New Items this year in field?
devinv replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
classic zeiss 15x and nikon buckmasters scope. -
the first day i went out around 2 till dark, saw about 10 does and 2 small bucks, and the three bears, next morning i started glassing around 830, saw about 20 does, and one small fork that actually walked up to me to about 7 yards when i was glassing, i thought the footsteps were illegals haha. that evening it rained and cleared about 2, started glassing and saw the antelope, turkeys, 3 small bucks, one of them was a deep fork with a kicker, then several other small spikes and forks, then right before dark saw a decent 3x3. these deer were all on fort though, just thought i would look at what i wish i can hunt. went out a third day early in the AM but a storm was rolling through and the mountins got socked in with the clouds and couldnt see 5 feet in front of me. so all in all, i'dsay about 40 does, and a dozen small spikes or forks. throughout the day, i saw activity, especially with the clouds and the rain

spent some time scouting for my deer hunt in november the last few days. tried taking some pictures through the binoculars, some turned out better than others. saw a ton of does and a lot of little spikes and small forks. also saw three bears, the black one was with the light colored one, and the more brown one was alone. one of the days i went on fort just to look around, after it got done raining deer were everywhere, again, tons of does and small bucks, one was a decent 3x3 but to bad you cant hunt there. also saw some antelope running with a really nice buck and some goulds turkeys. didnt have my camera with me though. but here are the pics i did get.. <br/> <br/> <br/> <br/> <br/> <br/> <br/> <br/> <br/> <br/>

I had looked at your post but I believe you sold them right after I joined the site. Didn't get a chance too. Leaving today to go scout for the nov. Hunt. For a few days.

i got em! thoroughy please, stopped outside of rye on the way back to the valley just to sit and look around before the sun went down, regardless if it was tough keeping them steady because they are 15s, i managed to find a herd of pigs right before dark. love the glasses.

2nd choice, november hunt! 35a -
On one hand, 4point has been hunting this area so long, 13 years? What if he had started putting salt out this long, I don't think it entitles him year after year exclusive rights, if he has a tag. Yet, like he said, the area sounds easyisly accessible so come hunt time, there are probably several other hunters who will be in there. Doesn't seem like a honeyhole after all. I'd put in a little more scouting time and find somewhere more remote where you have less chance of stepping on somebody elses toes or any encounters.

Well, it seems swaros seem to be optically the best, but they're around 2k. The leica duovoid 10 + 15 seem to be a close second but they're even more. The newer zeiss don't seem up to par, and the older 15x classics are hard to come by. So it seems minox is the third best choice, and for a 750 price tag, it seems like a steal, if the glass is good quality.

update: got a chance to go out shooting today. first time shooting with the new mounted scope. set up at 25 yards, surprised i was on the paper without any kind of bore sighting. first few were low and left, another 12 or so shots and i was stacking them in the bulls eye. backed out to 275, has a decent crosswind, all 4 were to the right and 2 inches high. im assuming my zero is gunna be about 280 and centered without that crosswind. really happy with the new scope! and i'm shooting the 150 gr SP light mag hornadys. they are extremely accurate. thanks again for all the help. also, im not sure i can dish out the money for the swaro 15s, read up on the minox 15x58 and the current post about them in the optics section, besides the eye cup issue, what about the quality of glass?.. any comments about them?

Not yet, in california until friday, I'm going to give it a go sometime next week. I picked up a rifle bench rest from bass pro, nothing special but it should help me get the job done.

6.0 is a gas guzzler in general, maybe not as bad in a 1500 like the ss, but in a 2500 yeah. I had an '03 ext silverado with a aftermarket cam, exhaust, intake, corvette servos, 3k stall, etc. With 22 inch wheels and got 10 to 11 mpg. I now have an '03 ext cab sierra with 5.3 engine with 7 inch suspension and 3 inch body with 37s, exhaust, intake, 4.11 gears, and programmed. I get 14 in the city. Bigger engine pulls the weight of the truck better without stress. But as stated above, I think tires make a huge difference too. I was running nitto mud grapplers and got 11 in the city at best, not I have discoverer stt's and get 14.

