    Cool Pic!!

wow! those cameras shoot at an iso of probably 90, considering the blur from the motion, and those arrows travel pretty darn fast, incredible.

    Camo?

I also am looking at getting some new gear, I predominantly hunt whitetail in the mixed juniper elevation and javelina in the desert grasslands. I thought the Realtree AP HD pattern suited this terrain. Any opinions? Might use it if I ever get drawn for elk and possibly turkey in the spring as well. <br/>

    Ducks Anyone?

i'd like to, but have never tried it.
  6. Went out to the Rio Salado Range this afternoon to shoot the 30-06 and practice, picked up 3 different manufacturer ammo and tested them. All of them were 150 grain bullets, I shot the Remington Express Core Lokt, Winchester Super X Power Point, and the Federal Power Shok. Set up a the first target at 25 yards. Note: I'm not claiming to be the most accurate shooter, but I am fairly consistent. Here are the results for each with pictures of the groups. 25 yards. Federal: Remington: Winchester: Next was the target at 100 yards. Federal: Remington: Winchester: And finally, the 200 yard pattern. (not allowed to place targets at 300) Federal: Remington: Winchester: There ya go. I wish I would have had a box of the Hornady Light Mags on hand that I have been using but I didn't. On the other hand, for those of you that remember a couple months ago when I had trouble sighting in the Remington Core Lokts wouldn't pattern for sh!t, and not that's not the case. Now comes the questions.. My scope was sighted in at 25 yards, with the idea then at 100 yards the bullets should place about 3 inches high at 100. Well the pictures don't show it, but they actually shot 4.5 to 5 inches high at 100. Then, at 200, they were all shooting 8 inches high. Before the obvious assumptions come to mind, between shooting the groups of 4, I waited about 10 minutes for the barrel to cool down, plus, it was only about 85 out there today, and, the patio is shaded. On top of that, when initially shooting, the barrel was cleaned and not fouled, and half way through the shooting i recleaned the barrel thoroughly to keep results consistent. So why are the 100 shots so high? Much less the 200 yard shots doubling? My idea is that maybe because the barrel is heating up it is causing the composite stock to heat, and therefore expand. And when it is expanding it is rising the barrel.. Yes? No? Is the best way to solve this to float the barrel? Bed the stock? I tried running a dollar bill between the stock and the barrel and it only went about half an inch, so there is contact between the two..

    Short Ammunition Test

It seems there is constant pressure throughout the length of the barrel, should I sand the stock the whole length?

    Short Ammunition Test

shot again today, just federals, they were good at 25, terrible after that, couldnt group inside an inch and a half at 100 with several flyers, and 200 was a joke. i'm going to go back to hornadys, they are far more consistent, shot for shot. i guess you pay for what you get.

    Short Ammunition Test

I waited about that amount of time before groups, but I didn't clean that often, I cleaned after the first 20 or so rounds. I might try the hornadys again because I don't think I had any flyers when shooting them as compared to these other 3 rounds. I'm gunna head to the range in a bit to try again.

    Short Ammunition Test

If we consider the results from the federal bullet, dead center at 25. How did you get the calculations for the 100 and 200 yard mark? The BC calculator on biggameinfo.com, after entering the approximate adjustments shows at a 25 yard zero it would be about 2.7" high at 100 and 1.7" high at 200. How did you get 3" and 5"? Also, I can't explain why the bullets are shooting 4.5" high at 100 and 8" high at 200, when the zero was dead on at 25 for the federal, the barrel wan't fouled, nor was it hot. Could it be that the stock expand from the heat and causing it to angle the barrel slightly higher, and thats why my bullets were rising from 100 to 200 yards? I thought they should begin to drop between 100 200?

