of emotion- going from I definitely drew a bull tag, but which one to -WHAT THE FILTH FLARRING FILTH!!!!!! Guess I'll just make the best of it and try not to cry much as giant bulls walk in front of me as I try to beat them to the cows.

And then chase it with a Shirley Temple

Did any other CWT members get a chance to see the mule deer in the back of the G&F truck on Stoneman Lake road on Sunday? That was a trophy deer and it was a shame it was poached. That would have made a great trophy for someone. I would take a rough guess at 180+ and that is probably low balling. I wish I would have taken a pic. It seemed like the officers were pretty busy with citations and had their trucks full of antlers.
-
Most of the antlers showing from the trucks were elk with a couple of very large mule deer mixed in. I don't know the specifics on the citations and the exact number of animals but that was the largest checkpoint I had ever seen. The G&F were not playing around and it looked like they had some success catching poachers.

That bull has some great color to him. Awesome! I hope to be hunting and going strong at that age.Great to see!

I just picked up a new High Tech Specialties stock on ebay for my 7MM rem mag Weatherby Vanguard. I currently have a Knoxx Axiom UL stock on that I will be taking off if anyone is interested for $150 +ship. My reason for posting is to ask any of you that might have run across one of these stocks in the past. I know the are inletted but require bedding, pad, and paint. I'm up for the extra work but it will be the first time with custom stock work of any kind. I was planning on using marine tex for the epoxy. Any advice or tips would be a great help. If all else fails, what do you think the complete finish work on this project would be if I took it to a gunsmith?

I plan on heading to 6A for the youth turkey hunt this weekend with my daughter. Has anyone heard toms while out shed hunting? The birds are ready to go down here in southern AZ but I really don't know what to expect up north. This cold front coming in the next couple of days could make it tough. Does anyone know if the forest roads are still closed? . We have about a four hour drive and I wanted to make sure it would be worth the trip. I have seen turkey in the unit during the elk hunts but I don't know if those areas I'm familiar with will be open to travel.

DIY Fiberglass Stock Bedding
massamino replied to massamino's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
The stock is fiberglass with a foam core to cut down on the weight. The maker uses them on his custom builds that go for over 12k$ I believe it is comparable to a Manners minus the finishing work. -
Thanks for the advice guys. My daughter has never been to 6A and I can't wait to show her my favorite area to hunt in AZ. She was fortunate enough to draw a rifle bull tag for next season so this ought to get the juices flowing for the November hunt. It's a long way away from elk season but we have been purchasing gear for her and I have modified my 30-06 Remington Sportsmen 78 to fit her LOP. She has a very small frame and I'm trying to make it as comfortable as possible for her in case she gets the opportunity at her first elk. Growing up in PA, I love chasing turkey in NM and AZ during the spring. Great time to get to know an area and pick up some bone. Good luck to all the junior hunter this weekend! Get you some of those THUNDER CHICKENS!

I'll take them for $1400!

Talley One-Piece Scope Mount: Feedback
massamino replied to Airbusdriver's topic in Optics and tripods
The deadnutz one piece aluminum systems are awesome for the price. I put one on my Vanguard and it is the best mounting system I have dealt with. Rock solid and light weight! -
You could put a black, blue, or even a fore skin on this site. I would still appreciate all the hard work that is put into running it. It's great to have a place to go and see what is happening around the state when it comes to everything hunting related. Some people are to dang picky it seems sometimes. Keep up the great work Amanda!

Can't ask for much more than that. Cool pics!