awesome, thank you! im waiting for my doorbell to ring any minute with my package containing my new scope so i can mount it. then attempt to sight it in tomorrow. the nosler bullets seem to leave to large of an exit wound, id like to try and shoot the failsafe but i cant find a factory loaded round with this bullet. the barnes triple shock sound like a good round too, but again they are not any loaded ammunition with this bullet in a 150gr 30-06, they do make a 165 gr though with federal. but right now the best choice sounds like its gunna be the hornady light mag 150 gr. SP, fastest velocity, knockdown power, accuracy, and a BC of .338. i figured if i sight in at 25 yards, it will again be dead on at exactly 275. update: mounted my new scope, i was gunna have a gunsmith do it so everything was level but the place i called wanted 50 an hour, plus 5 to bore sight it. i opted to mount it myself, i wrapped some electric tape around the scope where it was gunna sit in the rings to fill any gap after mounting the top part of the ring, then turned the scope till the crosshairs looked level to my eye, i guess thats the best i can do until i get out there and start sighting it in. any other suggestions?

elk scouting for a buddy
devinv replied to azryan's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
sounds like a successful trip, i was up in 3C at my cabin this last weekend and went out hiking to see what was around, saw a huge herd of elk, about 40-50 head, 5 mule deer, and a few coyotes. waiting for my scope to come in so i can sight it in then go practice with it on some coyotes around the east valley area. -
Been reading through the forums for awhile now, finally signed up. Had a few questions to ask.. I read through pages of topics, so i'm hoping im not bringing up anything that has been discussed time and time again. First off, i was wondering what the state law was when it came to carrying a sidearm while hunting as far as age. I'm 19 and hunt down south, i come across illegals often and what seems like well traveled routes for them. I like the idea of being able to carry a sidearm for protection, but, i know state law says you have to be 21 to buy a handgun or handgun ammunition, is there a law against carrying one while hunting for protection? Secondly, i'm in the market for new binoculars, i noticed a lot of you are partial to swarovski. i've always used zeiss but recently my dad moved to texas, with all his gear. for now i'm only going to most likely purchase one pair, i used the zeiss classic 15 and 10 power binocs extensively for years, and really like them. problem is they're hard to come by. the zeiss 15s are way to bulky to use for anything other than tripod, but the 10s can be used for both, so comparing the zeiss classic 10s to the swarovski slc 15s, somebody have any experience with these two side by side? besides the obvious power difference, can the swarvoski 15s possibly still be used for around the neck as well as primarily tripod? Third, for those of you with trail cams that use them in the southern part of the state, do you leave your flash on at night? just curious, because of the traffic of the illegals if the cameras ever come up missing? sorry for the long post, thanks guys

finally gunna break down and buy the gear i need. anybody have any experience with the velbon sherpa 600 tripod with the 157q head? also, i was reading past posts about scopes and it seems a lot of people recommend the nikon buckmaster, best bang for the buck (found it for $280, 6-18x40) i played with it in basspro yesterday, it was very bright and i noticed you didnt have to get close to the scope at all to see the full range of view. again, anybody have any experiece first hand? was looking at the 6-18x40. and last but not least, gunna get those slc 15s. maybe somebody can PM about the prices over at camerland from doug, guess he gives lower prices than the msrp?
-
velbon sherpa 600 extends tall enough to stand up, 3 legs that can move independently, light weight, can get em for 120$ with the 157q head or 100 without
-
the reason i asked is people have stated they recieved lower than msrp prices from him when purchasing, prices he could not state on public forums.
-
can anybody who bought a pair of slc 15s from cameraland send me a PM please?

did some more searching, decided on a few loads to test out, i didnt want anything ballistic or to act like a ballistic, and i wanted a 150 gr, so that eliminated the hornady sst and interbond, as well as the nosler accubond, it left me with the winchester failsafe 150gr and the hornady 150 gr light mag soft point, i wanted to try the nosler partition as well, but i cannot find loaded ammunition, just the bullets to reload with, anybody know if they make a loaded round with this bullet? i saw that federal used this bullet but it was 165 and 180 grain? also, i cannot seem to find the winchester failsafe in a loaded round as well, is this the same problem?
-
down the barrel, i live in chandler, so not to far no.
-
thanks a lot RR for helping out, ill try a few different loads and see what comes up shooting best out of my rifle, if anybody else has any experience with the hornadys, they have a few different loads in 150 gr, didnt quite get the difference between the sst, the light magnum, and the soft point, then they have the sst light magnum..