    Hornady SST .280

1/2 the price? im paying $30 a box

    Hornady SST .280

if i recall right, i called hornady and talked to a tech there and he said the sst is designed to do the most destruction on impact, the interbond stays together a little more for deeper penetration, and the interlock does the least amount of shock and damage while retaining weight, which is better for light skinned game, which i am using for coues in nov.
  14. filled the bag limit opening day and today, wear im hunting the birds arent flying till 8 or so till about 11. early in the AM they are flying FROM the water, and roosting areas to their feeding areas, and on the way back we're catching em in flight.
  15. i know some friends and i will be heading out tonight and camp out ready for tomorrow morning, looks like hunts in the southern half of the state are gunna be done about 8 or 9 because its gunna be hot! good luck, hope nobody gets peppered to bad (seems inevitable). take pics!
  16. limited out too, as well as got peppered.
  17. congrats! seems like a pain in the @ss to have had to find people to cock the crossbow for you but i think its great you didn't let that stop you from hunting.
  18. access is typically not a problem, check the azgfd website for this unit for the typical starting points, they do give good information actually. the north side of the huachucas is mostly private, and full of tree huggers. the east side has some access points into canyons, while other canyons are private and residential areas. the south side of the huachucas has the coronado monument and there is no hunting in this area. the west side of the huachucas out towards parker canyon holds plenty of deer, although it does get pressure. you mentioned you dont mind hiking in, which is what you are going to need to do to get away from the weekend warriors with the quads and rv campers. there are several draws and canyons from parker canyon all the way to the tip of the east side of the huachucas that hold deer. dont overlook areas that dont look promising, you'd be surprised. also, you're gunna need quality, powerful glass for this area as it offers a lot of vantage points to sit and look. if you're not looking for a trophy, there are plenty of spikes and forks that can be found. i'll be down there in november.

    Mullies in 39

i drew a 39 tag this year and have never hunted that unit could you be more specific were your farm is. i didnt realize how popular e lurking is. even though sunsetfarms offered.. posted this topic this morning, new registered user at 825, posted at 835 wanting info. to many people want info behind the scenes by scanning posts and a far lot less people offering the information to help out. anyway, hope you get somebody to tag one of the bucks, is there still good coyote hunting down that area near the farm? been trying to get out and wack some
  20. Activity is just as high in 35A, Fort Huachuca or not, they still travel every canyon and wash
  21. was in 27 a couple years ago on a cow elk hunt, we came in the day before the hunt and set up camp, down the road a ways and through some thick woods there was a large open meadow, well we got to watch and hear about 8 different bulls bugle all night, well almost all night, until somebody who was deer hunting pulled into the meadow about 2 am and set up camp, un-fricken-believable. the next morning granted the elk that were there the night before had left the area and didnt return the whole hunt.

    Need a Coues Cape

I don't save my capes, I will only do a shoulder mount if I connect with a nice buck this fall. If I do, I will have a cape for either of you if you need one by then
  23. i always call BP when i see illegals and tell them where they are, most of the time during the day they aren't on the move when i see them so it's easy for me to give BP directions and then go off and hunt. i called some in about 3 years ago and i stuck around to watch BP apprehend them through my bincos, i was on my cell with the dispatch and the dispatch was talking to them through radio. they did find them and i guess one of the women in the group had a broken leg, i might have saved her life because she couldnt walk, but i bet BP wasn't to thrilled about it because they had to practically carry her out a mile and a half or so through rough terrain.
  24. what shortpants said, i just didnt wanna be the first to say something. being way over emotional. you know the buck is there, go hunt it, you dont need pictures. you're acting like that area is so sentimental. go hunt!
  25. saturday morning started off in 3B trying to possibly find a bear, didn't know the area at all, no luck. headed back to the truck and ended up in another area and decided to going glass and call for coyotes, no luck. saw a ton of antelope, about 45 in a few minutes. have a couple of pictures, the first one was by himself, then saw a group of the 3 small bucks. then saw 2 seperate heards of 15 to 20, both of which were running with nice bucks. but they were a couple miles off and couldnt get pictures of them. tried a new camera this time while taking pictures through the binocs, didnt work so well. also saw some antelope in different areas that arent typically 'lope units. still no coyotes all weekend, bummer. <br/> <br/> <br/> <br/> and does anybody know what the heck this thing is? i saw a ton of them in a natural water pond..<br/> <br/> saturday evening went out to look for elk by the cabin, was about 2 miles back in from the highway, going up a semi steep slope with loose rocks, truck started sliding backwards, and ended up smashing into a fallen tree. dang 2wd tires were spinning couldnt get out, and it just had gotten dark. talk about frustrating. made the hike back the freeway to flag somebody down with the flashlight, luckily a father and son headed to eager to bowhunt stopped and pulled me out. im not sure if they frequent this site, but if they do, wanted to say thanks again! only damage from the tree was a dinged up tailgate. the tree was fine. haha
